You are never going to hear such an exciting interpretation as this. All the top critics agree that this is a knock-out performance. Remember the original title of the orchestral work is Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings, and that Shostakovich did indeed spend time writing and playing music for movies.

Maybe you'll want to back up the Quintet with the Borodin, but this is the only 1st concerto you need.

Musician friends and admirers get together for a bit of a love-in. Rapturous applause, especially for what is indeed a magnetic, searching performance of DS's Piano Quintet. The lesser known Concertino for two pianos is well worth a listen. The Piano Concerto, or as it is here, the Concerto for Piano and Trumpet, is given a hopelessly disjointed and self-indulgent performance that seems to be nothing more than a cartoonish duel between the two. Look elsewhere for that piece, buy here for the chamber music.
