Kanye West
808s & Heartbreak sees Kanye West move somewhat controversially away from hip hop towards what he calls "pop art"--not the art movement championed by Andy Warhol, but his own artful pop music. This translates as Kanye dropping his rap shtick and picking up the Auto-Tune to help even out his singing voice, and trading his usual summery bounce for the brittle, wintry sound of the electronic Roland TR-808--the drum machine used in early hip hop and techno. Where previous Kanye albums have been about bling, 808s & Heartbreak is a paean to pain and misery. Prompted by the recent death of his mother, opening track "Welcome to Heartbreak" sets the album's key themes--lyrics about the emptiness of fame and wealth crooned over a desolate electronic backdrop. Things don't get much cheerier as Kanye continues to pour his heart out on songs like "Coldest Winter", "Street Lights" and the slow jam "Say You Will". High profile high guests like Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne and Herbie Hancock can't lift the gloom either, but the consistent aura of sadness that envelopes this unexpected album is ultimately what makes it so compelling. --Danny McKenna
Quality Music - Who Cares What Genre, 2008-12-03 It's funny to read the negative reviews of 808s & Heartbreak based on the fact that Kanye has neglected his hop-hop/rap roots. For those short-sighted people, they are missing out on hearing what I believe to be one of the albums of the year.
I've never bought a Kanye album before, even though I have picked up the various singles released from all his albums. So I kinda liked him, but never really committed to him by taking the ultimate plunge. On hearing Love Lockdown, I was completely blown away. The contrast between the sparse, quiet moments of the track and the bits where the explosion of drums kick in and Kanye gets all emotional is pure musically brilliance! And that's the point. It shouldn't matter what genre it is - the quality of the music is the crucial factor. And I think it's fair to say that this is an album of high quality. But you have to be willing to LISTEN with your eyes and ears wide open to truly appreciate it.

Portishead
Portishead's Third has been a long time coming, the result of a lengthy creative topor following 1997's dark, distinctly underrated album Portishead. Importantly, though, they've shaken it. While the core trio of Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow, and Adrian Utley remains, this is quite a different band to Portishead's 90s incarnation: gone is the slo-mo turntable scratching and smoky jazz feel, replaced by heavy, brooding rhythms, vintage-sounding electronics, and spindly guitar. Still present, though, is that sense of emotional fracture and deep gloom. "Silence" opens with a dense drum loop which suddenly falls away to reveal Gibbons' voice, cold but magnificent: "Wounded and afraid, inside my head/Falling through changes". "Nylon Smile", meanwhile, is a fine example of Third's occasional folksy edge, an acoustic song reminiscent of Leonard Cohen that, around its midpoint, lifts off on a propulsive electronic rhythm, Gibbons holding one clear, hard note as synthesisers bubble beneath. At times, it's a harsh and foreboding listen: the electronic drums of "Machine Gun" might put off the listener hoping for smooth dinner party fare. But Third is a brave and forward-thinking return, and one great enough to justify its lengthy gestation. --Louis Pattison
Amazing, 2008-09-09 Look, if you've given this album a poor review then stop, put on a good pair of headphones, and listen to this album properly without skipping tracks. Quite frankly this is the most moving thing I've heard for a long time.

Bopping all around the house!, 2008-10-31 What a triumph - Alesha's dancing has obviously infected her music making. This new number is a great crossover between mambo, big band and rap. It is highly infectious and renders the listener unable to concentrate on anything else apart from this boy with two left feet who does nothing!

John Legend
Strength to Strength, 2008-11-19 This is a fantastic return to form for John Legend. His last two albums have been great but both were very similar. This however, shows a change in tack from John Legend.
Tracks such as "Green Light" and "It's Over" will appeal to newer fans who favour Hip-Hop over R&B and those fans who want more up tempo songs. However, tracks such as "This Time" and "I Love, You Love" will appeal to the more traditional fans and those who like him for his tender and soft R&B songs.
From start to finish it is an outstanding album! My only criticism would be the dominance of Kanye West's influence. Some tracks would have been better without the use of Synthesisers on John Legends voice and some of the cheap 80's electro sounds which Kanye was trying to put in most of the tracks. However, John Legends soulfulness manages to overcome this.
Fantastic.
