Not fit for purpose, 2008-10-29 Very disappointing, other than its a good blower. I have used the Ryobi RBV2400VP on four occasions to deal with dead leaves on patio and its performance gets worse each time with longer and longer delays because:
The Shaft blocks when sucking leaves -this means dismantling shaft -time consuming and dirty but fairly easy.
Motor keeps cutting out, often after reassembling the shaft, one then has to wait for it to come back on. It has a mind of its own!
Lever that switches from blow to suck keeps sticking, when it does not even brute force will move it - this mean more dismantling, very difficult to clear and very time consuming.
In 'suck' mode the bag sprays fine dirt on one's trousers and if the leaves are wet, bad luck you will quickly have a big wet patch on your trousers!
Excellent Product, 2 minor flaws, 2008-02-24 Our initiation with this tool came late into autumn. We hadn't been around when the leaves first fell and thus by the time we got to them they were plentyful and wet.
The Ryobi had little problem sucking them up. It's powerful (albeit noisy) and comes with enough attachments to deal wonderfully with the sizeable chunk of dead foliage in our garden.
Two minor complaints - the shoulder strap is a bit flimsy. It does the job, but when full of leaves it can be quite heavy. A better grade strap would be nice as well a clearer indication of where and how it's supposed to attach to the actual vac.
Second the bag that collects the mulched leaves is a little light-weight. To be fair, we had little choice but to use it with wet leaves, which will have added to the weight inside the bag.
Even so, the material the bag is made of does not feel particularly heavy duty. Which is a shame because it lets down the otherwise excellent product.
UPDATE: a year later and after using this product every time (about 6 - 8 occassions now) we needed to clean up the leaves in our garden (~20m x 10m), we've come to the conclusion than it is easier for us to rake the leaves and put them into a bucket by hand.
The Ryobi certainly does it's job very well, however the problems (compared to raking) are that:
- before you can start, you have to sort out the electric cable. Even with an extension cord, the cable is going to snag on various corners around your garden and while this is hardly a big or hard problem, it's a niggling annoyance.
- On a leafy day, we need to empty the bag perhaps three or four times. Doing this is a big pain in the rear, especially as you need to pay good attention not to putting too much undue pressure on the bag, and the electric cable seems determined to tangle up around you or the machine.
- It's LOUD! And it's not particularly light weight.
If a leaf vac/blower is what you want, it still seems like a great product with a few bugs. On the whole I would recommend it.
For us however, a 10 quid rake and a (very) large bucket/bag to put the leaves into by hand is quicker, easier and less effort than using the Ryobi. A shame really.
Pap, 2008-03-26 Bought one of these and it worked for one day before the motor blew up. Okay I have a large garden but it really did struggle at the slightest pile of leaves and before the day was out I had the burnt smell of death followed by one non functional leaf vac. Got a refund as it was less than two days old and went back to my old compost heap. If you have a small yard with a few little bits to pick up then this would probably do. However if you have a bit of work then forget it.
Ryobi RBV 2400 Blower Vac, 2008-11-24 A pretty awful product. Firstly it is very heavy and uncomfortable to use. Clearing out debris from the thing is a difficult process and therefore time consuming. I purchased this product six months ago and have used it three times. However on the fourth occasion it would not start. Ryobi has since collected it and after three weeks I needed to chase them and have been told that they wiil send a replacement. Currently out of stock!
