Terrific movie, not everyone's cup of tea, 2009-07-05 Caution! "Last Days" is a movie that a lot of people will probably find boring, especially those who expect a saucy tale about the circumstances leading to Kurt Cobain's demise. This movie takes its time, is arty, quiet, a character study, depicting the banal and often boring home life of a rock star. The athmosphere is melancholy, and nothing much happens - just like in real life. Michael Pitt is great as the doomed rock star, and "Last Days" is pretty much a one-man show. Cinematography is top-notch, the music fits perfectly.
If you are willing to spend 90 minutes in the lonely and self-destructive world of a man who could be Kurt C. and happen to like esotheric overtones and the blues, this could be the right movie for you.
I was pleasantly surprised that "Last Days" doesn't have the least bit of sensationalism about it as could be expected considering its theme.
Garbage!, 2009-08-04 I don't even know where or if I can begin.Last Days is about the suicide of a failed rockstar and the events leading upto his demise, loosely based on Kurt Cobain.I hated it and I know there will be the people and fanboys/girls defending this sheepdip but this is my single opinion.
What a Movie!!!, 2008-12-17 Last Days is a terrific film. It's inspired on the last days of the life of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. However, many people think that it is supposed to be about Cobain. These people are wrong, the film is about a fictional character named Blake, who clearly suffers with some form of emotional distress. Blake seems to like being alone in the movie, and often mumbles away to himself. I kept thinking to myself during the movie, "this doesn't replicate Cobain", but, I soon realised, it's not supposed to. Sure enough Blake is made out to look like Kurt Cobain, but thats where the line is drawn as far as I'm concerned. Michael Pitt (who played Blake) has done a superb job as this character, and director Gus Van Sant, has also done a superb job.
My favourite part of the film was the final scene, where Blake is found dead, and you see his inner soul coming out of the body, but not like how you would see it in any other film, Blakes soul climbs out as though it is struggling, seemingly to replicate the struggle of his "Last Days".
The only bad part about the movie is the choice of music for the credits, but then, who watches the credits anyway?
Overall, a fantastic film that I would recomend anyone to watch, you don't need to be a music fan, or a Nirvana fan or anything like that, if you enjoy a good movie that is confusing in parts, but you can easily understand when you take a second to think about it, then this film is for you.
My rating 10/10 easily!
awful.truly awful.waste of 2hours, 2010-05-14 this film is so bad.im a nirvana and kurt cobain fan but this film is certainly no tribute to the man, it is so boring.i watched it on fast forward its just some actor walkign about doing nothing, smoking a few cigarettes.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. 2 hours i;ll never get back
Terrible, 2008-11-16 I would strongly echo the sentiments expressed by the other '1 star' reviews. There are some films you watch where you realise it is not to your taste but appreciate that taste is a subjective thing and that there are elements that others may greatly appreciate. That was not the case here - objectively I simply cannot understand why this film was made or why others would consider it to have redeeming features. If I hadn't bought this in another jurisdiction I would be taking it back for a refund (which I have never done on the basis of the artistic merit of a film). Some of the higher reviews on here seem to suggest that it is somehow 'artistic' and 'experimental' - it is definitely different but to me it is a wholly failed experiment.
