The best season with the 'Who Shot J.R.?' cliffhanger !, 2005-10-06 Yes, this is the season which made DALLAS the number 1 TV show for several years in over 70 countries. The classic episode "A House Divided", with the "Who shot J.R.?" cliffhanger, is ranked as one of the most watched episodes in TV history with over 350 million viewers around the world in 1980. DALLAS was that big.In this season every episode is a timeless classic. The storylines and plots are fresh, timeless, ingenious and make for great drama. There is no boring part in this exciting season. Each episode is well written and acted, and there are some emotionally tear-jerking scenes. The drama is that good. You will get hooked on this excellent TV show. I'm already looking forward to watching more seasons on DVD when they are released. I hope Warner releases more seasons of DALLAS on DVD much quicker, as once a year is far too long. I thoroughly recommend this third season DVD box set.

Blink while watching Dallas: The Complete Fifth Season, and one might miss some of the fastest moving nastiness ever seen on the granddaddy of primetime soaps. Hovering over everything is the tragic loss of grizzled patriarch Jock Ewing (Jim Davis, who died prior to season 5), off on business in South America but dead before he returns to Southfork Ranch and the arms of Miss Ellie (Barbara Bel Geddes). While the widow grieves for her loss, charming scoundrel J.R. (Larry Hagman) finds new lows to reach as he conspires to woo estranged wife Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) back to Southfork and blackmail younger brother Bobby (Patrick Duffy) into abandoning his shares in Ewing Oil, thus giving J.R. control. Even J.R.'s schemes mask deeper ploys: getting back Sue Ellen means getting back their toddler son, John Ross, which means adding John Ross's ten shares to J.R.'s arsenal. Sheesh. There's also more collateral damage than ever from J.R.'s machinations, notably the complete destruction of chronic loser Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval), whose romantic overtures toward Sue Ellen stand in J.R.'s way. Not only does poor Cliff lose Sue Ellen's affections, he falls hook, line, and sinker for a fake deal dangled by a J.R. confederate, costing him the respect and support of his family and threatening his health. But there's also the infant son of Sue Ellen's late sister to think about: Bobby and baby-starved Pam (Victoria Principal) want to adopt him, but J.R. claims to be the father and threatens to take the boy away. (How do most of these people manage to live under the same Southfork roof?) Meanwhile, young Lucy (Charlene Tilton) deals with divorce and the emotional aftermath of being held hostage, and Jock's son Ray (Steve Kanaly) threatens his marital stability with impulsive investments in real estate. Everything comes to a head with a new eruption in the old Ewing-Barnes family feud, and an internal fight for control of the Ewing empire. Down and dirty, and completely irresistible. A nice special feature provides a tour of the real-life Southfork ranch. --Tom Keogh
Fabulous 5!, 2006-09-28 A great addition to the Ewing Family saga is this new DVD Box Set release of Season 5.
This glossy drama just keeps on growing from strength to strength, and the hits keep right on-a coming. The opening episode of this season allows us to find out who the body in the Southfork pool is and in later episodes we say goodbye to a well-loved character plus welcome the addition of a fateful character who was to make her mark in later seasons in more ways than one.
Season 5 of "Dallas" treats us to some beautifully filmed episodes at both Southfork Ranch in Braddock and the Southern Cross Ranch in San Angelo which belongs to the wealthy Farlow clan - Clayton (Howard Keel) and crippled Son, Stephen 'Dusty' (Jared Martin). The Southern Cross is also the new abode for J.R.'s estranged wife, Sue Ellen and their Son, John Ross, but the question is - for how long, as courtroom battles for the custody of J.R. III soon get underway.
Don't be afraid to add this Box Set to your growing collection of Series episodes from this acclaimed Television Drama!

