OK it may be the case i've been very lucky and got one that works better than the other people reviewing this item. I have noticed the slow response time when using the freeview, which is bad, but doesn't make the device unusable.

I think if you will use this for freeview, you will experience problems, however using this with sky etc, this should be fine. In the areas that matter like picture quality and sound, i cannot fault this drive and the functionality is extensive.

I may be lynched for this, but i would recommend this, but primarily if you will be using with sky. Otherwise, be prepared for a few technical issues. That being said, i do know that you can update the firmware by downloading updated software from the samsung website and installing this via USB or DVD, perhaps this will resolve any issues with the freeview.

Not Really Compatible With Samsung HD TV, 2008-12-02
Bought this as we have a Samsung HD TV thinking the two would be compatible. WRONG!! Had terrible time getting the thing set up and using the 'Anynet' system to tie up Samsung products was a nightmare. Now I'm no idiot but it took hours to get the configuration right. Even now it takes dozens of key presses to record or playback a DVD. HDMI is not like SCART. With SCART when you switch on a device it is immediatley connected to your TV. HDMI is different. You have to keep clicking the remote to select the device. When you finish with the DVD you just have a blank screen. You have to select the TV now. Switching back and forwards is a pain. Also the TV and DVD remotes look the same but the buttons that perform the same function have different names. Very confusing. I would send it back but our other older but brilliant DVD recorder has now started to flicker on playback so as I have invested so much time in this product I will probably keep it. Look elsewhere is my recommendation. You have been warned. PS the manual is the usual pigeon english.

When I opened the box, I really liked the color and design of the cabinet, which pink looks much more classic than other pink products I saw in Woolworths and Toys R US. Some of the pink colors such as TVs and Audios I saw in Woolwoths do not look very nice to me so I wondered how it would compare against the others and I was so impressed with color and design of the cabinet case. The player also does the job to my full satisfaction, clear picture image, good stereo sound from the case and long enough battery life time etc. The carry case is very handy and a bonus at the value. Region-free is set from the beginning so I do not have to hassle to get region free code and input etc. Lovely player !

OK, so the major drawback is that this is a profile 1.0 player but the sheer quality of the picture makes up for that. Vibrant colours and three dimensional pictures sealed it for me. If you're not bothered about the picture in picture extras that profile 1.1 provides, this is an excellent choice.

Good basic dvd recorded with great memory, 2008-01-31
This is my first dvd recorder with hard drive, the memory is great but it did seem a bit complicated to get started had a couple of deleted films before i mastered it. It is a bit quirky once you have recorded a film you need to turn the machine off and on again before you can edit the film putting the name on the recording. The machine is a bit slow but all in all i have rated it a 4 because it is alot less expensive that other machines out there and i think it is good value. I wanted to store films on it i have sky+ so use that for live recording so it is idea for what i wanted.

I've never bought any philips products before, i myself am a sony freak however, i saw this deal (£80) and couldnt believe my eyes. i was after a divx capable home theater system; and thats not all you get with this little beauty. the sound quality is fantastic and the picture is excellent too. i download alot of tv and films and i can now just chuck them on my 4gb usb stick and watch them straight through the usb. i then later found that so long as the disk you use is formatted in a fat32 file system the unit will pick it up. so i bought a 120gb 2.5 inch usb powered external hard drive and formatted it to fat32. I now have loads of films and tv series striaght to hand. Couldn't want any more from such a great spec machine. Oh and the fact it is multi region is just a bonus!!

Maybe my heading wasn't fair, but that's been my experience so far. At least it's cheap, and hey - we're all so rich now we can just throw these things away and get another one if they don't work. That seems to be the attitude of electronics manufacturers these days. There's no point in buying an expensive dvd player because, no matter the price, it's just your luck if it works at all, or packs up in a few weeks or months. More fool us for continuing to give them money. Even the cheapest 2nd hand vhs player I ever had lasted years and never got stuck - it's nice to be able to navigate disks as quick as dvd enables, and the picture quality is better, but the quality control is a complete p-take.

Anyway, maybe you'll be lucky with your purchase of this device, maybe not. Mine showed the quick start menu, assured me that it was set up, then, when I inserted a disk, showed 'loading' for about 2 minutes, then showed ' this disk cannot be played'. It did this with old, new, region 1, 2 and 4 disks. Maybe it only plays region 0 disks - very useful.

So, obviously, I can't tell you if there are instances of this model which work at all, and if they are genuinely multi-region straight from the box. I have to say that I got the dvp ns36 model, which worked a dream and was multi-region straight from the box. I liked it so much I wanted another one, but there aren't any more on Amazon, so I got this because it was advertised as the replacements. So, you guessed it - I'm trying to get my money back.

Bought one of these as TV for a bedroom. TV and DVD part work fine but Freeview doesn't appear to load in any stations when doing a search. It is probably an older version that doesn't work since they upgraded. Beware - you might need to buy a separate Freeview box!
