    the handbag radio, 2008-12-29
I bought one of these radios for the missus, because she liked the retro style. As she unwrapped it my 3 yr old said 'oh look, it's a handbag radio' which made me chuckle.
I thought as it was DAB and made by Roberts, the sound quality would be good. It isn't, it's very disappointing. The sound is mono and very dull sounding and there is no way to adjust it. Bit of a let down really

the Robi definately worth it, 2008-09-22 bouhgt one from argos today very good....my robi is paired with my ipod video it was no trouble setting up and worked as the manual said it would.
the features ,,,DAB..FM..REMOTE ,,worked as xpected and it's shortcomings are like any other device of the same type..reception will depend on the signal strength in your area...dab will crackle a bit if you are on the move and fm reception is par with most fm receivers ..the remote works quiet well but don't xpect to b able to xplore all the sub menus on your ipod...yes it seemed a bit xpensive but dab devices generally are!!apparently it's not compatible with the latest ipods so if you have a classic or the latest nanos check first!!

Very good radio , 2008-10-22 Not being a real music or radio expert, I find this an excellent radio which to my "uneducated" ear sounds great.
The comprehensive instruction booklet takes some study as the radio has 3 different modes and a host of functions but on balance its generally easy to understand.
I bought the silver one as it was the only one available when I made my purchase but looking at the black one now available I think I would have preferred it.
If Roberts Radio is good enough for The Queen then its good enough for me !!

Very nice little radio., 2007-10-18 I am puzzled: unit is stated to be R9995, but picture and details are identical to that for R995, (also on Amazon)?
See my review for the R995, written after having had the radio for much longer, similar and a little more critical.
____________
Original review of "R9995":-
What the details don't seem to tell you that this is about 50 x 90 x 16 mm and weighs about 62 grams. (Laugh at the 5KG boxed product weight in Amazon's details!) Good sound. Very easy to use, even in the dark (except perhaps for tuning). Having presets is wonderful. Simple and logical display, although I would have liked a signal-strength indicator.
The phone cable acts as aerial. We are in an area of moderate reception, and occasionally there is a need to position the receiver in a good place relative to your head to avoid hiss or break-up.
Maybe I am only telling you something about the shape of my ears, but these are the first in-ear phones I have ever had that are comfortable (was expecting to use my larger headphones, but don't have to). Perhaps oddly for a "Sports" radio, phones have a 40 mm rod to point downwards keep them located in the ear rather than a curled piece to wrap around the earlobe - fine for me but I wonder if they would fall out in joggy activities!
Strange feature: by default, unit switches down automatially after 90 mins. This can be disabled, but only by holding the power button for five seconds EVERY TIME you turn it on (although it remembers just about every other setting). Now how often are you likely to leave on a radio that only works through phones?
There is a sort of tone control called "Deep Bass Boost". Maybe my ears are wearing out or I listen to the worng kind of music, but I can barely detect its effect!
I actually followed the link on Amazon and bought this from HomeVision - a tad cheaper and much lower postage. A delay due to supply problems was partially compensated for by good customer service keeping me informed of progress.

Roberts sound 43 Cd/Dab/fm digital sound system with ipod dock, 2008-10-29 I would highly recommend this music system. The sound is excellent and has a warm quality. Chose this over the Bose ipod dock as it has fm/dab radio (which is also fab quality) and cd. It is definitely value for money Have never used my ipod so much!

Ecologic 1, 2009-01-04 I needed a small DAB radio with good reception and output and this is just what I've got. It provides excellent coverage with virtually no aerial extension where we live in Somerset and has performed equally well on a caravan site in south Devon. Simple to use and does most of the hard work for you. I like the idea of using rechargeable batteries and having them recharged, in situ, by just using the mains transformer from time to time. What would I have liked - an alarm function, but I knew it didn't have it, so this is just me being greedy. For anyone lookling for a small, portable DAB radio with great performance, look no further.Roberts Ecologic 1 DAB/FM RDS Radio with built-in AA charger

Focus on battery power and comparing this to my first DAB radio., 2008-07-15 I was after a DAB radio with long battery life, with punchy sound and easy to use. Roberts claim a wopping 150 hours using six D size alkaline batteries. "Which" report found 81 hours when they tested it. So it probably lies somewhere between the two figures, depending on sound volume, and quality of batteries used. This is streets ahead of any other DAB radio presently on the market.
The first DAB radio I bought several years ago was the first edition of the Pure Elan, bought for the same reason as the Roberts ie battery life. At the time, other radios gave 5-10 Hours battery life, whereas Pure claimed 30 Hours with the Elan using 6 of the smaller C type batteries. I found using Duracell + batteries this was correct, however the sound was very, disappointing, muffled, muddy with no treble.
So with the RD-21, Roberts have extended the battery life ( although using the larger D type batteries )by about 3 or 4 times that of the Pure Elan. So is there a catch ?
Absoultely not !!! Obviously technology has moved on. Roberts will be using chips that consume far less power than the earlier Pure Elan. But soundwise, these 2 radios are like chalk and cheese. The 21 has separate Bass and Treble controls which give great tonal adjustment. Speach sounds suberb, great for radio 4 and 7. For music output it obviously can't compete with the bass output from a subwoffer, but in a small room gives excellent presence and balance, and the opportunity to subdue the midrange by wacking up both bass and treble ( the way I like it ! ). Very impressive indeed, for the size of radio.
Simplicity itself to setup and use, with a large display on the top, excellent battery life, fantastic sound, and a radio you can pick up and take into the bathroom, or the garden shed, without having to change the batteries every fortnight.
PS It was not my intention to make a generalised comparison between the sound qualiy of Pure radios and Roberts radios, only the 2 specific models mentioned. I have owned and used the Pure Evoke 3 virtually every day for the past 2 years, and is in my opinion the best DAB radio sofar built.

Good Looking & Good Sounding, 2008-08-07 Very well made, nicely finished & quite compact, this CD DAB table-top combination looks & sounds the business.
DAB reception is excellent with the attached unexpanded aerial as is FM. The unit quickly finds all the major stations & locks into the signals very well.
The sound from the radio (DAB & FM) is very good; warm & full sounding with voices being easy to follow.
Sound from the CD is OK but suffers a little in the way of timing & the fact the MP23 has a tendency to `over-cook' the base which can't be turned down. The only really effective equalizer pre-set (Rock) simply makes the music - including the base - go louder.
Volume is very good though, with the ability to go quite loud without distorting the music & the stereo effect is good with speakers at either end of the unit.
The remote is small & compact but don't loose it as most of the MP23's functionality is controlled via it!
Three small gripes: the headphone socket is at the back of the unit when it should be at the front or side for easy access (Roberts should know that by now!)
The blue light on the display is quite bright & can't be turned off or even dimmed. This would be a problem if used in a bedroom.
Other minor gripe? The colour or rather lack of choice. Most people will use this in their bedroom or kitchen & the piano black finish won't suit everyone. My wife, for example, wanted a wood finish to match our kitchen cabinets.
All in all a very good system; it can't replace my mid price ROKSAN Candy amp & CD player but it costs about 1/10 of them if you include decent speakers.
For everyday listening the Roberts MP23 is an excellent compromise between size, cost & sound quality.
Recommended.
