Good for learning., 2008-03-10 Bought this for my grandchildren and they love it. The sticker Book is a big incentive and keeps them at it. The seven year old was struggling at school and working through the maths and English, with some help, gave him a lot of confidence. The younger two join in, and also do the lower level, and it becomes a joint exercise. All good stuff.

Become a Human Body Explorer is an interesting CD-ROM full of information about the human body. It's aimed at children aged 6-10 years old, but would be best suited to older end of this age range. Seemore Skinless, the helpful skeleton, guides the children through a wide range of games, quizzes and experiments. Children can play four fun interactive games, which involve, for example, collecting body parts by answering questions and learning about the body and choosing how Seemore should spend his day. There is an excellent search feature so that children can access information screens on a very wide range of topics. (Parents of younger children may want to supervise children's use of this, as there is information about reproduction and how our bodies change.) Children also have the opportunity to create their own Secret File, which contains information about themselves and can become a scrapbook of facts. So once children have visited the information screens, played the games, answered brainteaser questions and found out amazing facts, they will have discovered all they need to know about the human body. Become a Human Body Explorer would be a good buy for parents or teachers of children aged 8-11 years old. It encourages children to explore and find out about the human body in a fun and interesting way. --Amanda York
truly brilliant, 2002-10-12 I have three children ranging from seven to eleven and I can honestly say we have never had so much fun exploring the human body. I am a health professional and have studied human biology etc, but I still managed to learn. My kids absolutely loved it, they were inviting friends around to explore with them, the laughter and giggles was amazing. Yet another brilliant 'explorer' title.

This is a very comprehensive, excellent software program for children in year two, aged six to seven years, which supports the National Curriculum and covers reading, maths, geography, history, the solar system, art and music. The activities are not classroom based, as in the case of many other CD-ROMs in this range, but they are built around adventures that begin when school ends. CJ the Frog and his friend Newton begin a journey to their secret clubhouse. Your child can develop maths skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, money value, measuring and logic) while racing sharks and crossing dangerous rivers. Reading and comprehension skills are also covered, including spelling, parts of speech, nouns, verbs and adjectives, and the countries can be discovered while learning about the people and events in history. All activities are presented in a fun way and are offered at different levels with progress reports, assessments and a printable workbook included. There is also a pamphlet containing basic technical and installation information, which should be read before starting. --Susan Naylor
Jump Ahead Year 2, 2003-02-03 I am twelve years old now, and have had this programme since I was eight and (even now) I still enjoy it. I love the many things for you to do and the way you can build up points on every activity you do. Every 100 points you get (each activity, depending how hard it is, wil give you from 2-15 points) you get a stamp from the Post Office in the game and build up your collection. I love the way it has been designed in a school. There is a clubhouse (which you get to by climbing the tree or using the secret lift), a classroom, and then many floors below. The graphics are all really good, and fun. In the classroom for instance, you get to write stories and see animated songs about grammar, and when you click on different items in the classroom, they animate. The songs about the grammar don't sound that interesting do they? Think again. They are funny and catchy and... I'm quite embarrassed to admit this (but it's the truth)...that listening and watching these songs completly made me learn what a noun, a verb and an adjective are!!!!! You go around freely, with our friends CJ (a large friendly frog) and Newton (a funny firefly). The activities go from Maths, to English, to matching pairs, to listening to songs...to jumping logs and crocs, shooting at aliens from Mars and even playing football!!!! You won't even notice you are learning some key lessons in life, as well as having great fun, and I really recommend this CD ROM to any child from the age of 6 to 10, as you can adjust the levels of the games so it's never to easy! So my advice is...go out there and buy it!!! by Rachel James

Super game, 2006-03-24 My two and half year old daughter loves this game. Feeding Bruce the shark with kelp balls has taken her the longest time to handle, but without doubt this game has helped her really come to grips with using a computer mouse. The memory game, which involves clicking on coloured shapes in rhythm, seems to really frustrate her, but that is obviously lack of understanding. Her memory skills with turning over rocks to reveal matching pairs of pictures has astounded me. The graphics and sound are excellent and we have never had any problems loading the game. Difficult to discuss all the features or good points, because there are so many. Enjoy.

