Brio Lights and Sound Crossing Review, 2002-01-24 Comment: The Lights and Sounds Crossing by Brio is an interesting addition to any wooden railway set. It works in two ways ... you can either activate the crossing features by pushing a small button (a little tricky for very tiny hands at first, but they soon get the hang of it !) or it can be activated automatically when a train passes over the crossing (by the magnets on the trains).
Upon activation, the red lights (one on either side of the track) flash and there is a 'ding ding' noise (very similar to the sound made by railway crossings in real life !).
Whilst the sound and light effects are good, I was a little disappointed that the automatic activation doesn't occur until the train is most of the way through the crossing .. a little pendantic maybe, but how do you explain to a small child that the sounds and lights are to warn people not to cross, when with this item it would be too late as the train is already crossing by the time they start ! It would have been nice if Brio could have made the track piece longer such that the magnetic activator could be located further away, and the lights and sound started before the train reached the actual crossing !
One other thing to note, is that this does NOT have an off switch ... the only way of silencing it is to take the batteries out ! An off switch would be an enormous improvement as the sound does get rather penetrating when you are subjected to it for long periods of time !
That said.....my daughter think it's the bees-knees and I would recommend this item to anyone with a wooden train set !!
