Who needs sturm und drang?, 2007-12-09 Who needs a tortured genius? Who need blood and thunder? Paul Lewis continues his remarkable odyssey through the piano sonatas of Beethoven, and treats them on this disc with a welcome delicacy, tact and, yes, beauty. Don't listen to anyone who nay-says this performance. Top drawer. Buy it immediately, along with Volumes 1 and 2 and wait with baited breath for Volume 4 in Spring 2008.
Is this really Beethoven?, 2007-11-12 Lewis plays these Beethoven sonatas with amazing delicacy and sophisticated style, but it sounds as if he is more concerned with cosmetic of the music and sounds even artifecial at times. Like over-painted English landscape painting, it may be beautiful and immaculate yet somehow lacks truthfulness and depth that are so essential to Beethoven's music. I would prefer tough and weightier performances than these beautified ones.
