Vienna, a stuffed labrador, terrorists and incest., 1999-02-24 Comment: Well we're not talking John Irving at his very best here -if you're familiar with the rest of his output- nevertheless this is a very funny and highly original book. Master as always of the unlikely twist, every few pages Irving sends you a hundred miles away from where you would expect the plot logically to take you. Again Irving treats us to a generous dose of the objects of his obssesion: Vienna, wrestling (although this time around it takes the form of mere body building),prostitutes and bizarre sex. Garp offered us a foretaste of what was to come with "The pension Gritzpatrick"(excuse my German)which ended up evolving and taking the shape of New Hampshire. Overall, as with any of Irving's books a good read but a far cry from his best work.
