FM transmission of instructions no longer available., 2008-11-20 I chose the 520 model because of its ability to send instructions via FM to the car radio. Following a software upgrade last week, this facility no longer works, even though it can still send music via FM. I've contacted TomTom who say-
"Devices with FM transmitter functionality is (sic) now unfortunately music only. With the launch of the Go x40 series and the release of Navcore 8.300 route instructions can no longer be transmitted, leaving the FM transmitter only suitable for music. The reason is a law which describes that an FM transmitter is not allowed to occupy an FM frequency if nothing is being transmitted. Thus, in between route instructions the frequency has to be released completely. This would result in the white noise you hear when not having tuned into a radio station and this feature was therefore taken out completely."
Beware of additional charges!!!!!, 2008-11-04 I bought my TomTom 520 in August following some research on the internet. I liked the concept of the MapShare idea. TomTom are now trying to charge me 60.00 to update my maps, only three months later. Perspective customers need to be aware of this!!!!!
Battery life is poor to put it mildly. Apart from this the device performs well although I find the operation of the device somewhat illogical. Some items are burried deep in menu's and are difficult to find.
Would I buy another one? No! These additional charges are too high and a come too soon following purchase.
Review, 2008-11-12 This Tom Tom is very badly designed. Even though it still has the same easy to use interface (which is still great) it has many other faults:
1) The mop thing that sticks to the windscreen is not good at sticking to anything so the unit keeps falling off.
2) The combined power/data connector is at the bottom of the Tom Tom and that has meant that the connector has come loose after falling onto the dash so many times. Now the power connector is damaged and I am constantly trying to re-adjust the cable to get it to charge. This is not a safe thing to do while driving.
3) The latest thing to happen is that the unit is now switching off and showing a battery warning even when the power is connected. I have now retired this unit even though it isn't even a year old.
Not Good enough, 2008-11-24 Not a bad product but I found that the map updates are not very good. The A2 in Kent has been re aligned in the Gravesend area several months ago, but despite my using the map share & now buying the latest map, I'm still shown as driving along off the road, and when arriving at points where there used to be roads it attempts to redirect me. I've also had great difficulty getting it to talk via bluetooth, to my Nokia N95. I bought a different window mount as the supplied one is almost useless. Having said all that the device is a lot better than my old Garmin Nuvi. The touch screen interface is very good and its easy to customise.
Let down by windscreen mount, 2009-01-07 I bought the go 520 after reading about the latest map guarantee. The update was simple so now, for just under £110 inc delivery (amazon market place - GPS Deals), I have a 520 with the latest maps, speed camera update, IQ routes and lane assist. Is this the spec of a 540?? costing over twice as much.
Plays audio (books or music) through the inbuilt FM transmitter and an offer to down 2 audio books for free (details after listening to the samples provided).
Good clear screen and lots of options. Speaks the names of the road to turn into which is handy if there are two roads close together.
I would have given this 5 stars but it is let down by the flimsy windscreen mount (mine keeps falling off)
Very pleased with this purchase and very pleased with GPS Deals
