The best headphones I have ever used, 2007-12-24
The sound quality is great for the price in fact much better than some more expensive headphones I have used in the past. Best of all, there is no problem with buds popping out of your ears or not fitting properly. The mould seems to fit a variety of ear shapes and sizes. Mine have been used on four people all of whom didn't want to give them back to me.

I have been using these since August 2006 without problem. They have survived a serious case of tangled and yanked wires, being slept on, being trodden on and other forms of abusive. Despite this, no loss of sound quality.

If anything happens to these, I will buy exactly the same model again without hesitation. Highly recommended.

Firstly, I'm no audiophile but I know that I like an balance of bass and treble. In the past, I've always been disappointed by earphones as they usually failed to deliver the bass end.

I bought these with confidence as a) I have bought Sennheiser before, and b) have used the earbud style earphones from other manufacturers before. These did not disappoint at all.

They come with 3 bud sizes - I simply had to swap the fitted medium pair for the small from experience and they fit superbly. Whilst I'm not going to use these for running, I'm certain I'd have no problems with them.

I also like the assymetric lead - provided you can remember which is left and which is right, you will never be doubting whether you have inadvertently put the left bud in the right ear and vicki versa.

For the reviewers who post they don't fit, one size doesn't fit all. The manufacturer tries to accommodate all by providing the 3 bud sizes but alas, there will be disappointment for the few. If your's don't fit, drop me an email and I'll take them off for hands for you

In my view, these beat the standard iPod supplied earphones hands down - my experience of those supplied are that they are uncomfortable, have a tendency to fall out, distort easily, poor base reproduction, poor volume and noise leakage both ways. Bin those if you have the same experience as me and swap for the Sennheiser CX300s.

I'm very happy with the PXC300 headphones and have found them very effective at what they are primarily designed to do, canceling out the background noise of wind and engine roar on aeroplanes.

With the noise cancellation activated the sound quality is very good. Aeroplane background noise was virtually but not entirely eliminated to a very comfortable level. There is quite evidently some equalisation of the sound signal being done by the noise cancellation unit when powered up. With the NC unit switched off the sound quality is disappointingly poor, the headphones sounding dull and muffled. This makes the PXC300 less of a multi purpose set of lightweight headphones suitable for a variety of uses, something hindered further by the NC unit not being detactchable.

I found the battery life to be excellent. The supplied pair of AAA batteries outlasting the duration of a round trip from the UK to New Zealand. In the region of 24 hours total use. That's not constant use by the way.

I personally found the comfort levels to be good too. Only after having had the 'phones on for a few hours did I feel the need to take them off for a minute and give my ears a massaging rub.

Folding the headphones and putting them away (in the very nice carry pouch) even after a little practice remains a fiddle. One arm must be folded before the other for success and the marking on the headphones indicating which must be folded first is not easy to see. The fact the NC unit is not detachable makes packing away just that little more fiddley too. I saw no option other than to qite tightly coil the cable up around it.

For currently less than £80 I can find little to find serious fault with the Sennheiser PXC300's. A detachable noise cancellation unit and better unpowered sound quality would be nice. Perhaps there are better performing noise cancellation headphones on the market, we often hear Bose mentioned here, I've never tried them myself but if that standard setting benchmark performance is what you expect, get your hand in your pocket and pay for it.

Just got a pair of these for my wife to use on her Electric Piano and I have to say that are excellent. The sound quality is superb, with great frequency range and definition. I have also tried them on the Electric Guitar and they are just as impressive.

The Sound is well contained with in the headphone and no leakage of sound at all. They are comfortable and light so I have no concerns of them getting uncomfortable with prolonged use. I will try them on my ipod later, but I am sure they will impress there as well.

If you want something for all round use then don't look any further as these will meet all your audio requirements.

These 'phones throw out an amazing amount of bass, so much so that in order to get Rock; G n' R, Metallica, House of Pain to the level I like it, I had to change the EQ on my iPod Classic to the Piano setting!?!

