Average rating of 3/5Average rating of 3/5Average rating of 3/5Average rating of 3/5Average rating of 3/5 Useful book but ultimately disappointing, 2004-12-23
There are some great useful tips and in-depth articles in this book that many players will find useful. However, I was disappointed that many articles are not really useful as a pool player - I would've bought a book about trick shots if I wanted to know about trick shots.

About a third of the book is about three-cushion, which I'd never even heard of 'till I read this. I'm in the UK, maybe three-cushion is more popular in the states (where the author is from).

The book could easily be more coherant. I had to read many sections twice or more before they made any sense at all. The section sub-titled "Thiry-three Secrets of the Game" contains thirty-eight points.

The book has certainly helped me improve my playing tremendously, however it doesn't contain everything I need to know to reach the highest level as it claims on the front cover. Still, I would recommend this book because Byrne backs up his tips with in-depth analysis, tests and examples. Everything he states is convincing and there's he explodes a few popular myths that you probably thought were true.

Byrne does an excellent job of showing a variety of interesting shots and examples of when to use them. He broaches some of the more subtle points of the game and shows not just that they work, but how. Bob Jewett's work on the physics side of this book is phenomenal. If you're sure you can't learn any more about pool or billiards, this book will change your mind. A truly comprehensive guide to the next level of play.
