Samsung GalaxyS 8GB Android 21 1GHz 4 INCH SuperAMOLED display 800 x 480 pixels WVGA 5Mp Camera SGHI9000BLK8 Phones Mobile Phones
Android, Apple, Android, Apple...?, 2010-08-10 For a good while now the iPhone has been (in many peoples eyes) the smart-phone to have, for its simplicity, speed, huge range of apps and solid design people have been splashing out ridiculous money to own an iPhone (myself included). After a while we learned that it is pretty restricted and that jail breaking is frowned upon (rather than encouraged like palms Dev mode and androids 3rd party apps) and the whole product is stupidly over priced for what you get.
This is where Samsung have seen a whole in the market and created a magnificent smart-phone, the Samsung Galaxy S i9000.
OK, it isn't 'cheap' by any means, and it isn't quite as well built as some may have hoped but it is far cheaper than the iPhone 4 and it has many features that are far more impressive. You can pick one up for around £300 in excellent condition and for what you get it isn't really that over priced.
The first thing you notice is the super AMOLED screen, I can't express just how bright and crisp it actually is. I read many reviews before buying my i9000 and they all boasted on how amazing the screen is, I was skeptical I must admit. Then i turned it on and I was blown away. The colours are so beautifully vibrant, everything is crystal clear, and the wallpapers that come with the phone look absolutely stunning. Even with the Brightness turned right down it is still super bright and is even very visible in bright sun lit areas. It is also very scratch resistant and seems to stay pretty clean without having to wipe it all day, possibly an oleophobic coating of some sort.
The HD camera takes a lovely photo and the 720p video recording is much much better than I anticipated, however the lack of flash is well... how can I say it... Stupid! I am utterly confused as to why Samsung have left this feature out, It would be near a perfect phone if they had just added a flash but for some bizarre reason they decided to leave it out. OK digital cameras are pretty cheap for a half decent one and the camera is just an extra feature to the phone but it would have still been the icing on the cake if they had put on the flash.
The phone in general looks very nice too, it is clearly influenced in design by the iPhone but in my opinion it looks even nicer and feels much comfier in my hand.
It has plenty of memory, 8GB or 16GB with an expandable slot inside the phone which will take up to an extra 32GB of memory which should be enough for anybody.
The phone is nicely customizable as are most phones. You can easily change the wallpaper, which spreads out over 7 homepages that can be filled with widgets of your choice and shortcuts to your applications, but be warned if you have plenty of widgets they may slow things down a tad and really drain your battery because they keep refreshing. There is a way past this however, simply change the settings for each widget so they refresh manually/never. This will save hours of battery life. Many people are complaining that the battery life is poor however I disagree. I just simply turned the screen brightness to half and turned off background data and auto-sync and it has gone from lasting one day of good usage to 3 days before it needs a full charge. Also download a free task killer from the android market and this will close all applications that have been left open which will also save plenty of battery life and keep your phone running at maximum speed.
The phone overall is an excellent smart-phone. I was stuck between the Galaxy S and the HTC desire (2 very similar top of the range phones with very minor differences) and after testing the 2 phones the 4inch HD super AMOLED screen, the HD camera and the appearance of the phone itself won me over, and I am very happy with my decision. I'm giving the phone 5 out of 5 because i think it truly deserves it. The lack of flash is still crazy and it should have been added but I can't deduct a star just for that one reason. The android store is still a little limited (70,000+ apps is still plenty to choose from, but the selection isn't as impressive as apples) but that is something that will grow over time.
Great phone, the definite underdog of the smart-phone market.

- 19" HD Ready LCD Screen
- Connect Share Movie
- 1366 x 768 Resoultion
- Freeview Tuner
- 348mm x 461.3mm x 180.2mm
Worth the money, 2010-08-12 When trawling through numerous reviews (on small lcd's this time) we all take on board the comments, both positve and negative. I did so with this model. Not many reviews to compare to, unlike earlier LE19B450 model which scored well.
Product arrived faster then I expected via super saver. Package was totally unmarked, and inside was well protected. Setup is really too simple - and it works! No missed packets (channels)and default settings are fine for most. Remote control is an upgraded version to previous model and albeit large, it seems well built too.
The issue of sound! Some earlier comments refer to the tinny or box like sound. Now forgive me, but I am not financially blessed enough afford to live in a Castle, converted Methodist Church or renovated Ballroom - so for me the sound output of the downfiring speakers was perfectly sufficient for the tv's intended use, a bedroom or kitchen. You will find that the menu provided numerous settings for tweaking. Failing that - buy a set of decent Logitech speakers or something.
There are plenty of inputs to the rear. On set control buttons are "touch buttons" which may not be physically obvious at casual glance. Stand setup was not hard to work out. There is a rather large button to the rear of the stand, press it and fold forwards. Simple. Mine folded with no resistance at all.
So, if this model is on your shortlist - be tempted to pop it into your basket.

Perfect toy for a boy! Welcome to the 22nd century., 2010-08-10 I absolutely love my new blu ray player, I think it's perfect.
And price wise it's an incredible bargain. 6 blu ray titles cost around £50-60, so the actual price of the player is about £50-60.
What I love the most about this player is the fact that it can read all types of files on my external hard drive, it plays DivX and MKV, so you can watch all your home videos (through USB).
The remote control is light and very responsive and the main 3 buttons glow in the dark so you can use them in complete darkness, how cool is that? I've got loads of remote controls in my flat (Sony, Philips,Toshiba, JVC), but Samsung's is the best and the most responsive (very fast).
There are no buttons on the fron panel of the unit, instead Samsung provides touch sensitive panel simalr to touch screen on mobiles, which is very easy and enoyable way to operate the player. (welcome to the 22nd century).
Another thing that I love about this player is that it greets you with a very pleasant chiming sound, which reminds of ringtones and chimes on my old and very expensive Nokia 8800,
Overall, I'm over the moon with this player. And as about the most important things - picture and sound, I think it depends on the type of TV that you have, Every movie I played so far looked stunning on my Toshiba HD 1080, 42' LCD TV. Quality of the sound depends on the sound level of a DVD/movie, so keep this in mind and don't blame the player.

Fab DVD player - make it multi-region too..., 2010-08-07 Just bought this DVD player and I love it, excellent upscaling and picture quality and looks very sleek next to my Samsung TV. Admittedly the remote is a bit small but the TV remote works with it so it's not really a big issue. I have found a region hack that definitely works (just used it myself) try this:
Make sure there is no disc in the player.
Turn on the player (you can use remote control or front panel, it doesn't matter)
Wait for "No Disc" message to appear on the TV screen.
Press the Repeat button on remote (plain, not A-B).
Press the correct sequence of buttons of remote according to the original region code of your player (it's on the sticker on the back panel of the player).
FF = fast forward, FR = fast rewind.
Region 2 players: FF, FR, FF, UP, DOWN
Region 3 players: FF, PLAY, FR, UP, LEFT
Region 4 players: FR, PLAY, DOWN, DOWN, RIGHT
Region 5 players: FF, UP, DOWN, STOP, RIGHT
Region 6 players: LEFT, RIGHT, RIGHT, PLAY, LEFT
If you pressed the correct sequence, a small white number 0 will appear somewhere on the top right of the screen. The white number 0 of the same font and size as the "No Disc" message, so don't confuse with the red "not allowed" sign that would appear when you press a function that's not available.
Turn the player off and on again, then you can pop in a DVD of any region and watch immediately.
Have fun!
