Epic game set, 2010-01-28 Like what other reviewers have said, Steam is not hard to use, I already had Steam so it was a breeze installing the games. There were no problems during the installation process.
I have played all the games on 'The Orange Box' before and they are all brilliant but at the moment I'm playing Half Life through in order of the games.
Portal is a very fun puzzle-like game, I had much fun playing this.
Team Fortress is also very good, and is quite challenging online.
Overall, for the £11 I brought this for, it is definately worth it :).
Orange box, 2010-01-08 Played Half-life years ago and totally enjoyed it.
I had such good memories of it that I expected to be disappointed when playing it again, but guess what ? I still totally enjoy it.
This was a seminal game for the industry and it has stood the test of time.
Yes, OK, the path through the game is a bit linear, but you can get so imersed into the dystopian landscape that you don't notice that.
Bargain price just for the main game, but to get both add-ons and Portal and Team Fortress, it's like christmas has come early.
One piece of advice I would give to anyone thinking of buying - make sure you have a decent spec PC (especially graphics card) you will be able to run Half-Life2 using an onboard graphics card, but it wont do the game justice and game play may stutter in places (which will only frustrate you).
You also won't be able to play Portal without a decent card. But, if you are a hardened game-player, you'll already have the kit.
Enjoy :-)
The best video game deal around today, 2010-03-03 Valve's The Orange Box is truly the best deal I've ever spent my money on. Not only do you get Valve's amazing flagship game, Half-Life 2, but also its followups, Episode 1 and 2. Along with the entertaining multiplayer game Team Fortress 2 and the highly original puzzle game, Portal. Each game is run by Valve's signature game graphics engine, Source. Which pulls you into the game in a unique kind of immersion every time.
The Half-Life games are easy to say, masterpieces on the first person shooter scene. Worthy of the massive praise they've been given. But Valve is a company known for putting beautiful details in each major game they release so they don't stop at Half-Life!
Team Fortress 2 is a multiplayer first person shooter like they come best. Being a multiplayer game, it's expected to bring a level of competitiveness. But unlike some multiplayers who keep you on the tense edge and make you desire angry revenge after each setback, it has such a unique theme and a sense of humor that you tend to forget all frustration at times and just go with the flow.
Portal is a first person puzzle game and among the most creative ones I've seen on the market. There's not much I can say about it without possibly revealing spoilers for future players but, I will say that it keeps you occupied through the entire story and when you finish, it makes you desire Portal 2 even sooner! (Development announced by Valve)
Overrall, The Orange Box is worth every dime and I salute Valve for having put so much detail in all their work and yet, bundling it all up and handing it to the world affordable so all may enjoy the fruit of their hard labour! =)
Ridiculous value for money., 2010-02-20 The game requires steam to run and it requires the internet on the first run. Some may not like the inclusion of steam. I do. Game disks are very week and are not built to last. Numerous hiccups can increase the speed at which they degrade. With steam you have your game available on a server to download whenever you want. It turns out from digging out old serial numbers I now have the complete Half Life collection without having all the disks in working condition.
I am not a big 3D shooter fan. The half life series are first class games no matter what type of game you enjoy. The way the story and action and tension just pulls you along is breathtaking. The controls work well. The level of polish and technical excellence is above many games. The world is interesting and convincing. It works on even the most basic gaming system.
Half Life sets the bar for every other shooter and story driven action game to be compared to.
This box set is a must buy for Half Life 2 alone. With the extra episodes and one of the most original and addictive puzzle game ever it becomes a ridiculous value for money.
Another plus of the steam system is that if you have parts of this set already steam has a gift system so that a friend can enjoy anything you don't require!
Steamed up, 2010-02-04 Had I seen the small print on the box that steam was reqiured for this I would have steered well away. I am so disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing this. The last game I bought from my local charity shop that had the requirement to register with steam online (it was Race - WTCC) did not allow me to install anything other than steam as obviously the previous owner had registered the game (as there is no alternative). So unless you buy a game secondhand that has never been played, forget it. I buy other PC games and PS2 games from charity shpos and there is no problem with these. I registered with steam and emailed them and attached a photo of my game showing the CD key, but they have not bothered to reply. I have now had to uninstall the steam software and will steer well clear of it whenever possible.
