If you order this toy then buy glue at the same time, 2008-09-26 I bought this toy for my 2 year old son last Christmas and have since thrown it out. It was a great toy but I was so sick of finding pieces of it all around the house and it was never played with because pieces of the track were missing and we could never find all of the parts and any one time. My son is like any other child of that age group - eager to see how things come apart and when it is so easily done as it was with this toy then it was inevitable that pieces would get lost. If you do buy this toy then order some glue to go with it so you don't end up wasting your money like me. Pretty good toy just not very well made.
Nice but not perfect!, 2008-08-16 This was bought for my little boy when he was 1.5 years old. It's a nice neat toy that doesn't take up too much room and an instant hit with any Thomas fan. However the trains never seem to make it all the way to the bottom without several nudges. I've tried putting the track together at slightly different angles, but it doesn't seem to help. Also the boulder is a bit of a pain as it can't be put down from the very top, only from where it sits on the toy. Kids don't get this and try and force it under the bridge. On the whole quite a good toy but would be much better if the trains made it all the way to the bottom on their own.
Brilliant for little ones, 2009-01-03 We bought this for our son's first Christmas just before he was 1. It is the first toy he has really played with properly, it only took him a matter of minutes to get the idea of pushing the trains down and now he tries to shove any number of items down it...sometimes with some success! Sometimes the track does come apart and yes I am forever looking for the trains all over the floor but he loves it so much it is worth it. Maybe it's becuase he isn't at the dismantling stage yet that we haven't had the problems mentioned by other reviewers, but he does knock it over alot and it doesn't seem to come apart that easily. I've never bothered to write a review before but I am so pleased with this I thought I would.
Great concept and our daughter loves it, but disappointing re: quality / design., 2008-03-30 We bought this for our 2.5 year old daughter because she is mad about Thomas. We found it great on many levels: it comes with Thomas, Percy, James, Spencer and Diesel; the idea of sending the engines whizzing down the winding mountain was great fun for all the family; it is compact, so doesn't take over the sitting room floor and fits easily in the car for transportation to Granny & Grandad's house, making visits a lot less boring! She loves it and it keeps her occupied for hours, both as a playset and by finding new and exciting adventures for the engines away from the mountain. What we found singularly unimpressive is the quality of the set. Given that it is marketed as suitable for 12+ months, it is flimsy. The tracks pop apart of their own volition because the pieces are just fractionally too short to fit together without straining them. This was easily remedied by the application of a bit of superglue, but for the price, should this really be necessary? Diesel & Spencer are also too light to make it down the mountain without regular nudging. The steamies fair better being slightly heavier, and we found that a bit of beeswax on the track (AFTER supergluing the junctions) worked wonders for everyone's speed. The boulder, we found next to useless because the wall on the first turn after you release it is too low, so it perpetually shoots off the side rather than following the trains down. This hasn't proved an issue for our little one as it's all about the engines for her, but still irritates us as it is a simple design flaw that could be easily remedied. All in all, it is a great toy and you do get a lot of Thomas and friends for the money, but after paying £25 - £44 (depending on where you buy it) it would be very nice not to have to painstakingly apply stickers to the various inaccessible bits of the mountain (all of the facades come in sticker form to be applied to the moulded plastic shapes), nor to have to permanently secure the track together and to have a boulder that is more than mere decoration. For the sake of a few extra pence worth of plastic, Tomy could have gotten this absoutely perfect.
Firm favourite, 2008-03-04 I got this for my little boy's first birthday and he's played with it every day since then (nearly five months). As he gets older he works out how to operate different bits himself - he's just learned how to push the lever to make the Boulder roll down, but he hasn't really explored the bridge or the turntable yet so there is still more to discover. It's all really durable and still looks as good as new too. Very impressive!
