Fantastic, 2009-06-23 My last phone when the LG Viewty which I found completely useless!! This phone is brilliant, easy to connect with the computer for pictures etc. I highly recommend!
Good things come to those who wait., 2009-08-08 I have had this phone for over 2 years now, so in technical terms, this phone is fairly antique. However, I am still reluctant to upgrade to another model. Patience is certainly the key with this phone, when I took my phone out of it's box and charged it up I had so many high hopes, this being perhaps the best most expensive phone I have owned ( I have always had basic phones previously). My anticipation was very short lived and after several trips to my mobile phone provider, I was close to running my phone over with a steamroller. I will elaborate; the battery was quite frankly useless, it would last a day if I was lucky and I reluctantly bought a spare battery.
I thought that would solve my problems, alas no, it started to cut out during phone calls with a full battery, no less than 6 times on one occasion, and many more, to my shame. The general speed of the phone was slow and sluggish, however, after looking on the Nokia website I downloaded the software to update and what a difference it has made. The battery will last on average about 4 days, with camera use and the alarm being used everyday on snooze (the volume is pretty good).
I thought I would try out the cameras credentials on my holiday and although it will never replace a good digital camera, it is pretty good for those shots you wish you had a camera for. The quality of recording too, is actually quite outstanding for a phone, and it picks up sounds very well and plays it back with clear precise sound.
I know this phone is equipped with some fantastic gadgets, but I must confess I have not used this to it's potential, the maps and the wi-fi but as a camera phone it is good and after a software update, it will continue to perform as a high end phone. If you are after a music phone, it is pretty good once you get to grips with the transfer software. As for transfering pictures to your computer, it so simple even a beginner could do it, although one note of caution, Nokia software is not compatable with Apple computers and although it has bluetooth capabilities on both mentioned, it is incredibly complicated to get to grips with and requires time, patience and dedication!
But, that is my only critisism and I would recommend this phone to anyone looking for a solid (I have dropped it several times and it is still fairly unscathed) reliable and multifunctional phone, and if you are thinking of buying either the N95 or N95 8GB, bare in mind the N95 has a lens cover and an external SD slot unlike the 8GB which has neither, and as this phone is now over 2 years old, the price has dropped considerably, well worth waiting for!
Nokia N95, 2009-07-20 I have had this phone for nearly two years and for the most part, it has more than served its purpose. It has lots of features and the music player is excellent. It isn't as sleek and small as some but is still easy to carry and fits in my pocket or purse. I have read that some have had problems with battery life but mine has been fine. The only problem I have had recently is with accessing the internet services. It is slower than it used to be and sometimes won't allow me access at all for days on end.
Best phone I've ever used, 2009-05-11 This phone is extremely good. It has flaws but I would certainly get another, or try Nokia's newer phones in this range before any others.
My main praise is for the overall design. There are very few "rough edges" in the general operating system and the integration of applications, especially compared to all other phones I have used. It feels robust to me though I wouldn't want to drop it too often.
Pros
Excellent call quality
Extremely usable and well organised (eg Contacts/Calendar)
Great camera, excellent camcorder (for a phone)
GPS (I use Garmin to avoid subscription and data costs)
Good internet browser
Build quality
Well-integrated music player with slide-out control pad
Sync with MS Outlook has always worked very well (automatic through Bluetooth) meaning no lost appointments/contacts
Accelerometer for automatic orientation of photographs. Also used in games, spirit level, light saber etc!
Flash & realplayer
Good-quality reproduction of pictures & videos on TV & hifi using supplied output cable
Adobe pdf viewer
Reasonable sound quality from inbuilt speakers
Audio recording also reasonable; used like "Dictaphone" at work
Cons
Takes user time to realise how good it is (not as intuitive as iPhone and its quality is not as obvious to casual users)
GPS takes 1-2mins to lock on
No touchscreen
Keypad is slightly too small
N-Gage. Why?
Battery life around 36 hours with fairly intensive use (camera/music/wifi/calls/Bluetooth)
Fixed 8gb memory though this has never been a problem due to removing transferred videos & photos to computer & flickr for backup
Fading print on cursor key & back of phone
I recommend a mobile data package since it is so useful to have Google Maps, facebook, Youtube, phone directory, GPS traffic data etc available anywhere. Also I recommend purchasing an adhesive screen cover, mine cost £1.
I was concerned about the lack of lens cover but the camera produces consistently excellent images with a clean maybe once a week.
All in all I am extremely impressed.
18 months I put up with this...., 2010-07-08 This phone did two things for me:
1) I'd had Nokia's for years, the N73 was a let down, but I gave 'em 1 more chance: they failed.
I'll never buy again after this.
2) I got it on 'Three' network, after 4 1/2 horrible years with them, it helped to dump them for good.
NEVER in my time of owning mobiles (14 years at time of writing) have I had so much difficulty with a phone! I had it repaired & replaced twice due to mechanical fault & once due to software failure & I am a VERY careful owner.
The memory slot is not fit for purpose & broke internally on it's own, where I kept feeling the memory card pop out without warning!!!
The signal pickup was a disgrace, which a 'Three' representative admitted that they've had alot of feedback about. Once I was standing with my friend & he had full 3G on his phone with the same network & I had 1 bar at 2G...
Jesus Christ, how can this phone be declared fit for purpose with signal pickup like that ????
The Internet browsing was pathetic! about 64k a second & that's on 128MB wi-fi connection & alot of sites wouldn't even display properly.
The operating system was full of bugs, even updated to latest version! It crash for no reason sometimes, would reset itself whilst the MP3 player was on or worse yet, a call !
The Camera...AH HA HA! Is that what it's supposed to be???!!!! A close still image is reasonable, but it took up to 6-10 seconds to focus & then snap, but by then, the opportunity of what you were taking a picture of may have gone.
Long distance focus was pitiful, would get all blurry & distorted at that point I wouldn't even bother.
To give it some limited credit, video wasn't too bad.
People who've reviewed this phone have commented on it's battery life & to be honest, if your going to enable all the wi-fi, bluetooth, FM radio, 3G internet, MP3 player etc, then expect ANY phones battery life to drain quickly.
To sum up, I expected alot from this phone, it looked nice & at the time of release was a revolutionary piece of kit, but I'm afraid it fell well short.
If somebody said to me halfway through my contract "Keep this phone or have your old Nokia 3310 (i'm sure every mobile phone owner had one)", I'd be biting their hands off to take the 3310.
What a dreadful phone...& good riddance to Nokia, people are still buying them because of past reputation, not current.
