Absolutely brilliant, don't hesitate!, 2008-04-05
We all know PURE pretty much invented the portable DAB radio and reviewers are never slow to point out that PURE sets tend to sound much better than the competition. This is equally true of the new PURE Elan RV40 which is truly one of the best I've heard - and it looks more like a conventional radio too (sleek dark grey case) rather than those strange wood and plastic boxes that PURE tend to churn out - and which I don't like at all. The controls are not exactly intuitive, but with a bit of thought and practise (read the manual first!) they soon become second nature. The sound is really clean and crisp and surprisingly full - and you can crank it up pretty loud too, unlike many other "tinny"-sounding portables. I have had absolutely NO problems whatsoever with DAB sound even though the reception is supposed to be patchy in my neck of the woods. FM reception is first class too and the pause/rewind of live radio is a neat and useful feature. Add to that the inclusion of a snooze button, and you have a brilliant sounding and well-equipped portable radio. I am super-fussy about gadgets like these, but this is absolutely wonderful and I recommend it without hesitation. I also managed to find a dealer on Amazon selling it at approximately £30 less than John Lewis!!!

Bought to replace a Sonus going to another family member, this really has turned out to be a significant improvement in terms of the display (cool green with smooth, flowing graphics and auto dimming)that it was a worthy replacement for that alone.

Natural sounds are really rather addictive, especially with the additional stereo speaker attached (although my 'XT' speaker jack requires a little fiddling to work correctly) and the menu is getting longer!

Still a 5 star product though from Pure and would recommend it.

Brilliant even in our reception blackspot!, 2008-12-01
I read all the reviews before deciding on this DAB radio for my husband's birthday. Because we live in a reception blackspot which affects mobile phones and TV reception, I was half expecting it not to be able to pick anything up but my husband has been enthusing about the sound quality and number of channels he can receive. Availability of a rechargeable battery pack, which I also bought, was the deciding factor for me as other reviews suggest this type of radio eats batteries so it seemed like a worthwhile investment. However, Hubby is happy with using it on mains power until I get round to reading the instruction booklet. He managed without but tells me there is a clock and presets for me to set up too.

Poor display, 2008-12-29
This is my first DAB radio, and I'm impressed by the clear sound. However, the display is very poor. It certainly isn't anything like the image on the product packaging as shown above (and I'm amazed that PURE can get away with this). Even at its dimmest setting, it still lights up the whole room. Also, it is difficult to view from many angles, but I guess all backlit LCD displays are like this.

Regret not buying this sooner!!!!, 2008-01-20
I think just about everything has been written about what this radio is capable of. My advice is buy it, shop around for the best price obviously, presently around £160. For goodness sake don't worry about DAB + compatibility ( its a few years away ) Just buy it and enjoy the truely amazing sound this produces. I guarantee you will fall in love with this remarkable piece of technology.
PS I was thinking of writing 4 or 5 paragraphs of pro and cons, but its all been done. I'm a DAB freek ! Heard and played around with loads of kit including radios in the Pure range, but presently this is overall the best DAB you can buy.

PURE VL-61120 i-10 Powered iPod Dock with Remote Control

I bought this as a compromise after getting a 120gb Ipod Classic for Xmas. As the intention was to connect my Ipod to my hi-fi I wanted the Denon Docking Station but the retailer did not have one in stock but recommended the Pure version as not only superior but less than half the price. Now I cannot say if it is superior but less that half the price I can confirm. This is a lovely bit of kit and unlike the Denon it comes with a remote so you do not put any stress on the Ipod connection whilst it is in the docking station. The only accessory I had to but was the cable to connect to my amplifier. Now I am cooking on gas (as they say) and am a very happy bunny.

It's simple to use and the Aux-input lets me use it as a speaker for my iPod too.

Generally a good clock radio. Nice interface and well-built. The sound quality is good enough, though as other reviewers have said its not amazing.

Two minor issues:

1. The iPod interface is disappointing. You can set the iPod to wake you up, but can't choose which playlist etc it will start on from the radio - it will just start from the last thing it was playing.

2. You can't choose radio stations from the presets from the remote control. This makes the whole preset feature a bit useless.

i use this dab radio every day on a building site. Its quite simply worth every penny. The sounds brilliant even when its turned up. Battery life lasts between 12-15 hours but i do charge it up every night. I plug my mp3 into it which also sounds good even though its mono. The bottom line is i have saved loads of money by not having to buy batteries and it does what pure say. By the way i have had my pure digital radio for about a year and a half. TOP MARKS.
