Comment: I have read all of Gail Godwin's more recent books and thought they were great. So I dragged this heavy book all the way from the USA to London, looking forward to reading one of her older books. It turned out to be a huge disappoimtment...it was one of the most pretentious and tedious books I've ever read, with few redeeming features. I only kept on reading it because I hoped it would improve and out of loyalty to the author, whom I usually like very much. Don't bother with it-- but read the subsequent ones if you haven't already.
