Having spent a small fortune in setting up a cubase based pc audio system based on firewire, i got the dreaded hum, n crakle n pop.
yep, sure enough for the cost of a small trip to maplins it disppeared. this is the worlds best kept secret. not even the best music shops are aware of this little sweet thing. DV247 suggested removing the earth on my lappie.
Iy you are synth fanatic like me, you can thank your lucky stars or this saviour.

I bought this to try and remove humming from a pair of Turtle beach ear force x1 gaming headphonesTurtle Beach Ear Force X1 Headset (Xbox 360). The hum was reduced but not removed quickly. The hum of when the small amplifier was rubbing against a surface also was not removed (although this was solved by taping the wire to the headphones and making the amplifier further off the ground). I have now got rid of the hums, but this product didn't do it ALL. However, for £3.00 I can't complain too much.

I had problems with an earth loop hum when recording on a laptop via a PA desk. The problem was diagnosed by running the laptop on battery power which stopped the humming. This product enables the laptop to be run via the mains and prevents the hum completely.

this item is excellent for stage work with having a lap top you get mains hum through the PA, when your laptop is connected to mains, this item stops the hum
Cure For laptop Audio Interference, 2008-01-24
I spent ages digitising my music collection. I was really devastated when after a time I found that playing mp3's or any audio on my laptop via my Hi-Fi, would cause massive interference (buzzing, crackling, hum). This was apparent as background interference, even when not playing music etc. This could be resolved temporarily by removing the psu from the laptop, clear sound again but not practical for long term use running without a power supply. It was quite clear that the psu was the problem, however I was unsure of how to remedy the problem. I trawled the net and asked around for help and to cut to the chase, just buy this small, well made, cheap device. It completely cures the problem with no apparent loss of sound quality or adverse side effects. I couldn't believe this would rid my system of the awful interference I was getting, but in seconds I plugged it in to the amp, hooked up the laptop and bingo!
