Amazon.co.uk Review
When PlayStation first launched in 1995, Ridge Racer was one of the launch titles; now Sony has released a new console and along with it a new Ridge Racer, Ridge Racer 5.

If you've played any of the other Ridge Racer titles, you can jump right into Ridge Racer V and hold your own. The new Dual Shock 2 takes a bit of getting used to, if only because the d-pad takes a lot more pushing to get your vehicle to turn. Other than that, power-slides work like a charm.

Ridge Racer V graphics seem to be better than any other racer ever created on a console. The vehicles have more polygons than you can imagine, and their reflective surfaces are just dazzling. When you go up through the gears, the sense of speed that Namco has created is second to none and showcases the horsepower of the PlayStation 2. Drive through an underpass and things get darker; exit into an open area and the glare will seem blinding.

Gamers will find plenty of vehicles to choose from at the outset with more available as you improve. This will obviously add replay value to the arcade racer. The season mode resembles Ridge Racer Type 4, without straying too far from Namco's successful formula. Those who dislike the Ridge Racer series will still dislike the power sliding, and it's lack of tracks. The tracks included here feature designs that embody non-stop excitement with hair-pin turns and jumps galore.

With both this and the more sober Gran Turismo 2000, gamers can't complain about any lack of quality racers. While radically different from each other, both are great games and definitely worth checking out. --Todd Mowatt

If you like the ridge series (like myself )then you will love this game. The graphics are quite impressive and it moves at a fast pace providing excitement and tension as you have to turn extremely tight corners at high speeds. The gameplay has a good solid arcade feel for it, making it a game you can pick up again and again for a quick blast. There are a lot of fun modes like driving a special round yellow man's car.(guess who). Overall another good title from namco moving a grat series of racing games onto the next generation. If you like ridge games then you'll love it and if you love good, quality and exciting games then look no further. There is hardly any better than namco for excellent arcade games.

A complete waste of money! We bought this game with the launch of the PS2 but have never played it successfully. This also meant we didn't buy Grand Turismo 3 when it came out. However, the reduced price of GT3 tempted us back in and well, what a difference! In GT3, you are told how to do some of the moves. You get credit for trying ...not only for winning. In short, for the casual/novice gamer GT3 is playable while Ridge Racer is not.

This game is good until the final race the track slow your so much it makes it almost impossible to win I have won yet and the radio is very sexist their be no female racing drivers yet but i many girls who love to pick up the joypad and do a few laps. I would stick with Ridge Racer Type 4 if I were you it more fun than this one and your more than enough power to help you progress.

I'm not sure why Ridge Racer V has recieved such a negative response. Maybe it's because RR fans expected something more and feel short changed or perhaps certain gamers are over picky and impatiently forked out full price for the game. Is it worth the £40 or so it was originally sold for? No, but what game is?

The only other Namco driving game I've bought was 10 years ago, Rage Racer, on the PS1 which I thoroughly enjoyed so I decided to get this. Out of the half a dozen games I possess from this particular genre, Ridge Racer V gets played the most. Why? Because it's pound for pound the best racer out there I've played in my opinion. Yes, GT may have enormous depth but I don't want to spend decades on a game.

This is a stylish arcade type of racer, where you race against a large field of 13 cars and that's what a like. It may be not the most realistic but compared to a game like Outrun 2006, it excels in most departments. My biggest criticism of RR V is the lack of tracks and the abysmal commentary although thankfully this can be turned off.

Nowadays this game is selling for a few quid and if you haven't played any of the Ridge Racer games and are looking for an uncomplicated get-up-and-go racer and aren't the type to throw a wobbly if you can't get to drive your dream machine, buy it! To sum it up, Ridge Racer V is the benchmark for arcade style racing whereas GT is the benchmark for the complete motor freak!

Well I quite like it. It'll never win any awards but it's an easy way to burn a spare hour or two every now and then. Buy yourself a wheel and some pedals and it really comes into it's own. Mind you, I must admit that GT3 is a superior game in pretty much every respect.
