This text is a good basic introduction to the area of computer networking. It covers a lot of essential topics in a straitforward easy to understand manner, with a bias towards the upper levels of the protocol stack. I have found it useful to read to get a handle on a topic before working through it in more depth - you will need further resources for specific projects or postraduate work.

This is recommended by Edexcel as a main textbook. However, on reading quickly through the book I have found that if fails to describe up to date technologies. Most readers will find that the content is not appropriate to current systems eg: Novell netware based protocols are stated to be the norm in most LAN implemntations and there is lots of detail about ISDN.