The Ewing's Are Back, 2007-10-22 When I watched the first epsisode of Dallas when it first came out on DVD in 2004 at the age 13 I was hoooked. The life of the Ewings grasped me and ever since I've kept a close eye on when the boxsets came out. But for this series I was extremely excited as I was aware that many new characters were being introduced; the gorgeous Priscilla Beaulieu Presley as Bobby's first love with a baby that might possibly be Bobby's, Morgan Brittany as the evil Katherine Wentworth who worked with J.R. to split up her half sister Pam and Bobby, John Beck returns as Mark Graison the man trying to win over Pam;s heart and unfortunately does when her and Bobby's divorce is finalised, Sue Ellen continues her marriage with J.R. with a deal that allows both can sleep with whoever they please and she chooses her very own son's young counciler Peter Richards who is dating youn Licy Ewing, Audrey Landers also returns as Afton Cooper (Cliff's girlfriend) who is continuing her singing carrer and finally Howard Keel returns as Clayton Farlow but this time engaged to our very own Miss.Ellie.
And as always the resolution of the previous series cliffhanger, the Southfork fire in which no Ewings were hurt but Southfork was gutted. And as always family arguments, the sex, the money, the old relationships, the new relarionships, the crooked buisness deals, the lies and betrayl. Oh and not forgetting of course the tradition of the Barnes Ewing fued being fought out by J.R. with the resources of Ewing Oil and Cliff Barnes using his new resources as the head of Barnes/Wentworth. All in my opinion contributing to the 7th and in my opinion best season of Dallas so far.
All of tis leading up to the one of the most shocking cliffhangers ever, where 3 bullets are fired into J.R.'s chair at Ewing oil and the body of no other than Bobby Ewing slumping to the floor!!!!!

Much better than I expected!, 2008-07-26 I was pleasantly surprised that this season 9 is actually a good season and much better than I remembered. There were changes made in this season to freshen up DALLAS and I found that most of the changes were okay, and there is some strong writing at times and strong lines. It appeared the story-lines of the Marinos and emerald mine scams went on for a couple of episodes too long. This season 9 is best viewed as an exclusive and self-contained/standalone season.
It's great having Barbara Bel Geddes back as Miss Ellie and she is a breath of fresh air and this season 9 is all the better because of her return. In fact, Barbara Bel Geddes and Larry Hagman are both strong in their performances and they both demonstrate their fine acting skills throughout. There are some good and interesting plot-lines in this season. There are scenes in overseas locations which, like in the season 8 dvd, gets the characters out of the soundstage sets and into the outdoors.
There's some amazing acting by Linda Gray during Sue Ellen's rock bottom period. Linda Gray is on record as stating that her rock bottom story-line this season is one of her two favorite Sue Ellen story-lines of the entire series; her other favorite Sue Ellen story-line is the Valentine lingerie one in the next season.
Victoria Principal is great this season too and she's impressive at times, and in one powerful scene Pam explodes in a restaurant at Cliff, while in another scene Ken Kercheval gives a good performance when Cliff explodes at Pam in a nightclub. I would have liked there to have been fireworks between JR and Pam whilst she worked at Ewing Oil rather than the feeble sparks on one or two occasions. I found it an emotional moment as a viewer when Pam turns around and shockingly lays eyes on a past lover. I was caught by surprise at feeling emotional when you-know-who is back in the end-of-season cliffhanger!
There is some great acting by Susan Howard and Steve Kanaly during their story-line of Donna's pregnancy abnormality. Susan Howard is credited for writing the episode "Sitting Ducks", and she is on record as stating that her downs syndrome story-line during this season is her favorite story-line of the entire series.
Larry Hagman steals a lot of scenes he's in and he's on fine form as nasty ol' JR - "Now you listen to me, Kenderson. There was a time I wouldn't waste a minute on you. I'd simply have your legs broken." Barbara Carrera of James Bond "Never Say Never Again" fame is good as the femme fatale (and the series' most sinister villain) but a lot of her outfits are outlandish. The character of Mark Graison makes a return and there are good scenes where Graison punches JR to the floor and another where an angry Graison threatens JR due to JR digging up dirt from his past.
JR is also digging into the past of Sue Ellen's new beau Jerry Kenderson and he tells his stooge Detective McSween, "I want dirt on Kenderson. Go back to Kindergarten if you have to. And Harry, the dirtier the better!" wearing his devilish grin! Martha Scott plays Sue Ellen's mother this season and in one witty line J.R. tells his mother-in-law (after she puts down Mandy Winger), "Of course, Sue Ellen descended from Royalty on your side of the family, or maybe her daddy's ?!"
