Apple TV 160gb, 2010-08-02 What more can i say that has not already been said about this great piece of equipment from Apple?
Very simple to use, even my wife is using it, she normally won't go anywhere near anything technical.
I have all of my photographs and my entire cd collection stored on it. The ease of selecting a film is sublime.
Getting back to the photographs, the picture quality is excellent and it is so much easier to view them on the big screen when family or friends call by.
I bought it after seeing one in action at my sons home on our last visit to him, i just had to have one.
And now i have! Thanks to Amazon for the very quick delivery of this item, i am sure the delivery man was waiting just around the corner.
Would it work here ?!?, 2010-07-10 I am seriously thinking of getting an Apple TV - and have the chance a friend could bring one back over from the States.
There is NO REASON WHY such an Item WOULD NOT WORK in the U.K. - Is there ?
Thinking of different T.V. Standards - U.S. using NTSC and Europe with PAL ?
ANYONE CONFIRM - PLEASE ???
Great piece of kit!, 2010-08-29 Bought one of these in May 2010 with birthday money contributions and I have to say this has totally transformed the way I watch movies etc. My wife thought it might be just a piece of gadget which would go unused but we tend to watch a movie on it at least once a week via their rental service. Also my 7 year old son loves it too, watching previews of childrens stuff and sometimes I will download something for him to watch as a treat after school. YouTube is great on it aswell. Highly recommended, infact, I have got a horror movie downloading whilst I type this, bit of late night viewing whilst wife is in bed!!
I know there are apple haters just as much as Microsoft haters but you won't be disappointed, ilike all Apple stuff which I admit to owning a lot of it is that it just works so easily. I think it is a highly underrated piece of equipment in the the Uk.
Easy to use media syncing device, 2010-08-13 I have an Apple iMac and wanted a way to play my movies and view my pictures on my 42" TV and to listen to my music through the surround system that is attached to my TV. I decided to purchase the Apple TV after reading a lot of reviews on the Internet and getting a demo. Before you buy an Apple TV you will need a widescreen TV with a free HDMI or component video connection and an iTunes account, or the Apple TV will not work.
The reasons I made my decision to buy are:
1. Price -- All my music is in iTunes and a lot of movies as well. I looked at various ways to stream video and music from my iMac and this seemed the most cost effective way to do this.
2. Ease of use -- Almost all reviews say that it is easy to setup and I went to PC World to get a demo before buying. Only two cables to connect. One for power and the other to the HDMI on your TV. I also connected an optical audio cable to my surround sound system, but this optional.
3. Compatibility -- As all of my music is on iTunes I knew that it would not be a problem to transfer music to the Apple TV or stream music from my computer to my music system speakers. As iTunes is available for Windows OS, this would also not be a problem if you do not have a Mac. A song transferred to the Apple TV in about 8 seconds and also plays fine through my music centre while being played on my computer.
My collection of movies can also be transferred to my Apple TV, or streamed from my computer. A two hour film transferred in about 3 minutes and the streaming works perfect. To view movies however, they have to be in iTunes ( mp4) format. I also have about sixty films on DVD which I have now transferred to mp4. This can be easily done, although time consuming, with free software that is available for both Mac and Windows, so I know have my entire collection of movies to play on my Apple TV. You can also rent or buy movies from iTunes. I also tried this and it takes about two hours to download a movie, but you can watch it after about ten minutes while the rest of the movie downloads.
I can also view my pictures and podcasts, either by transferring or by streaming.
The only reason it does not get five stars is that you have to transfer your videos into mp4 format, which is time consuming, but is quite easy and free. I now use the Apple TV all the time and it has become part of my lifestyle tech, so if you have similar needs to my own I would not hesitate to recommend that you buy an Apple TV.
Limited excellence (2 and a half cheers), 2010-06-29 This is a difficult review to write. The Apple TV does what it does quite well, but....and this is a big 'but', it does have severe limitations. It is little more than an iTunes replayer, and if you are happy with this limitation it is OK. Although you can get it with a reasonable size of hard drive, unlike a desk or laptop you cannot add a backup drive to it without hacking the system. You cannot play anything from, say, BBC iPlayer (or any other non-iTunes source). So why would you want this, rather than simply plugging your laptop into your TV? (OK, that's a bit fiddly and needs 2 cables, one for video and one for audio). It does allow you to download content directly from the iTunes store, and to view YouTube, but of course you can do both of these from your laptop. If you rip DVDs to iTunes, it plays them in superb quality: for example, I have one or two music DVDs, and the sound and picture quality of these ripped to iTunes and viewed on ATV is far better than playing them from my, admittedly cheap, DVD deck (but this is mainly thanks to Handbrake than to the Apple TV itself). It will synchronize (sometimes) with iTunes on one remote computer, and will stream content from any other computers with iTunes in the same network (and the quality of the streaming will depend on the speed of your network). But that's it. The little 'quick start' booklet that comes packaged with it is useless: it tells you how to plug the unit in, but I was mystified for some time about how to `register' with my home network (as it turned out, once you know how this is done it is pretty simple: it's just the booklet doesn't tell you). I bought an 'idiot's guide' to ATV hoping to discover a few more hidden abilities of the unit, but the fact is, there aren't any. It does have good Wi-Fi reception, and I was pleased to find a reasobale signal from our Wi-Fi hub in a room where we have had problems with Wi-Fi reception on some laptops (MacBooks included!). Like other Apple products, it's a cool design (well, it's a white box), and works seamlessly and without fuss: i.e. it just works (it JUST works). It's a pity it's not a much more open and versatile system.