Her Interactive
Castle Malloy, 2008-10-30 This is a point and click adventure. Number 19 in the Nancy Drew series by Her Interactive. It's target audience is primarily young females. There is no violence and no cussing in the game. It is clean.
The controls worked well, it's all mouse-driven.
The story is the weakest part of the game. Nancy flies over to Ireland, drives a hire car to the Castle then proceeds to solve the mystery on the same night! There are other improbables, but it's impossible to mention them without giving away spoilers.
The puzzles were not all well integrated into the story. Mostly doable, some were difficult at least at the senior level. I liked the sheep (fun) and the flying (unusual). Mini games (to earn money) are doll positioning, dart playing, spot the difference, drumming and bartending. The latter is a bit iffy with the target audience in mind. Some of the puzzles were merely tedious.
Graphics are well done, but dark and gloomy throughout. The available ventures were sparse. Castle consists of library, nursery (covered in dust and cobwebs), great hall (with end wall blown out), enterance gate and later a tower. The Screaming Banshee Inn is one room, mini games, and behind the bar. The grounds have roughly half a dozen points of interest. In previous ND games there were interesting rooms to explore to relieve the pressure of puzzling out the problems. In this game there was little relief.
Sounds were well done, I liked the background music which was cheerful in contrast to the gloomy graphics.
Characters within the game were sparse too. Bride, Groom, would-be best man, castle servant. Meaningful conversations were few and far between. The Irish get a bad press.
Overall verdict. Only an average game. Not near the best in the ND series. Fans of the series will buy, but casual players are best advised to choose the previous game.

Every child is naturally curious and we all know that children like to play. The Jump Ahead Toddlers (ages one-and-a-half to three) CD-ROM has been specifically designed and produced to capture a child's imagination and to engage their attention by providing fun activities that will stimulate their young minds, making them want to play them again and again. Throughout, children are encouraged to learn letters and numbers, shapes and colours, learn about animals, to discover music and musical instruments, basic vocabulary, listening skills, mouse control, songs and rhymes, IT skills, hand-to-eye co-ordination and many more useful life skills. The music is bright and lively, the graphics are colourful and the whole is explicit, clear and easy to understand. The CD-ROM is easy to load and particularly helpful is a special mode to keep children from accidentally exiting the program. Help will obviously have to be given to the very young, as the program is aimed at children from 18 months to three years old, but before long, the child will want to do the activities by themselves. There is also a pamphlet that has basic information regarding installation and other technical hints and tips, which should be read before beginning. This is one of a range entitled "Children", a range of "educational entertainment that not only keeps the little ones quiet, but teaches them essential core skills and tentatively introduces them into the realms of computing." --Susan Naylor
Switching to 256 colours, 2007-09-13 This is an excellent product with great simple graphics and lovely songs and music for toddlers learning to use a mouse.
For those running windows XP, this software will not run from the CD as it requires a 256 colour mode. The solution posted below regarding right clicking on the program and adjusting settings under the compatibility tab does not work as the latter only applies to installed programs on the hard drive. This software does not install - it runs from the CD. The actual fix is a 1.2 MB patch at the publisher's web site www.focusmm.co.uk/support (When at the web site, you will need the product id number which is ESS354/D).
Have fun with the software - it is great fun!

One of the few CD Rom's that really is suitable for this age group, 2007-03-24 I bought this title originally over 10 years ago for my eldest daughter and have just bought it again to get a copy more suited to Windows XP - it really is that good, and it is the only CD Rom I have found that I would think is truly suitable for young children. We have had others that have just been too difficult without a lot of help, either with the activity or with the necessary mouse skills. In Jump Ahead the activities are simple enough to enable 3-4 year olds to be able to tackle them as well as having to learn to use the mouse. The items to click on are suitably large and well defined. The activities are challenging enough without being too difficult. The instructions are clearly said. (though be warned, the tunes may stick in your head!) The whole Jump Ahead series is brilliant, and I thoroughly recommend this as an introduction to using a computer.