I did enjoy the new 15 minute featurette "Seasons of Change" and found it more interesting than the several featurettes since the season 5 dvd. DALLAS producer and writer David Paulsen repeats the official line when he says, "I never heard anybody come up with a better solution to bringing Patrick Duffy as Bobby back onto that show, which is what was needed. I thought it was an absolutely perfect solution because of the reality of the unreality of dreams."
The episodes this season are available to be chosen from the initial dvd menu as soon as the disc is inserted. There are now four episodes on each side of the discs (the same as many other TV shows on DVD). There are four double-sided dvds housed in two slimline cases. Each side of the two slimline cases has a brief description for each episode and some nice pictures. [The U.S. NTSC Region 1 version is locked to region 1 only and not region-free like previous seasons].
The spoken languages available are English and German, while the available subtitles are English, German and Swedish.
I'm really looking forward to the excellent season 10 dvd - the last of the best seasons DALLAS had, IMO - released in UK/Ireland on 19 January 2009. I hope to complete my DALLAS dvd collection as I like ALL seasons of DALLAS and there are some good episodes and some good drama even in the final three seasons which are better than some of the junk on TV nowadays.

Better than I feared !, 2008-03-05 This was very compelling drama indeed ! Lucy working in a cheap coffee bar , JR trying to steal Cliff Barnes girlfriend , Jason Ewing's daughter working with Cliff & Pammie to get their claws into Ewing Oil , Clayton's troubles with Jock's ' ghost ' and all the fuss about whether or not Mark Graison is dead certainly captivate the viewer and as for the complex twists & turns concerning Bobby & Jenna...
Donna Reid is better as Miss Elie than I feared . Rather like Sir Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot - not the definitive performance but most acceptable non the less . JR & Sue Ellen have their troubles as ever caused by JR's skirt chasing . All in all I thought this was a step up from Season 7 & proof positive that a series can improve as time passes on ! I keenly await season 9 while loving the respectively attitude to towards Jock . The late Jim Davis would have been very touched and rather suprised at Donna Krebbes packing in The Texas Oil Commission to run an oil company . Steve Kanaly played Ray Krebbes very well - it is nice to see a regular guy getting a look in !

Dallas: The Complete First and Second Seasons is an American equivalent to those British mini-series about historical chapters in that country's royal monarchy. Full of family in-fighting, political intrigue crossed with personal triumph or disappointment, and plenty of sensational infidelities and betrayals, Dallas is a captivating story of a wealthy oil family's power and travails. It is also uniquely fun and daringly absurd, albeit with a straight face; this hugely successful, primetime soap opera began in the late 1970s and ran 14 seasons in all, built on a handful of primary relationships that stretch credulity but never descend into self-parody. Not unexpectedly, Dallas begins with a Romeo and Juliet tale that instantly exposes an old feud between two families and strips the civilized veneer from several major characters. Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy), youngest of three sons of independent oilman Jock Ewing (Jim Davis), arrives at the Ewing clan's Southfork ranch just outside Dallas, Texas, with a new wife, Pam Barnes Ewing (Victoria Principal). Pam is the daughter of Digger Barnes (David Wayne), an old business rival of Jock's and one-time suitor of the Ewing matriarch, Eleanor (or "Miss Ellie", played by Barbara Bel Geddes). Pam's also the sister of a state senator, Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval), whose vendetta against the Ewings is played out in the legislature, imposing costly regulations on their business and holding committee investigations into questionable practices of company president J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman). Pam's status as the newest Ewing causes an uproar in the family (besides being a Barnes, she also dated the Ewings' genial but lonely foreman, Ray Krebbs, played by Steve Kanaly) and prompts Dallas' charming villain, J.R., to make many Iago-like attempts, over the first two seasons, to drive her from Bobby's arms. Pam has a different set of problems with the other, jealous Ewing women, including J.R.'s possibly barren and alcoholic wife, Sue Ellen (Linda Gray), and teenage Lucy (Charlene Tilton), daughter of exiled Ewing son Gary (Ted Shackleford). With new and old resentments flying and everyone deeply suspicious of everyone else's motives (even the ailing Jock doesn't trust J.R.), there's plenty of drama to chew on. Still, storylines are often larger than the sum of these parts, with lots of kidnappings, marital affairs, plane crashes, and shootings ratcheting up suspense. Dallas is pure pleasure, a little guilty, perhaps, but not a sin. --Tom Keogh
Dallas :Seasions 1 and 2 , 2006-11-15 "Dallas" was THE soap OF THE 70s/80s,i know it continued to the early 90s but was at its best in the 70s/80s.
