iStuff AutoScan FM Transmitter for iPods and MP3 Players and Mobile Phones
My husband and I recently went to France on holiday and my gadget-loving husband decided he wanted to make use of his ipod for music, rather than carting hundreds of cds to our gite!

So, my task, and I was going to be made to accept it - was to find an fm transmitter that could play his ipod music through the car stereo AND the radio/stereo in France! Lucky me!

Looked at a number of other options, when I came across some pretty positive reviews for the istuff autoscan. After a good few hours of further research, and the fact I found it on special offer, I bought this one.

First impressions were OK, cables are plenty long enough, instructions on how to use are scant to say the least, but anyone with a couple of brain cells, or a wife who, when losing the will to live watching husband try, says "give it here!", will have no trouble working it out!

Once worked out, connected it up to the stereo in my kitchen and hey presto, Michael Buble appeared on cue. Pretty good! So far, so good.

One of the worst things about this set-up for me, was the many, many, many hours of my husband asking which cds I would like put onto his ipod and then taking forever putting them on, I think I could be marooned for about 2 and a half months before a song repeats!!

The road trip....
We packed and set off for France with our, sorry - his ipod, and the new fm transmitter ready to go and tuned into an empty station as provided by the istuff and sure enough our music played just fine through the car speakers. Yes, occasionally you do get a bit of hiss, depending on how strong the signal is and if you go past any truckers with cb radios, but on the whole it was rather nice having your own music to listen to without having to change cds all the time.

In France....
I don't know if there are more radio stations in France, but we did find that there were less blank stations for us to tune in to than in England, but once you found one it was fine, just as at home. The only thing that we found was that if the hissing got too bad, you probably need to rescan and choose a different channel which could be annoying but it wasn't exactly hard to do and we didn't have to do that often, so we didn't really mind.

Top tips....
Make sure you plug it in to the cigarette lighter as this really helps boost the signal otherwise it is too weak and will eat through batteries like no-one's business. If you do get a bit of hiss, before you rescan see if manually going up or down from the channel sorts it out. I found that if I was told to tune to 104.3 and it started to get a little hissy then changing to 104.25 or 104.35 frequently sorted it out.

Oh, and it worked beautifully with the French radio too!

Overall, I definitely recommend this product as long as you know it doesn't autoscan for you when you lose signal and you don't want pure b&w clarity 100% of the time!

I searched for ages, reading about what the best transmitter would be and a BIG thank you to all those people who took the time to review their purchases. I settled on this transmitter and by jove is it a good'un. I've even got over the hum/whistle issue.. It happens infrequently but I just take the charger thing out the lighter hole for a second, stick it back in and like magic, the hum is gone. Fantastic buy, well recommended.

I was initially pleased with the icast transmitter, using it at home to play MP3s on the PC through a separates system, without the need for wires trailing across the floor.

The high-pitched whistle which comes and goes with the peaks in volume becomes tiring and irritating. I would imagine it is less noticeable through a car stereo, where the background noise is greater.

Assuming it's not a problem confined to my unit, this apparent design flaw makes it difficult to recommend.

This worked well for the first 6 months of its life and then gave up the ghost. Perhaps a few of the rave reviewers of this product will find a similar story. Returned the item to the manufacturer/distributor but no reply.

I've had no problems using the iStuff transmitter; it works very easily with minimal hassle and setup and creates a much needed wire-free zone in your car. Good stuff.
