I Love It, 2008-09-11
I have been going mad over the last 3 weeks trying to decide which entry level DSLR to go for. I finally settled for the Nikon D60.
As soon as it arrived I was able to shoot some good pictures without reading the "How to take a Picture" chapter in the user manual. Having now read the manual and watched the Nikon D60 Tutorial on the Nikon UK website I am now confident about the camera and how it works. I just need to get my eye in.
The menu's are concise and easy to understand and the instructions are straightforward. Its nice to hold and much lighter than I expected which makes it less of a drag to take it out.
The image quality is great. Vibrant colours, crisp, clear and detailed pictures make it a pleasure to use. The high ISO availabilty is brilliant and not grainy as I thought it would be.
In summary, I read many, many reviews on this camera and I have to say it still exceded my expectations. Chuffed to NAAFI breaks with it.
Don't faff about like I did trying to decide which camera to go for, just go to Amazon and buy this, it will save you a lot of time because this really is the camera you are looking for!
Great Entry Level DSLR, Great Choice of Lenses, 2008-09-07
I bought this as a first step into the SLR/DSLR world and my only regret is that I hadn't bought into it sooner. This camera has all the adjustability I need at this stage and feels well made and very solidly built.
I chose the D60 mainly because the reviews of the kit lenses that are available with the Canon 450D are not very good. I can't afford to spend massive amounts of cash on new lenses straight away and so the Nikon seemed the best bet. The 18-55mm lens seems very good in most situations and the VR is truly useful when shooting in low light.
I used a borrowed Nikon D40 for a safari holiday earlier in the year, so I was already fairly familiar with the (very similar) controls of the D60, but it is only when I have now started using Manual and RAW mode that I have really come to appreciate the amazing potential of this camera. Unfortunately I now find myself wanting f2.8 zoom lenses that will cost a small fortune - I need to start saving my pennies!
As a basic starter kit though, the D60 plus the 18-55 and 55-200 kit lenses, and maybe the affordable 50mm f1.8 prime lense, will allow me to start using the camera to take some amazing photos. I would say the small amount of extra money for this camera over the D40 was worth spending for me, as I do intend to get some photos blown up to a quite large size. The extra size of the images is not much of an issue as memory cards are not really that expensive any more. The D60 does feel a bit quicker than the D40 too.
I agree with a previous reviewer in that I would have liked to see some more focus points, but I don't miss the live view function of the 450D as I won't be working in a studio with the D60.
As is pointed out by several photographers on the internet, it is probably better to spend your money on lenses than the camera body, as these are probably going to have to last you longer and have a much greater effect on the image quality. For me, having seen the excellent photos the D60 can take, I'm inclined to agree with them.
Great entry level DSLR, 2008-09-15
Recently bought this digital SLR (with the VR lens kit) and I'm very impressed so far. This is my first dSLR purchase but I don't think I was prepared for just how great the jump in quality would be from a compact.
Out of the box it's pretty much ready to go, and I was taking pictures about five minutes after the battery was done charging. The camera does come with the obligatory 300page manual for when you get round to needing to know about f-stop and aperture timings and all that but the quickstart guide is enough to get you up and running.
So far I've been shooting inside and outside and the picture quality thus far has been, to my untrained eye, exemplary. Although the auto-flash seems a little oversensitive it's just a flick of a lever to turn it off.
The camera comes with it's own picture exporting and viewing programmes although the installation to my PC seemed a little buggy so I'm taking them off manually with Windows Explorer and it's fine.
The only two things to bear in mind before you buy is that, firstly, unlike compacts (or even your phone) at this price range you shouldn't expect to be able to arange a shot via the screen, so you'll be using the viewfinder. Secondly, the Nikon D60, like it's predecessor does not have an internal auto-focus motor, so you're dependent upon the lens having one - this is a standard feature on pretty much EVERY compatable lens that the entry-level amateur will be looking at (if indeed you upgrade at all)but bear in mind that if you're looking to dig out an old Nikon or Sigma from your standard SLR you might be on manual focus.
All round a great camera - really happy with it and would definitely buy again knowing what I know now.
Perfect for the transition from compact camera to digital SLR, 2008-10-19
Have had the D60+VR lens for a couple of days now and am thoroughly impressed. I did a lot of research online before buying and finally went for a Nikon after using a friend's D300 at a wedding. The controls are intuitive, the image quality and vibration reduction features excellent. The display at the back really helps the newcomer to dSLRs understand the implications and relationships between shutter speed and aperture, white balance etc and there is a handy help function which gives basic explanations, making dSLR photography highly intuitive and the learning curve very steep but easy. I bought the camera with a Transcend 16gb class 6 card from Amazon and the write speed is more than adequate. Highly recommended.

what a great piece of kit.
im 18 and ive been taking pictures for as long as i can remember (my mum and dad are both photographers), i have a nikon d3 and a d2x, but i needed something that was cheaper, that i could take to locations where the camera might encounter the odd knock! i had the nikon d40 when that first came out and thought it was a little cracker, but no longer needed it, so ebay it was for that.
but i can safely say ill be using it alot more then i thought, the VR kit lens is great (although im using the 55-200 onit atm) but for £340 (what i paid) this camera AMAZING, ive used camera more ten times that and recieved results far less satisfying,
the camera is light, and VERY well made, it feels like your harding...urm a brick?, its so sterdy and "together"
liveview?, well if you want liveview, you shouldnt be buying a DSLR, i heard in reviews that the autofocus was slow, its slower then my other cameras yeah!, but its no where near slow.
well more £340, id gladly pay alot more for it.
trust me, beginer-intermetate camera users, or pros looking for a light small simple DSLR for tough locations, BUY THIS!