But for Dance music and Electronica; Faithless, Fear Factory, Paul Oakenfold they just keep on pushing like nothing I've heard. The sound from these headphones is so pure, you just have to switch to some Bob Dylan or Fleetwood Mac to be sure. Being the owner of some very expensive hi-fi, if I knew all it would take to get this kind of sound was an iPod and these headphones I would have switched a long time ago.

They are extremely comfortable too. I had them on for around 5 hours at the time of writing this and at times I couldn't even feel I was wearing them. I've always been a Sennheiser fan and this latest purchase just confirms my belief in their technologies.

The only gripe I have, and its a bit of a non-complaint really is the cord is very long. I plan on using them with an iPod for the most part but they are no doubt designed for sitting down at home or DJs who need a lot of movement. But, I believe a shorter cord is available so as I say, it really isn't a problem.

Do yourself a favour, you won't look back.

Please excuse me if this comes across as a joint review for these earphones and the ipod nano 3G, but I did buy them specifically for that player!

SOUND:

I bought these wanting more bass and clarity from my tunes on the nano (which doesn't do bass very well), and I was not disappointed; the sound is incredibly crisp and clear, at all levels, but the bass in particular is exactly what I was looking for, really meaty without sounding silly. Also, the earphone volume is pleasingly high. When I first got the nano I had to increase the default volume on all my tracks on itunes because the unit volume was so feeble, but once I started using these earphones I had to turn it all back down again! So, all in all, I cannot fault the sound from these earphones.

OTHER FEATURES:

Sennheiser says these have a special kind of lead which transmits less sound vibration than the normal sort (like when the cord is brushing over your coat or something), and also actually increase the battery life of your player because it's so efficient. Now, these are the sort of things that are hard to judge. In the case of the vibration noise, I've never noticed a problem with previous earphones, so I'll reserve judgement. In the case of the battery life, I'm inclined to say that Sennheiser is telling the truth. Previously a full charge on the nano would be down to about half after a normal day's use for me (my commute to and from work), but now I'm finding it's only down by about 1/5, and I haven't changed my listening habits at all. I'm very pleased with this, as it means I no longer need to recharge the player every single day, which was annoying me. An unexpected bonus.

ACCESSORIES:

The accessories that come with these headphones are good: a nicely proportioned extension cord, exactly the right kind of length; three sizes of the usual rubber ear canal buds; a smart little purse-like storage pouch (which happens to be exactly the right size for an ipod nano 3G); a rubber holder thing that you stick the 'phones into to protect them.

That last item is particularly useful. I always think tiny little earphones like these must be fragile, so it's good to have something to store them in. My only qualm is that this thing is far bigger and heavier than it needs to be, with only half of it holding the ear buds, the rest just being a big flap of rubber with the logo on it. And although it's clearly designed to clip onto the earphone lead it's actually far too heavy for this to be practical, therefore you have to keep it in your pocket, where it will obviously get lost. I'm seriously considering butchering mine, maybe cutting it clean in half, but I don't think this will look very nice.

DESIGN:

Talking of looks, these earphones are absolutely beautiful, really well designed. Frankly, they look cool. All the different colours available are lovely too, particularly the blue and the red. I chose the red earphones because, well, they looked nicest, and (shame on me) they happened to go really well with the scarf I was wearing that day!

One little thing I did notice about these earphones which I wasn't keen on was that they seem to whistle when it's windy, something which can be heard over the music. I've only noticed this a couple of times, and it might not be a problem unless it's particularly windy, but it did irritate me slighty (I never had this problem with my sony 'phones).

Anyway, on balance I give these a good five stars. Apart from just a couple of very, very minor flaws (only one of which is with the product itself), They're outstanding; great sound, great design, great value.

After reading the reviews i have to admit to being a little disappointed. While the bass of these headphones is pretty good, the midrange is really harsh, and even unpleasant at high volumes. It's not hi fi exactly. I have compared these to a pair of admittedly more expensive stantons, and also my standard sony mobile phone earpiece, and both the latter are more musical. Perhaps a breaking in period is needed but can't honestly imagine them changing enough to be considered good.
But otherwise they're nice to look at, convenient, and reasonable value if you pick them up cheap.
