Best Contest Ever!, 2009-01-10 Eurovision Song Contest 2008, which I think has been the best since the first one I watched which was the 2002 contest.
Here's an Australian review of the 2008 contest:
Semi Final 1:
Montenegro - an ok rock song.
Israel - great song, by a great singer.
Estonia - no way, how'd this become Estonia's Eurovision song? Someone tell me?
Moldova - smooth classic song.
San Marino - good try for first timers.
Belgium - great tune.
Azerbaijan - what the...? A little weird, but some people may like it.
Slovenia - great song.
Norway - nice song, another nice relaxing song.
Poland - singer had nice voice.
Ireland - a turkey?, and this was a favourite to win! (wasn't it?)
Andorra - great song, deserved better than its result.
Bosnia & Herzegovina - catchy song, didn't understand what they were saying!
Armenia - great song, great performance, 5 star song.
The Netherlands - a good song.
Finland - Trying to repeat Finland in 2006? For hard rock fans.
Romania - Was this a love song? Was a nice song.
Russia - Song was ok.
Greece - great catchy song. 5 Stars!
Semi Final 2:
Iceland - loved it. Great song. 5 Stars!
Sweden - great song. Rating of 5/5.
Turkey - boring rock song.
Ukraine - Great song. 5 star song!
Lithuania - Great voice.
Albania - good song.
Switzerland - Great song.
Czech Republic - good song. Could have been performed better.
Belarus - couldn't match Belarus 2007 entry.
Latvia - catchy song.
Croatia - too boring for my taste.
Bulgaria - took to long to start. Its a song contest not a dance contest.
Denmark - good catch song.
Georgia - nice song.
Hungary - was ok.
Malta - now this was a great song. Catchy song and tune.
Cyprus - Their worst song since 2002 in my opinion.
FYR Macedonia - catchy song.
Portugal - too slow.
Automatics:
UK - catchy song, not their best entry though.
Germany - deserved a better placing. Good song.
France - a bit weird.
Spain - ...and the country got to choose? was their anything better?
Serbia - the best out of the automatically qualified countries. What were they saying though?
Overall, the contest had it highs and lows, and can't wait to see whats in store for Europe and the world in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest.
The annual musical lucky dip...as entertaining as ever, 2009-02-17 The artists and songs of the 2008 Eurovison Song Contest were totally overshadowed by the voting. Growing dissatisfaction at biases in its voting system had seen the resurgent Eurovision sailing into dangerous waters for some years. In Belgrade it truly hit the rocks. The show's centre of gravity had been shifting relentlessly eastwards since 1993 when Yugoslavia split into its separate entities. As the years rolled on more and more ex-communist states joined the party. By 2008 Eastern countries had started to outnumber the 'old Eurovision Europe' of the West. The debut of Azerbaijan, stretching the concept of 'European' to breaking point for many, completed this eastwards expansion and meant all non-Asian ex-Soviet Union states were now present and correct.
The introduction of televoting ca. 1997 set the scene for when the scales would really tip in favour of the newcomers; the mass movement over the next decade of millions of Eastern European migrant workers into Western Europe sealed it. Once there they dutifully televoted en masse for their homelands, totally skewing the competition's voting climax. So widespread and predictable had this become that by the time of the Belgrade show it was possible to accurately predict much of the scoreboard before a single note had been sung. Austria stayed away in protest (again) despite the show's organisers grudgingly tinkering with the voting system in the two semi finals. But they left the main show unreconstructed... with disastrous results. As was widely predicted Russia, with the help of Russian immigrants resident in countries once part of the old USSR, won with a weak song, one that flopped badly outside of Mother Russia.
Russia sent its biggest star in Dima Bilan but his appeal was noticably weaker in the West (and word leaked out that he had also scored far less well with the back up juries who chose Ukraine as their winner). Despite widespread derision across Western Europe at the unfairness in the voting Eurovision bosses were (temporarily at least) adamant that no overhaul of the system was needed. But Bilan's win turned out to be the final nail in the coffin of televoting and within months a new system was announced; the next contest in 2009 would be decided by a mix of televoting and juries of music professionals.
It remains to be seen whether this change will cut the number of novelty/joke entries sent by countries desperate to make a protest/grab attention/get some points. Ireland's turkey puppet, Estonia's TV comics, Latvia's singing pirates and Spain's reggaeton Elvis look-alike may have made 2008 entertaining but lowered the overall quality of the show's line up. Otherwise Belgrade saw the traditional pick'n'mix of genres, including Scandinavian schlager pop, Bulgarian techno, Turkish alt rock, Greek taverna cabaret from Cyprus and the almost traditional heavy metal from Finland. However, first prize for irony must go to Georgia and the blind Russian woman singing its entry, a song called "Peace Will Come"; within three months Russia and Georgia were at war.
Usual Backslapping vocal crap., 2008-07-01 Yes, how the rest of Europe like to think they can write a good song and win, alas it does not come down to the music, that concept died a death years ago. What we have now is in house back handers in the shape of vote rigging and crap songs that you would die if you found it in your cd collection.
Best songs for a while, 2008-05-26 Great contest this year. Loads of great tunes. Ukraine should have won, was a slow starter in the voting. Love shady lady. Russia was ok ish but not a winner to me. UK song is always rubbish,no wonder we got no votes. Great song by sweden got nowhere either, very strange. Eastern block countries voted for each other, scandanavia did too, ireland voted for the uk! Probably the best song content for a long time.
some great some good and one real turkey, 2008-05-27 a 2cd collection of all the songs from the 2008 eurovision song contest. 43 entries in total. a chanceto hear all the songs again. and these are worth listening to if you're a serious fan of the contest because on occasion a song can lose something in the performance and it comes over better on cd.
dics one contains:
andorra: a great song that alas didnt get to the final
albania: a decent song and a good singer
armenia: feisty up tempo stuff and very catchy
