Blackened and coloured, 2006-12-04 I'm surprised they didn't call this Metallivision, this collection was begging for it!
The Videos '89-'04 neither functions as a greatest hits (arguably due to latter years descent) or a complete singles collection (if you counted items such as the videoless Creeping Death EP) but does document both the band's musical and visual changes starting with Jason Newsted's entry to Robert Trujillo's entry.
Whether or not you like all the songs there's some good eye candy, from the classic black and white nightmare of One, the dizzying The Memory Remains or St. Anger from San Quentin prison.
The 2 of One special feature brings to life a lost VHS collectors item that comprises of a video story introduction by Lars followed by an edit version of One without the Johnny Got His Gun clips, and then there's also the theatrical, longer version of The Unforgiven which actually is equally as perplexing as a Chris Cunningham video.
The Videos is not a tool to bring in new fans, this is simply an item for the existing ones who wish to recall MTV memories without resorting to the graininess of YouTube. And without a law suit too, I'd imagine.
I'd have liked it if this was a 2 DVD set with the fawned for Cliff 'Em All (a VHS quality DVD might stumble in selling on it's own no matter how potent the content) but that's for a later date, I guess. Good stuff.
ALL THE VIDS ON THE ONE DISC, AND, ERRR, THAT'S ABOUT IT!, 2008-06-27 You get what you see here - all the promo videos since One debuted on MTV in January 1989.
I could give 5 stars for the videos alone BUT I'm giving 4 for the DVD, because for a band of this stature, and take into account that there has never been any sort of official compilation ever released on CD, I think there could have been something more in the way of bonus features, never before seen live stuff etc.
Don't get me wrong, it's an essential for fans as it groups all the vids together on the one DVD (impossible unless you sit up all night watching Kerrang or Scuzz, with a DVD-R ready!) BUT there is nothing to see that a die hard fan won't have seen before!
It's cool to see all the stuff related to One, that was released on the now extinct 2 Of One VHS release of 1989 - not exactly new or unseen, but VERY hard to acquire now in good condition, so a PLUS there!
By all means, DO buy this, but only after Cunning Stunts DVD, S&M DVD and Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge DVD/CD set.
I can't see the need., 2008-09-11 There's nothing on this DVD that you can't find on youtube to be honest.
And with Metallica launching there own youtube channel recently, all the videos on there are official, so you need not worry about Lars getting mad at you.