The show started life as a mini-series in 1978,showing youngest son of the "Ewing Oil" empire Bobby(Patrick Duffy)marrying Pamela Barnes (Victoria Principal)the daughter of his Daddy's- Jock(Jim Davis)-bitter enemy "Digger" Barnes,(David Wayne then Keenan Wynne)his alcholic ex partner, who blames Jock for "stealing" his share and for everything else, wrong with his life.
Miss Ellie(Barbara Bel Geddes)is the voice of reason at the Southfork ranch(a totally different location in the mini series)regularly stopping Bobby and evil older brother J.R.(Larry Hagman who WAS Dallas)coming to blows, she makes Pam welcome and quickly comes to love her, also Jock but J.R. never does and continually trys to get rid of Pam throughout her time on the show.
Linda Gray as Sue-Ellen has not much to do in the mini-series although in "The Barbacue" she gets drunk which Sue-Ellen did a lot in Dallas and no-one can do such furious looks as Linda Gray!
Steve Kanaly as Ray,is more devious than the good ole cowboy,he later became, having an affair with young Lucy(Charlene Tilton)the fact that later,it was revealed Jock was Ray's son,a few seasons later and that Ray had had an affair with his niece was glossed over!
Ken Kercheval as "loser" Cliff Barnes makes a strong performance throughout but his part doesn't become bigger until towards the end of season 2.
In season 2 we meet middle son Gary and ex wife Valene(David Ackroyd and Joan Van Ark)in "Reunion",Lucy having tracked down her mother,Joan Van Ark is instantly likeable as down home Valene, its strange seeing another actor playing Gary,as Ted Shackleford, later plays the role in "Dallas" before spining-off to "Knots Landing" with Joan Van Ark.
David Ackroyd is more vulnerable than Ted Shackleford's Gary,he tends to stress out more while Shackleford's Gary tends to get more aggressive,J.R. is seen at his most ruthless here, when he sets Gary up in a buisness he knows is in a mess, causing Gary to leave Southfork, then he gets rid of Valene too,no wonder J.R. got a frosty reception whenever he visited "Knots Landing".
Victoria Principal is very strong as Pam in these early episodes,it was a shame that in later episodes,Pam became more and more a victim and lost some of the fire she had in these early shows.
The murder of Julie,J.R.'s secretary and long time lover in the 2nd season is shocking and poor old Cliff is in the frame for a while, setting up an even more bitter feud between him and J.R.
The first proper cliffhanger is at the end of season 2 with Sue-Ellen pregnant and drinking heavily, involved in a car crash, leaving her and new born baby,John Ross,on life support machines, their lives in the balance,J.R. devasted and the paternity unclear,is Cliff the father or J.R?.
It does eventually turn out to be J.R.
Some shows don't improve with age, this one does,so if you haven't seen "Dallas" before, give it a go,you'll be addicted!

More please!, 2008-10-08 While any release of Neighbours on DVD should probably be duly applauded, frankly I have my misgivings about this meagre collection. Imagine if the works of Beethoven were known to us solely via a condensed album of his most popular moments (such as 'Fur Elise', the finale of the ninth symphony and the 'Grosse Fugue')! Imagine if the great Bard of Stafford-upon-Avon were represented within the literary archives by a single volume of familiar speeches- robbed of any context within their respective plays! How could a reader even begin to unlock the innermost layer of spiritual profundity that is implicit within the "To be or not to be" monologue, without having first appreciated its role within the overall framework of 'King Lear'? Those who would seriously claim that Neighbours is of less historical importance than the works of Beethoven or Shakespeare are just small-minded cultural elitists who do not deserve to have a voice within our classless society.
