Great looking player including remote & car adapter. Easily changed to Multi region which was my main reason for choosing this one. Video displayed on external TV is good, but internal screen has difficulty displaying text and subtitle captions clearly, the screen is a disappointment so overall just 3 stars.

Sounds good, just avoid the DVD player, 2008-11-15
Since buying the 503 I've been pretty impressed. I bought the sound system to try and get the most out of my PS3 and although there's no HDMI input there is an optical slot so the loss in quality isn't really noticable.
Playing Call of Duty through the speakers is cracking...hearing people coming up behind you from the rear speakers is exactly why i bought the system in the first place. It's slightly annoying having to funnel everything through the DVD player, but there is a special Aux input mode so that it doesnt sap up too much electricity.
The only failing with the system is the DVD player, which in truth is pretty poor. DVD skipping seems to be a problem regardless of the DVD playing. Also it's very slow when initially reading the DVD so I dont even use it as a DVD player any more.
Setting up the sound on the speakers is relatively straight forward, if not a little fiddley. Something perhaps a bit more automated like you find on rival models would be a good addition though.
Overall though its a great sound system.... If you're looking for soemthing to hook up to a console then go for it, but if you're looking for a DVD upscaler I'd cut your losses and go elsewhere!

Fantastic DVD Writer, Reader, LightScribe & SO Small, 2008-09-23
This is truly one of the most portable products on the market, for playing DVDs, writing DVDs and using LightScribe technology to create fancy labels for your discs. I had my first experience with FreeCom years ago, when I purchased an external hard drive, so when it came to choosing an external DVD writer for my iBook, which had been region locked, FreeCom caught my eye with an alternative product. It introduced me to their LightScribe technology, and although wasn't stated as Mac compatible, worked fine. However, portability was an issue - not so with this drive, which was provided to me through Vine to test.
About as thick as two iPods, if that, and just a bit bigger than the dimensions of a CD jewel case in width and length, this drive is truly portable. It plays CDs and DVDs just fine, plugged directly into a laptop (I used a MacBook and iMac), but does work better plugged into the mains with full power. A green light on the front shows you when the drive is working, and it follows the internal laptop drive opening structure, with a push button to pull the tray out and push it back in.
CD and DVD burning speeds are a bit slower than the norm for external DVD and CD drives, going at a maximum of 8x, but because of the sheer portability, this is hardly a criticism, and chances are you won't be using it for loads of burning anyway if you're on the go. LightScribe technology is in built, meaning if you use specific LightScribe discs - 5 free ones from Philips are included - you can design and print images onto the disc, using the laser to 'burn' the image onto the top of the disc. This works fabulously, as you'd expect from a FreeCom device, and this package also includes software for both Mac and PC to design the images. LightScribe burning comes with three settings, and is as fast (or as slow) as is LightScribe standard (despite the speed, the result is well worth it and looks much more professional than handwriting the contents of the disc with pens!).
I really cannot emphasise how strongly I recommend this drive if you're in the market for a portable DVD drive - not only does it do the essentials, it is extremely well designed, robust, stylish and comes with extras, such as LightScribe. A completely worthwhile purchase!

Highly recommended player, 2008-03-30
I sold my xbox 360 HD player as soon as i heard that HD had lost the format war, no big deal for me as i only had a couple of HD films anyway, i now needed a decent player to hook up to my 40" Bravia, i could have gone the whole hog and gone for a blu-ray player, but i dont really watch enough DVD's to warrant the cost, so went for, in my opinion, the next best thing, an upscaling DVD player, i have to say, the picture quality via HDMI is EXCELLENT, after trying a few DVD's i was amazed at how good the picture was that this player puts out, if like me, your not quite ready to jump on the Blu-ray band wagon, you cant go far wrong with this player for £70.00

Does just about everything you could expect. Digital TV reception okay with my own indoor aerial (Film 4 and BBC 3 a bit dodgy). There is supposed to be a wake up timer (also used for the recording function) but there doesn't seem to be a standby function so you can only power off using the mains switch! Leave it on and it will initiate recording at the set time. Unit can't be used as a Freeview box because the A/V output only works for DVD. Plugging in the mains adapter doesn't disable the battery so it will start charging as soon as the the power switch is turned off - not good for battery life.

I would double check if your VHS player has the right connections as shown before purchase. Not the thing to go for if you want to copy your VHS tapes, that you have recorded from the telly for example, onto DVDs via the USB port on a computer to save space. May be posssibly ideally suited to make a DVD from a camcorder movie with a computer DVD burning drive. I think in the first instance it is best to go for a DVDR all in one machine and pay the extra money and then there are no possible problem connections involved and the quality will be as good as the original VHS tape.
