A good little perfomer, 2008-09-15 Having been using a slightly suspect USB modem (that worked - although not Vista approved) I decided to go one better and get a proper Ethernet model (most newish computers have such a connection point). I don't wander so I chose not to go the wireless route and this saves a few pounds.
(You might be interested to know - at the start - there is no reason to uninstall any previous software. There can be no conflicts with other modem or driver software. You can keep your old modem as a back-up. Might have to turn off software that tries to auto-connect though.)
First impressions. Smallish box - plenty of airflow holes - clear markings - two leads - power supply and a micro filter. Which was a bonus I did expect. Start-up wizard on CD. This checks you are plugged in correctly (my computer has an LED to say that Ethernet is attached - very clever) and you either go by hand or use the CD wizard. Only takes five minutes. If you get it wrong - you can get a pin and reset the modem to factory settings.
The real plus is this model is driver free. You type in an http code in your browser (which can be any) and up comes the calibration screen. If you don't go by hand - or want to tinker - you could even live without seeing it. This allows you to do things like put up the dedicated firewall. I recommend you look around because it gives information on things like Loss Of Service (LOS) which may be a problem with noisy lines and you can back up your calibrations in case of corruption.
The unit has its limits. It won't make your broadband service any wider or give you quicker access to over-subscribed Internet services - but I have been totally happy with the unit. The only thing I didn't like was the card instructions which presume some knowledge of the various configurations - some of which you are unlikely to want to use or even have no use in the UK. I can see a few people having to phone their ISP to help out - although I would have a go with the wizard first using the "best guess" illustrated settings.
I am very happy with the unit - it does everything you could expect at a fair price. Better newbie instructions would have made it a five star product.
So Simple !!, 2008-08-09 Bought this and paired with a D-Link gamer lounge router.
Up and running within 10 minutes, easy to set up and excellent performer.
I replaced a linksys adsl2 mue with this as I kept getting disconnects on IE whilst my p2p was unaffected. Took some headscatching to trace it but the replacement modem is performing perfectly.
Highly recommended for a seperate modem/router configuration or a single PC connection.
Great value.
Great for BT Broadband, 2008-02-13 After becoming increasingly frustrated by the performance of my old D-Link broadband wireless ADSL modem router, I opted to investigate the current range of offerings and chose to go with a two-unit solution. Instead of an integrated ADSL modem router, I chose the D-Link DIR-655 and paired it with this LinkSys ADSL/Ethernet modem. Most people probably wouldn't consider such a solution, but with the LinkSys AM200 ADSL/Ethernet modem configured to perform RFC1483 bridging and the router configured to perform PPPoE to authenticate instead of the modem, the performance easily outstrips any rival integrated offering I've come across at the same price point. The LinkSys modem itself is highly configurable and has many features that would satisfy anyone seeking a simple ADSL/Ethernet modem. The ability to be paired with a broadband wireless router to run an ADSL Internet connection renders an otherwise very good modem into a star performer. The throughput from the two-unit solution is outstanding.
Highly recommended!
