Got this for my 6 year old and he loves it. He has played with the easier Meccano so he picked this one up quite quickly. He was able to follow the instructions himself and make the models.
If you child has not played with Meccano before then I think a four year old would be too young. However if your child has lot of experience making things and following instructions then a four year old would be ok with a some or little help.
Once making the items that moved when you turned the wheel he soon wanted the set 3 motorised one too.
The orange plastic box that the parts come in makes a great tool box and can hold much more parts than is provided in the set. It opens out from the top just like a proper builders tool kit/box.

I enjoyed making this car, but found the sizes of bolts/screws difficult to determine becuase the writing in the book was very very small.

Great for my 3 year old. He loves making things. Only takes 10 mins or so to build each model. Longer if you let them look at the pictures, find the correct piece, and build it themselves. Hours of fun.

Great intro to construction, 2010-01-03
As with many other reviews, this starter Meccano set is perfect for young hands & imaginations. Our 3 year old loves it and will be extended in time with the next sets in the series. Only gripe is the nuts coming loose so easily but this is a great excuse to knock it down and build something else! Excellent product!

 well designed toy, 2010-01-04
My 4 year old got this as a Christmas present and loves playing with it. It has larger pieces than standard Meccano which are also flexible and is therefore easier to build, but still quite challenging.
At first my son needed quite a lot of help but now, having built everything a couple of times he can do this mostly on his own, with occasional help needed tightening screws. He's learned to follow the picture diagrams and use the screwdriver and spanner, but I'd say the age suitability would depend on the child. My son's quite good with his hands and tends to enjoy fiddly little things (like Hama beads). I've noticed on the Meccano website they have now changed the packaging to say from age 5, not 4 as the amazon picture shows, but I would recommend it for a 4 year old, particularly if you have time to help him/her with it the first few times it's used (and you might even enjoy reliving your own childhood memories of Meccano!)
THis kit can be built into 4 different designs - all are lovely, sturdy vehicles which a child will enjoy playing with for a while before re-building.
Definitely a good buy as it has been played with over and over again since Christmas.
