As the proud mom of two welsh border collies, I too bought this book at a railway station based purely on the front cover picture. It's a simple but engaging story that would leave even the most hard-hearted reader with a basketful of intense emotions from one end of the scale to the other. This book quite literally had me laughing out loud, sobbing and then laughing again as I related with both canine and human characters alike. If you've ever owned, loved, lost or shouted at a dog, you'll thoroughly enjoy this read.

I was suckered into buying this book for the picture of the ever so cute puppy on the front cover! But it's a little misleading as the book is actually about rehoming an adult collie as opposed to taking on a cute puppy. Having said that, it's a gentle book that tells the tale of life with a number of dogs - border collies and labradors. I admit to shedding a few tears at one point in the book (won't spoil it for you). The book is gentle and evocative; I got to visualise some pretty scenery in the mountains and by the ocean where the writer took his dogs. But the front cover is a little misleading - it says: 'Rescuing Devon, the most troublesome dog in the world' but actually he's difficult and dangerous and a bit awkward, but it doesn't sound like that HUGE a struggle. This is a book from 2003 which has been repackaged and given a new front cover (I think based on the success of the Marley and Me book by Grogan). I did enjoy it though.

I bought this book days after i took on a very young puppy,he too like devon was a handful to say the least.I could relate to this book in almost every way,as we also have a rescure dog who had a few hang ups. This book made me laugh so hard i cried and it also made me cry with sadness. It is beatufilly written in such a way that you feel the love for these dogs radiating right out of the pages at you.I honeslty couldnt put this book down and i was sad when i had finnished it, but it is the type of book that you will want to read again and again.

What a beautiful book! I don't give many books the honour of remaining in my library due to lack of space but this one will be with me forever. It is a simple story but if you have dogs or have loved dogs then you will relate to this book. It has inspired me not to give up on my rebellious schnauzer Wilbur but to plod on like Jon did. He managed the subject of euthenasia so touchingly as well, he put my feelings into words and gave me release on decisions I have made in the past. This is a lovely book and well worth a read.
