Great music, poor recording, 2007-06-05 On balance I think this is well worth having, but unfortunately it is rather marred by what can only be poor sound mixing. At first I was inclined to blame the acoustics of the recording venue, but then I realised that I had some other baroque CDs which were recorded in the same church (one with exactly the same line-up as this CD) and the sound quality of those was sparkling, a fact which rather speaks for itself.
Having said that, this is good music well performed. In particular, the vastly talented and eternally enthusiastic Charles Daniels manages to shine through all the technical problems in the "Alleluia"; it lasts less than a minute, but it is a little gem. I was not previously very familiar with Buxtehude's music, but certainly on the basis of this recording I shall be looking out for more.
So I would recommend it, but with this one caveat: if you are not already familiar with all the soloists, don't judge the ones you don't know on the basis of this recording. It is not a true reflection of their abilities, and that is no fault of theirs.
a run through, 2006-02-27 Buxtehude's cantatas are perhaps not as exciting as, say, the slightly earlier generation of Weckmann, Bruhn, Knupfer, Bohm, but Koopman (the box on Erato - deleteed I reckon effectively) and especialy Immerseel on a a FANTASTIC disk on Channel managed to make them sparkle. Here, although sung well and played accurately, they seem to be rather pallid - perhaps becuase the scoring is so unvaried. (Other of Bach's contemporaries - as King has called them also on Hyperion - Knupfer and Zelenka especially -- use wind and keyboard more vibrantly). I shouold say this was for REAL enthusiasts rather than as an introduction in spire of the presence of a crowd pleaser such as Kirkby. Very 'English' basically - I reckon Hermann Max and band would do rather better in this repertory.
