Comment: I bought this in Berlin (in the Berlin Phiharmonie) as a momento of a visit there - but it was following a hearing of 'Four Last Songs' on Radio 3 that I was encouraged to buy it. Ironically it is the 'Alpine Symphony' which I would recommend most of all. This version encourages you to listen to it as it sounds - not necessarily where your imagination takes you. I have always been put off the 'Alpine' because the imagery has been too obvious! In this recording I found myself appreciating the score and the picture post cards came second - so much the better for that as well - in my view. The sound is exceptional and I would imagine, if you are SACD enabled, it will sound absolutely marvellous. I will probably buy the set if the other recordings of Strauss's tone poems, by this conductor and orchestra, are of such quality.
