Editorial Review
Amazon.co.uk Review
A provocative science fiction drama, District 9 boasts an original story that gets a little lost in blow-'em-up mayhem. Set in Johannesburg, South Africa, District 9 begins as a mock documentary about the imminent eviction of extraterrestrials from a pathetic shantytown (called District 9). The creatures, it turns out, have been on Earth for years, having arrived sickly and starving. Initially received by humans with compassion and care, the aliens are now mired in blighted conditions typical of long-term refugee camps unwanted by a hostile, host society. With the creatures' care contracted out to a for-profit corporation, the shantytown has become a violent slum. The aliens sift through massive piles of junk while their minders secretly research weapons technology that arrived on the visitors' spacecraft. Against this backdrop is a more personal story about a bureaucrat named Wikus (Sharlto Copley) who is accidentally exposed to a DNA-altering substance. As he begins metamorphosing into one of the creatures, Wikus goes on the run from scientists who want to harvest his evolving, new parts and aliens who see him as a threat. When he pairs up with an extraterrestrial secretly planning an escape from Earth, however, what should be a fascinating relationship story becomes a series of firefights and explosions. Nuance is lost to numbing violence, and the more interesting potential of the film is obscured. Yet, for a while District 9 is a powerful movie with a unique tale to tell. Seamless special effects alone are worth seeing: the (often brutal) exchanges between alien and human are breathtaking. --Tom Keogh

I was a bit skeptical at first - but found this to be a really good film.
I've watched it a few times now, and still think its excellent.

It felt fresh and a bit different for an Alien/Sci-Fi/Action film.
It wasn't a film based in America for once.
And - I didn't really know any of the main actors, which was refreshing.

Copley put on a excellent performance, a character that you could connect with throughout the film. I hope to see him in something again! I would really reccomend this film to anyone who hasnt seen it.

On a side note: The term "Prawn" isn't used because they look like prawns. (I mean - think about it, they look nothing like prawns!)

It's in reference to a Parktown Prawn which is a species of cricket found in South Africa. The South Africans consider the Parktown Prawn Crickets a plague and a nuisance.

So this is likely what the reference of "prawns" to the aliens is based on.

wow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a surprise this was, i had heard the hype about this film and it is all true, this is one of the most original films i think i have seen in a very long time, ok the acting at times can be a bit suspect and the accents sometimes slip from an iffy south african to a really dodgy scots accent but that can be forgiven i will go as far as to say this is as good as avatar or better, the aliens are superb and seem to be very real and there are loads of messy bits to keep everybody happy , all in all a stonker of a film 10 stars plus well worth buying

One of the best films ive seen for years. Dont think ive watched a film as intently as i did with this, literally kept me glued to the screen. Very shocking in some places. Shows human nature in its true form, greed, selfish need for power, among other things which really open our eyes and sum us up. If you have an open mind and your into si-fi things and politics, this is well worth a watch. Ignore the negative reviews, people are closed minded and obviously don't understand this film.

Dissapointed with this film.

The trailers made it look like a serious epic. High drama, no expense speared film.

However, i did not know weather or not to take this film seriously. Thought the graphics were poor. The story line was poor.

I got the impression there was a hidden message in the story line. The film is basically about how humans are so racist, destructive & generally none tollerent of other people. Especially thought the setting of South Africa was a little bit too far given the history there.

Didn't enjoy it at all. Seemed like its purpose was to send a msg to the world rather then to create a good, enjoyable film.

Poor. Not worth watching.

District 9 is the worst kind of film. It has an original and innovative underlying concept that has the potential to create a "must have" film. Unfortunately this gives the viewer a glimmer of hope that this atrocious film will improve. It keeps you with your finger lightly resting on the stop button as you endure every stupid and ill thought out plot twist. I kept asking myself, is this meant to be a comedy? Sadly, the answer is no. There are a few moments of action and interest that keep that glimmer of hope alive until you reach the end. Unfortunately this just gives way to a disappointing and illogical ending. Sad.

This film robbed me of 112 minutes of my life. Please don't let it do the same to you.
