Average rating of 3/5Average rating of 3/5Average rating of 3/5Average rating of 3/5Average rating of 3/5 A Nice Supplement, 2008-08-07
Comment: This course is a nice supplement to your Greek learning IF you have other sources. In my opinion, it will be VERY difficult for you to "teach yourself greek conversation" if this is your sole/first source of greek.

I used this after completing Teach Yourself Beginner's Greek and basically, it contains many dialogues (with associated comprehension tasks) and some pointers on vocabulary or grammar used. I don't think I would have coped too well if I hadn't done another Greek course(s) first as this has only a small booklet (with no Greek script) with some short explanations and a vocab list but it's not very in depth for either Greek language or culture. It's 'just' (but I don't say this in a derogatory way) a tool for lots of listening comprehension practice. To this end, it is a good tool, because even if it doesn't give a wide grounding in grammar or huge vocabulary, it does give a fair amount of varying dialogues.

The 3* rating is because, in my opinion, it is too expensive: the "Beginner's" and "Complete" courses in the Teach Yourself range have (I estiamte) roughly the same amount of aural material on their cds - but they also have several hundred pages for reading and writing practice, and more in depth grammar/cultural notes. So even if you only want help with "Greek Conversation", you might as well invest in the books they have as much dialogue, but more explanation. Of course, if you already own the above courses, I can recommend this in addition.

By all means, purchase this item to improve your listening skills, but not as your first Greek source and not for anything approaching £20.
