A tasty third album from the baebes who brought us Salva Nos in 1997 and Worldes Blysse the following year. Undrentide mixes old poetry with new sounds, relinquishing all aspirations of appealing to historical purists. Indisputable outsiders on the Period Music scene, the Mediaeval Babes keep proving that artists and audiences connect differently these days. The "Baebes" tour their revivalist compositions to S/M clubs and graveyards as well as to Cathedrals, and in its trendy packaging, what is really just another girl choir (though well hyped and well produced), their concept looks set to hit the spot with new audiences. Originators Kathryn Blake and Dorothy Carter lead the way, and with unassailable 90s-chick self-assuredness protest the right to do their take on the Anonymi. With John Cale on board as producer, "moderntide" saxes and synth pads effortlessly philander dulcimers and recorders. The result is a kind of soft paced neo paganism, unobtrusive and atmospheric, tastefully arranged.The singing is pleasant and well instructed, with impressive purity, but not with quite enough guts to carry off the power of seduction inherent in the carefully chosen texts. However, these young maidens maintain a charming informality throughout, as if the recording was made sitting round the Maypole. You do want some of this. --Yngvil V G

I am a big fan of the Mediaeval Baebes and have heard many rumours about this album. When i first heard it i thought it was pretty cool how John Cale has mixed in the modern ambient beats to the enchanting lyrics. The whole album is about spring,positivity and people getting drunk. And if you are wondering what Undrentide means, it is the time of day humans go to sleep and the fairies come out to play. It is a magical album and i recomend it to any person who likes a bit of the unusual.

Wonderful, romantic clarinet, 2001-07-30
This is a lovely double-cd which shows us all the best from Emma Johnson. She really masters the romantic repertoire! I'm most fond of disc two which contains two suites that is hard to find elswhere. The first is the music to the tv-serie 'The Victorian Kitchen Garden', the second is the 'Five Bagatelles' by Finzi. Here is a clarinet that really knows how to crept into your ear and caress both mind an soul. Highly recommendable!

Nice rendition of a classic album, 2008-06-03
I was prepared for the worst but actually it is quite good - a jazzy interpretation of the Dark Side.
Well recorded (Chesky!) and finely executed it is an easy-listening curiousity.
Surprisingly (for a tribute album) it stands well to repeated listenings, a good piece of work in it's own right.
A keeper.

Well Done Guys - this is just the start!!!, 2008-02-27
After hearing about them on Classic FM, I asked Father Christmas to bring me their debut album. I can honestly say I was NOT disappointed. I love both Il Divo and G4 and was very interested to see if they would be in a similar class. Guys, you are up there with Il Divo. You all have fantastic voices and your classical training shines through. I absolutely love "Hallelujah", which I am pleased to see has just been released as a single. The whole album is brilliant. I am looking forward to seeing you live at St James's Church in Piccadilly on 28 February. Keep up the good work.

Heard this on Classic FM in full - its a heart warming version!!!, 2007-12-09
Hey, so happy to be the first to review the White Christmas single by Blake!!
I heard this twice this week on Classic FM, and what can I say...its the best version of this beautiful classic I've ever heard. I haven't heard the whole of the alternative "pop" version of this track which is also on the single, although I was able to watch the band mixing it in the studio, via the Classic FM video dairies for the band. That version seems like a really good one for dancing to at Christmas parties, where as the Classic FM version makes you feel like sitting by the fire with a glass of yummy red wine.
There are 4 singers in Blake, all of them very good looking baritones - the sound they make when they sing together on White Christmas is just superb. There is just so much power and control as they each take separate solo lines too. I was so impressed. I think that even Cosby himself would be proud of this version, although there is room in the christmas world for both! When Classic FM revealed that all these singers were British and that William Hill had given them 3-1 odds on getting as high as Christmas no.2 - I was so amazingly proud. It's so good that they're pure British and flying the flag for british classical music. I can't wait to hear more of them.
