higgledy-piggledy, 2003-12-16 I bought this course because of the cartoons and crosswords. I thought it was going to be fun. It isn't. It is a real pain, that's what it is. I'll explain what I mean with some examples.
In unit 1 you have 'estas bom?' in the dialogues and you learn that this is the informal way of asking how are you. You also learn that 'como te chamas?' is the informal way of asking what is your name. All this is using the verb for 'tu' which you are told is the informal way of saying you. In the exercises you have to say 'como te chamas? yourself. In unit 3 how to form verbs is explained for the first time. You learn the endings but the ending for 'tu' is missing. This did not make sense to me and I bought a grammar, not this author's, I must say.
Some grammar names appear to have been invented for this book. For the future the equivalent to the English I am going to is used. Vamos visitar o Japao no ano que vem, we are going to visit Japan next year. In some units you are told that this is the present tense, in others you are told that this is the simple future. In truth it is neither. I have found the explanation in my new grammar.
The book is positively confused and confusing.
Perfect Introduction for Basic Conversation, 2004-05-11 It is an ideal text for learning basic Portuguese conversation for travel(not really for business). I travelled to Portugal after learning this text down to Unit 17, and IT WORKED WELL! It will let you learn very basic daily conversation skill with a reasonable amount of grammatical explanation and vocabulary. I think this is much more excellent than other texts in "Teach Yourself Beginner's XXXX" series.
