Robustness falls at the first hurdle (great game, though), 2009-11-26 I bought this game for my racing-fanatical two-year-old, not to mention the rest of the family, two years ago.
Today, I am looking around for a replacement, as although his fanaticism remains intact, unfortunately, the game itself doesn't (and before you jump to conclusions, it's not the youngster who's destroyed it).
The game itself is charming, and great fun. The horses and their jockeys all have real character. The weights of all are varied (the sought-after jockey is particularly skinny), and you spin a dial to find out which horse and rider combination will be yours for a particular race. The four lane track makes the winner even less predictable. The horses contain simple circuitry and (I believe) a capacitor, which is charged by inserting a plug into the horse's mouth, at the 'charging barn'.
The problem is, parts of ths game are simply too delicate, and unreliable, for sustained use. After a few incident-free races, one of the horses died, refusing to charge up ever again.
Although the horses are adjustable, one became consistently stronger than the others, and started winning pretty well all the races, regardless of the jockey riding.
Also, the charging barn's indicators have become unreliable, so you can't be sure if a horse is fully charged, or not.
In summary, a great game, spoilt by build quality, leading to a limited working life.
OMG!!!, 2004-07-31 This game is SO good, honestly, when we opened the box, it looked like another ordinary toy, but as soon as we'd set up the track and set those horses going, we havn't been able to put it down!!!ps. We've gone through more batteries than we've bought before ever...They do last a while with this toy, it's just we havn't stopped playing with it :) But maybe they should concider making an adapter for the mains for it... Nice job on an incredibly addictive game!!! Well worth the money...and definatly a family game...no fun on your own...
