Poor excuse for extreme violence, 2009-02-28 I read this book on its year of publication in 2006, having bought it because I loved the film Fight Club, which I saw was based on another of Palahnuk's novels. So I expected more from this book, which I thought was just a poor excuse for extreme violence, full of a bunch of nasty characters in a ludicrous situation. I'm all up for the violence: I like Bret Easton Ellis, whose books can be much more violent than this, but with Ellis it means something, it has a point. Haunted does, however, demonstrate some panach in the manner in which it is told, so I won't rate it a one. Still, I've decided to get rid of it, and that's why I'm writing this review.
Haunting me, 2009-05-28 Chuck Palahniuk doesn't try to provide just a set of haunting stories here but a method of haunting you, with a series of disturbing tales which will always come back to get you at horrifying points of time. Weaving together each of these stories, is an overall plot about a group of writers trapped in a retreat. This is definitely not recommend for anyone of a weak disposition, but if you're made of sterner stuff, enjoy! I certainly did.
Best Palahniuk book ever!, 2008-12-22 I have read all his books and this is without a doubt my favorite. Palahniuk shows off what he is really good at - short storys. Everyone of which is in their own right haunting, deeply disturbing, and unforgettable. The ties that make up the whole are also just as well crafted, drawing you into a sense of paralysis and paranoia that is unrivaled by any other book that i have read. I finished it over a year ago but it has never fully left my mind. If you like Palahniuk and haven't read this then do it now.
Okay..., 2009-02-24 After all the hype, I was really looking forward to being totally freaked out by this book. Whilst 'Guts' made me uncomfortable and slightly nauseous, that was it!
The other stories were ok whilst the poems were annoying.
Having said all of that, reviews for CP's other work has been favourable and I will try one of his other titles.
disappointed, 2010-06-28 didn't work for me. was expecting lots of adult themes, violence, unpleasantness etc. there were a couple of omg moments, but actually a lot of this book isn't that shocking, so don't be put off. some of the short stories were entertaining.
but the whole overarching story that is supposed to link everything seemed rather contrived. there were too many characters for any of them to develop sufficiently. and I found the poems interspersed throughout the book rather annoying.
