all around impressive, 2008-04-11 i just got this recorder and find it superb. the device is tiny, light and "dupont lighter"-stylish. i particularly like the metal buttons, much more tactile that plastic one - i know it is a small thing. I like the five-line display which provides a lot of information compared to another device i used.
now for the great part, the integrated micros are great, and the stereo effect is really a bonus. This is especially the case if you later listen with earphones.
the time elapsed versus the length of the file are displayed clearly and legibly.
i did invest in a little carry case and i am glad i did because that way i can throw the recorder into a bag and still keep it pristine.
i find the 'hold' button more positive and better protected. this is important because it saves you battery life.
i really like the indexing facility. if you use the device to learn language where you need to reiterate the same sentence again it is really effective. you mark the begining and jump back with the arrow button - right to the correct location every time in one click. nice!
the things i am not a big fan of are the recording format which seems to be wma only. having said that it plays straight on windows media on my pc so no problem. the other aspect is the five folders on the device are a bit naff - unless it was possible to rename them and to move the file across as required. small stuff really.

Ultra-compact xD card with panorama function You will appreciate the convenience of the new 1GB xD-Picture Card. This ultra-compact card allows you to capture much more and in higher resolution before the images must be downloaded or the card changed. Please note: this xD Picture Card may not be suitable for earlier models of Olympus Digital Cameras. Please check the specifications for your camera.
Works with Olympus mju 600, 2006-09-14 I purchased this with my Olympus mju 600, the only problem I had was trying to insert the card the wrong way!!
Once it went in and I switched the camera on there were no problems whatsoever.
However, as many have said before me check your manual first / go to your manufacturers website or alternatively check the technical data in the camera information.

Excellent Product!, 2008-11-14 Ordered the Olympus VN3100-PC recorder a week ago, and just got it today.
It works tremendously well, and the software supplied was installed on my Vista laptop in less than 2 minutes.
I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for something lightweight, handy, USB connectivity, with long lasting battery life and incredible memory space(5hrs plus of XHQ recording).
One thing to note though, the instruction manual made no mention of how to switch off the recorder. I assume its similar to other recorders, which is to put the hold button on, and after 2 secs, the screen goes blank (should be off right?). But personally, I remove the batteries when am not using them just to be sure.

Olympus
- 256MB internal memory
- 4 recording modes
- 144 hrs. recording time
- Voice activation
- Timer record
Up and running in less than 10 mins, 2008-09-16 Received this 10 mins ago - set up in a minute (just time and date), software loaded without hitch (on Vista 32-bit using supplied disk).
All in all, very happy. Compact, lightweight, simple to operate. Quality of recordings seems fine. Transferred files to PC without fuss - WAV format - converted to mp3 with Audacity in seconds.
What I thought might be a headache to source proved to be simple and surprisingly inexpensive. Thanks to all that wrote reviews before me which helped me decide.

Fantastic camera for snorkeling, 2008-10-31 Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R36O5TUZKHDLOE Video footage taken in Sharm El Sheikh using the Olympus 1030 SW camera and an M+ XD picture card which lets you take videos for more than 10 seconds in VGA mode. The 2GB card I have allowed 18mins of continuous video. I was diving around 7 meters with no problems, the camera claims to go as deep as 10. The underwater photos the camera takes are also superb. There is no commentary on the video, let the footage speak for itself.

Stunning all-rounder, 2008-11-09 I was going on the holiday of a lifetime which included a trip to the great barrier reef so investigated underwater cameras while wrestling with my conscience as to whether I should buy another digital camera as I already have a perfectly serviceable Fuji FinePix E900 Digital Camera [9MP 4 X Optical Zoom] In the end I decided to get the MJU850 as it was more compact as the E900 as well as having the underwater features.
After extensive usage I cannot speak highly enough of this camera. The first difference from my Fuji is how much better the night shots are thanks to a higher ISO setting of 1600. However you really need a compact tripod e.g. Joby Gorillapod to take full advantage of this as the camera has to be perfectly still or pictures are horribly blurred. Or in my case I had to find a ledge to rest it on as I'd forgotten my tripod. Moving on to the underwater performance, it survived a full day of being in and out of salt water for up to 90 mins at a time, as well as being sat on in my back pocket as I got on and off the boat. The underwater pictures are amazing and really captured the reef well despite the difficulties of seeing the lcd screen through snorkelling gear. Examples of nighttime and underwater shots have been added to the amazon page.
Other areas that impressed were the large LCD screen and the fact the battery seemed to last a long time between charges. The camera also has a scene seletion mode which makes it easy to pick the right settings. However I did miss having a viewfinder for bright daytime shots where viewing the LCD could be tricky due to glare.
In summary this camera gave me the pictures to make a once in a lifetime holiday even more memorable and the money spent is small for the priceless value of the pictures.

xD M+ Card Replaces H Type Cards, 2008-10-11 My Olympus SP-550uz needs xD type H cards (rather than the slower type M cards) to enable its SHQ 30fps video mode for longer than 15 seconds. But, type H cards are no longer available.
This new Olympus type M+ xD card (from Flash Memory) seems to enable the SHQ 30fps mode in my camera OK.
Max. recording time for a 2GB M+ xD card in SHQ mode is about 19 minutes.
