The gadget to convert Apple doubters, 2010-01-28 I have never previously been anything other than disappointed with any new mobile phone - they tend to sound great and then turn up plastic-y, heavy and technically disappointing. But this? A thrill from the moment you get the box (that lovely Apple packaging) - and it just keeps getting better. It looks beautiful, feels beautiful and is so damn sensible (or as Apple call it "intuitive"). Yes, it has all the sexy gizmo things that techies rave about, and hordes of apps etc etc. But the thought which has gone into making the thing easily usable is mindblowing. There are somewhat retro things like a real volume control (a whisper thin bit of chrome, that is just obviously a volume control - but only if you are looking for it) and a silence button (that has a red bit underneath which shows whether the ringer is on or off). The calls come up on screen with big easy questions like "Accept call" and End call" - you couldnt misunderstand what to do with this phone if you tried! In fact I would call it the perfect mobile phone for the technically challenged (though they might not need a lot of the other features!). Another bit I like after switching from a Samsung is that the speaker slot is a proper speaker connection not a proprietary, so you can use your lovely noise cancelling headphones or whatever. The touchscreen keyboard is fantastic - I had really not believed that it could work, but the number of false keys is really low,and the device often recognises what you are trying to say anyway.
On the slightly more "business" front I was dubious about ability to sync with outlook which is vital, but it couldnt be easier, or work better. Likewise ability to view word/excel/adobe dox - simply not a problem. In fact with the ability to switch to landscape view, I find reading adobe documents easier than ever before. In fact, having become a microsoft person simply through years of exposure which has led to a huge comfort zone with microsoft things, I am seriously considering shifting to apple next time I get a computer - or at least getting an ipad!

Apple Computer
- Designed to protect the MacBook and MacBook Pro 13.3" Laptop.
- Accommodates laptops measuring 27.5 x 325 x 227mm.
Greatest skin I ever had!, 2010-02-27 First I bought myself the cheap "durable neoprene skin" for 5bucks but that wasn't durable at all, then I bought this skin and I was amazed when it arrived.
My 13inch MacBook Pro fitts great and feels a lot safer in this one. I dropped my laptop once at work and it protected it well. The feel of the material is almost like memory foam but its a lot harder and durabe. Geat to protect against impact from any direction. Design and the stiching quality is geat to. It even came in a resealable waterproof bag, to give it extra protection against rainy British weather. I wished I bought this product first. Don't save on the safety of your Mac, it's really an essential product for any traveler.

Yep, 2009-12-21 Wierdly, some aspect ratio settings corrupt the wireless router, but if you change either monitor settings or router settings (i just changed monitor) it works well. Fair price, better than apple.com anyway.

Hackable, flexible, brilliant.. but only supports m4v out the box, 2010-01-09 The Apple TV has gone through some major software changes over the past 12 months. You should therefore be careful with any reviews prior to November 2009 when Apple released the 3.0 product. This release significantly improves functionality, look & feel, performance, etc. It is now superior to Frontrow and makes a superb media jukebox if you use iTunes extensively. It's great to be able to stream from your Windows or Mac media server: movies, music, photos, etc. It supports full sound surround, etc, and high def video. Very cool, along with internet radio and the Apple media store (which I personally don't use at all).
So, lets just look at some issues folks have had:
1. connections. Yup, it does not support older cabling. You need HDMI or Component. Don't buy if you've not got supported cabling. Idiots beware.
2. formats. Yup, is does not support AVI, DiVX and others out the box. If iTunes doesn't support the media then it won't work without a hack. But, with a little patience and tinkering you can get it to support all these with ease. If you are not happy hacking, then buy ATV and get a commercial product to add these extensions. Again, idiots beware.
3. size of disk. It's funny, people get hung up over the size of disk. Well, the only thing you need the disk for is rentals (which I don't do) or photos. Everything else (movies, music) you stream from your media server. There are some gottchas here: you need to make sure you allow iTunes to display unsynced media on the Apple TV. And, before that, you need to set up the device as a streamer from an itunes library (in the Apple TV settings you add an iTunes library). Now you can stream all you want and not worry about the size of the disk.
4. network performance. I have just today set up a 40GB Apple TV at a friends house over 802.11g. I never thought it would stream movies and took a spare 802.11n Airport Extreme with me in case. But it worked perfectly: no dropped frames over a wireless connection about 25 feet away. It is true that the initial sync can take some time over wireless, but that is not Apple's fault. If you have a poor wireless network then it's not going to be happy. Best advice is to sync up over physical cable first if you have a big photo collection and then switch to wireless.
5. Yup, if you smother your PC with firewalls and such don't be surprised if you have some problems. Again, it's hardly Apple's fault if you lock down your network traffic so damn hard that it can't get through.
6. cost to rent a movie. Yup, this sucks. I won't pay Apple prices on rental. But I don't need to: I buy second hand DVDs on Amazon for a buck, rip them and watch them. If you really want a movie in a hurry then Apples prices are cheaper than the petrol to get you to the movie store.
The real power of the Apple TV is as a media streamer. For that you need media to stream. So, rip your DVDs using Handbrake and VLC in the Apple TV format (m4v) and you'll absolutely love this product.
