Not so much a political history of Canada as a history of the politics. The narrative is heavily skewed towards Ontario,Quebec and events in Ottawa. While the Quebec Question has been a major issue in Canadian history, a lot more has happened. The development of the west coast and the history of the First Nations get very brief treatment. This is not a history of Canada's people - this book is awaited,

This book gives an expansive overview of Canadian history, but leaves a feeling that there may have been important bits left out. For example, the development of the western provinces is not covered in much detail: their politics and economics are skimmed over. The trouble probably arises because this has been written as `top-down' history: most of the topics are dealt with from the point of view of legislators and diplomats. This is to the neglect of detailing facts `on the ground' throughout each of the provinces - surely a hugely important aspect of Canada's history. The breezy style is sometimes irritating rather than acceptably chatty, though the narrative flows well and the book is not a chore to read.
