Comment: Il sogno di Scipione (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Mozart 22) [Salzburg Festival 2006] [2007]

Never performed in entirety during Mozart's lifetime it is possible the only other full stage performance was at Salzburg in 1979.

The opera relates a dream of Scipione the Roman general famous for the total destruction of Carthage, emphatically he was not the rather cuddly character we meet in the opera.

In the dream Scipione is tempted by the two Goddesses of Constancy and Fortune to throw his lot in with one or the other, and meets his long dead father and grandfather, both famous Roman Generals whose arias are less than inspiring, but the production succeeds in overcoming the problem, which was the librettists fault not Mozart's.

As always in these early operas the fifteen year old Mozart amazes us with his genius in writing for the voice, all the singers involved in them say how difficult the music is to sing.

Time seems to fly whilst Constanza (Louise Fribo) and Fortuna (Bernarda Bobro) are persuading or seducing Scipione (Blagoj Nacoski) to their point of view, the pace of the action and the quality of the performances is outstanding.

Five weeks in rehearsal it is difficult to imagine a better account of a super rarity than this beautifully staged and prepared performance.