Anyhow, just what is the point in presenting a few random episodes outside of their relevant position within the finely-chiselled arc of the overriding story? Surely it is now time to start releasing the COMPLETE and UNEDITED back catalogue- in order to fully contextualise such unforgettable moments as Bouncer's dream and the painting of Mrs Mangle?! Ideally, the discs should include director's commentaries, cast interviews and hilarious outtakes of actors fluffing their lines (and walking into doors etc.). Multi-lingual subtitles would also be a good idea, enabling the whole world to enjoy the project as one (although any dubbing over the original dialogue would most certainly NOT be acceptable). Ideally, the original footage should be digitally re-mastered and issued in high-definition, although, if one is entirely honest, there may not be sufficient demand for a blu-ray release to be commercially viable. Still, realistically speaking, I have high hopes for a regular DVD box-set of the back-catalogue, which (give or take a couple of hundred) would consist of a thousand discs- in order to house 5500+ episodes to date.
PS. Unfortunately my petition for a Government subsidy of the project has been rejected by no. 10's website- under the grounds that it is "intended to be humorous, or has no point about government policy". What a triumph for democracy! The Government may consider this to be a laughing matter, but I struggle to see the funny side when it comes to their blase attitudes towards the preservation of our heritage. The petition has still gone ahead, however, hosted on a different site. If you feel as strongly as I do, please make yourself heard here!

More Southfork shenanigans and Ewing Oil skulduggery in the much-loved legendary saga., 2008-11-02 The worldwide mega-hit drama that dominated the 80s returns with the wheelings and dealings of those entertaining and feuding oil-rich Texans in this Season 10 DVD of all the action from Southfork and Ewing Oil. DALLAS returns to its original formula of focusing on the charismatic Ewing family, their in-fighting and J.R.'s scheming. This dramatically vibrant season won the U.S. People's Choice Award for Favourite Night Time Dramatic Serial in 1987 and its quality scripts, tightly woven plots and imaginative storylines breathe new life into the show.
Larry Hagman puts on his famous Texan Stetson for another great performance as that lovable villain J.R. Ewing who this season engineers one of his biggest and sneakiest schemes in a plot to blow up rival Arabian oil fields and stirs up a hornets' nest of trouble. The Emmy-winning and legendary Barbara Bel Geddes, who is honoured at the American Theatre Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions to American theatre, displays her great talent as an actress when Wes Parmalee's shock Jock revelation causes Miss Ellie to battle with her family and her conscience. Linda Gray wonderfully portrays a fun and conniving Sue Ellen who sets up sultry Mandy (former Miss USA Deborah Shelton) as her company's sexy lingerie model in a revenge scheme against J.R. Patrick Duffy and Victoria Principal are reunited for their winning portrayal of the 80s supercouple Bobby and Pam who finally remarry after being apart for so long. In an episode written by cast member Susan Howard Chrane (Donna Krebbs), J.R.'s venom level rises against Cliff which sets another sneaky J.R. scheme in motion.
This is a fun and funny season with many humorous lines including some between J.R. and Sue Ellen! Ken Kercheval splendidly plays Cliff Barnes in a light-hearted style throughout this season which makes Cliff more interesting and amusing. Movie veteran Steve Forrest gives a convincing performance as Wes Parmalee in a storyline involving mystery, scandal and intrigue. Victoria Principal and Ken Kercheval both display their good acting skills in some strong and entertaining scenes together. Newcomer Sheree J. Wilson is good as the show's new scheming and money-hungry bitch April Stevens. This season's final episode - with the spectacular end-of-season cliffhanger of Pam's explosive exit - is Victoria Principal's, Susan Howard's and Deborah Shelton's last appearances on the show. The legend that is Larry Hagman won the U.S. Soap Opera Digest Awards for Outstanding Prime Time Lead Actor and for Outstanding Prime Time Villain during this season. This is a tightly-written and taut season and it also has many comic moments and some shocking ones too.
This tenth season is produced by DALLAS veteran David Paulsen (Writer, Director & Story Editor of DVD Seasons 6, 7 & 8) and is well-plotted and well-executed and it also smashed its competition of the new hit MIAMI VICE in the U.S. ratings every week for the whole 1986-87 season which demonstrated the success and strength of this Season 10.
Next on DALLAS in the Season 11 DVD packed with devious intrigue has a nastier and meaner J.R. Ewing who is up to his evil schemes and sinister plotting to exact his ultimate revenge on Weststar. There are 4 seasons left to be released on DVD of the world's most-famous soap opera.
