Arrived less than 24 hours after ordering. Thank you Amazon. Initial set up was painless. Just make sure you have connected the aerial lead first. I particularly like the DV input. Works a treat with my Canon MV960. I have connected my Sky+ via SCART at the moment and the results look OK. In the process of getting Component lead and will try that. Editing is quite easy to cope with. If you wish to edit programmes copy them to the HDD and edit on there before commiting to a DVD. I haven't tried copying protected VHS to the HDD/DVD yet so don't know if it can. The only bad thing I can think of at the moment is the remote control does not allow control of other Toshiba equipment.

19/08/09. Had it for one week now. When editing, copy to HDD first then create a 'playlist' of the file. This allows editing without changing the original recording (do NOT delete the original recording yet). When you are ready to commit to DVD or VHS for that matter use the 'playlist' to dubb across. When this is done and you are satisfied then delete the original.

The unit is connected to a Tosh LCD via HDMI. Any of the inputs (VHS, DTV or Anologue) are viewed on the TV via HDMI the XV48 can upscale to your requirements.

I do not envisage using the XV48 to record any off air TV as I use Sky HD for that.

I think you can tell that I am extremely pleased with this fantastic piece of electronic wizardry!

This Sony replaces my 7" Phillips portable.

Used primarily by my children and also on flights & holidays, 2 key areas of importance for me are battery life and durability. The Sony ticks both boxes giving a true 5-hour battery life and a sturdy well put together frame made from quality material.

I found the image quite detailed, clear and easy to view, sound quality good for the size of the unit and included all the features you would expect on a DVD player

Compared to my old unit and other units I looked at, in today's market, even when put against some much more expensive units the Sony still won the day.

I'm Sure there are some better units out there but I could not find one at this price point.

The unit also features audio & composite video INPUT as well as OUTPUT, 2 x headphone sockets, USB input for memory sticks and card readers as well as a hold button to disable the unit's controls if required. The screen also opens fully flat to the unit (180 deg not 360deg). There is however no S-video or component out/inputs.

The thin battery attaches secularly to the bottom of the unit creating a well-proportioned player that does not feel particularly bulky. Charge time from flat can be up to 5 hours with a battery indicator function to tell you how much charge is left.

The unit comes with a remote control & a car battery adaptor that plugs in to the cigarette lighter socket.

As for formats it will play DVD DVD-RW/-R, DVD+RW/+R, VIDEO CD/MUSIC CD CD-RW/-R, DivX, MP3 and JPEG

After extended use I am very pleased with the unit and would happily recommend it as a cost effective 7" portable DVD player

This is a versatile and intuitive DVD player with a superb 1080p upscaling digital tuner and hefty 250GB hard drive. The whole package is well built, looks cool in black, and is simplicity itself to set up. When you get around to the more advanced features, check out the jukebox facility (the recording of albums onto the hard drive), which comes with a nifty database listing every track - easily updated via the memory stick included as part of the package. Flexibilty is also second-to-none if you like archiving material to disc as all formats are covered and partial editing in DVD-RAM is especially useful for knocking out commercials or any non-relevant material. But to get the very best out of the DMR-EX78E-K you need to use the HDMI output and attach a compatible LCD or Plasma TV, 5.1 amp and surround speaker system - the resulting audio-visual feast will guarantee in an instant that this beauty won't be up for replacement in a hurry. I've got three DVD/HDD units on the go at present - one is a home cinema in a box which I now use solely as my amp and speaker setup, the second is a multi-region player for imported DVDs, and the above is my pole-position kit. All Panasonic.

Put simply, this is unpretentious 'high-end' technology - without the accompanying 'high-end' prices. Put even more simply, the DMR-EX78E-K has delivered the goods and therefore exceeded my (unwaveringly) high expectations. The only step up from here is the step up to Hi-Definition.

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The one I bought was with USB flash slot as well, but could not find it. Although I bought it at amazon. Long story short very good DVd player for its price. Only downside is remote control buttons are not responsive. You need to press twice for the player to do what you asking it to do. Recommend, very good product

Having been very happy with Toshiba products in the past- a microwave oven which finally had to be replaced after 24 years and my Toshiba rear projection tv, I decided to replace my Phillips player which died exactly one week after the 12 month expiry. As I have a huge collection of dvds from diferent regions, the first port of call was the multi-region hack. This was accomplished in seconds. The box says that it will play dvd-r's that are recorded on a dvd recorder but might not play others. However it plays the several PC recorded dvd-r's I've so far tried perfectly. Highly recommended. I just hope Toshiba are still building their products with the same durability I've come to expect and appreciate.

Had this now for some time but just finished watching I-Robot in Blu-Ray and started browsing the web. This player is proper quality and the sound is class! only wish I'd spent more on a better tv to go with the true sound that this creates. PS3 is proper quality too - its come down in price since I got this so do yourself a favour and grab it now!

Plugged this into my Panasonic 42" HD TV and was amazed by the picture quality of the recordings. Very easy to set up and use. The other big wow factor is the Upconversion of normal DVDs to 1080p the difference in quality is very noticeable. So much so that I I've stopped buying the more expensive Bluray disks for my PS3.

The only negatives are that there is no HDMI lead in the box and that the manual is a bit confusing, which seems to be a Panasonic trait.

It's much smaller than its predecessor which isn't entirely a good thing if you stack your components as my Sky box hangs over the back by a few inches but the player is wider than it so it would look daft on top. Connections are all well labelled and simple although the ac socket is a little loose. Remote is a little garish compared to the BDP-S300. It definitely starts up faster than before though still not as fast as a DVD player and the drawer doesn't seem as well damped as the S300. Internet connection was automatic and a swift check for updates revealed it was current. I tested it with my one and only 7.1 disc and the sound was superb, can't say that I noticed the extra speakers but the receiver says they were working so who am I to argue. Also tested it with 'Cars' which has a notoriously long start up and that was a great improvement, no more looking at blank screens and blue loading bars. The Dolby True HD soundtrack is fantastic, the cars really sound like they are racing round the room. Haven't tested the blu ray live yet and may never do so as I'm not a big fan of extras so overall Sony, good job.
