Having just invested in Blu-ray technology I wondered what disc to start with. I thought natural history would be a sensible initial investment. I was not wrong. The HD of 'EARTH' certainly delivers and the colours and fine detail are worth the investment. I heartily recommend it.

Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5 Still a great adventure!, 2008-11-11
I only bought this DVD after watching the first few episodes on NatGeo. I didn't plan on watching it after reading the bad reviews here. But I loved Long Way Round and knew I just had to watch these two guys again.

The first big criticism abt this series must be Eve's (Ewan's wife) out-of-the-blue decision to join them. As a woman I was slightly embarrassed for her because she had never even ridden a motorcycle before! It didn't help that Ewan was gleeful of the prospect and I felt exactly what Charlie must have felt - oh gooooooood! It all seemed like too much of an indulgence on Ewan's side and Eve looked like a clueless and spoilt, bored housewife. However, what most reviewers did not say is that she only joined for a short section of the journey - thankfully on a realistically easy route from Malawi. Despite my earlier apprehension, I have to say that she did remarkably well and didn't whine and whinge despite falling off her bike riding on the sand. And everyone was very gracious about her being there. That said, I did think it was a bit much to have Charley riding on his own (on one section) while Ewan took Eve on an easier route. But Charley was a real sport and didn't bitch about it, which I though showed why he and Ewan are best mates. If the McGregor decide to go on another bike trip together, they should save it for a trip all on its own. Leave the two lads to go on with their own adventure!!

Second criticism about the show being too commercial is I think being a tad unfair considering how much it must cost to embark on such a journey. Despite the trip being on the poorest continent in the world, the places they stayed at (lodges and hotels) charge prime rate (unless they're all part of the freebies). No one claimed that they were going to do this on backpacker's budget! But neither was it Hollywood-budget!

The thing that stuck to me the most was that there was a bit when Charley and Ewan had a huge bust up which they decided not to show on film. I was in two minds about this. One one hand I think it was a relief they didn't go the "reality tv" route and air all their dirty laundry - this kept the dignity and integrity of the show I think. But on the other hand, it was a missed opportunity and the programme after that just seemed to skim the surface of their friendship. We see them laughing and joking a lot but it certainly would have been intriguing to see another side to their relationship. Still, all credit to them for kissing and making up!

The second and third leg of the journey were certainly more "involved" - the first leg (from Scotland to Sudan) was them just plowing through. But I liked that they realised this hence they took more time to see and experience Africa afterwards. I did think the arrival in Cape Town was a bit of an anti-climax. Not sure why but it just seemed that way. And why do we see Charley reunited with his wife and kids, but no Eve for Ewan? No one mentioned this at all. Just seemed another production hole!

I liked the extras but I wished they had done the same (as they did for Long Way Round) and did reactions about the trip months afterward (not just about the various charities they got involved with afterwards). I would have liked to hear more about Eve's involvement in the trip and hear if she thought it was a good idea and would she continue biking! Even going on a trip herself!

I love love love Ewan and Charlie because I think they are such decent and fun fun chaps!! Sooooo looking forward to Long Way Up!!! And they still have India and South East Asia to tackle!

Paradise Lost

The rape and murder of a young, white schoolteacher, leads to the arrest of her black boyfriend Milton Jones. But as
accusations of racism begin to fly, new evidence establishes Milton's innocence,
turning him from suspect to witness. Now the team must infiltrate a hostile and suspicious community to catch the real killer.

Curriculum Vitae

A working mother arrives home to find her baby girl dead and her nanny missing. The nanny is on the run, so it seems cut and dried. But the deeper they look, the more complex it becomes. With the discovery of identity theft, babies sedated with cannabis, and skeletons in family closets, it becomes hard to separate the innocent from the guilty.

Mirror Image

The high profile murder of a Metropolitan Police Commander and his wealthy wife puts Walker, Connor and the team under pressure to get a fast result. Missing jewellery indicates a burglary gone wrong, but with relatives set to profit from their deaths, the police focus is on the family; in particular identical twin sons, Michael and Rory.

Two top adventures from the fab trio.
Firstly Clarkson and James May set out to drive to the North Pole in a modified gas-guzzler, entering the Guiness book of records as the first people to drive to the Pole. Meanwhile the Hampster is going by dog sled. Clarkson and James have to negotiate ice boulders and bears whilst ripping the underside of their Toyota (yet another plug Clarkie). But on the positive side there are no cops or traffic wardens so they can sip gin and T whilst on the move.
This version is somewhat longer than that seen on television and is most enjoyable.
Then the star for me.........Armed with a thousand bucks a piece, our intrepid heroes venture to the Deep South of the USA where they purchase old US bangers and drive to New Orleans where they intend selling said vehicles.
After a series of hilarious adventures they reach their destination.
Some reviewers have stated that this episode was cut and had the music changed. Well, I did not notice. It seemed all right to me and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This is a really chuckle-worthy, rib-rattling set and I could watch it over and over again.
TOP GEAR AT ITS VERY BEST...................

Life of Mammals [2002]

Life of Mammals [2002]

Rated: Exempt
Staring: David Attenborough

David Attenborough and the BBC have a well-earned reputation for producing some of the greatest nature programmes, but The Life of Mammals could well be Attenborough's magnum opus. Much of the footage shot for this series had never been seen before, and is presented with the respect and reverence for the natural world that Attenborough has made his trademark. It never ceases to surprise: the sight of a lion taking down a wildebeest on the African savannah has almost become a cliché of nature programmes, yet in The Life of Mammals the cameras keep rolling and the viewer witnesses the fallen animal's herd coming to its rescue and driving off the lion. It's a moving sight and just one of many remarkable scenes.

A thorough and entertaining overview of one of evolution's greatest success stories, the series is loosely structured to follow the development of mammals, beginning with the basics in "A Winning Design", which clarifies what makes a mammal different from reptiles and birds--no, it isn't egg-laying: both the platypus and the echidna are egg-laying mammals; it's their ability to adapt. And it's this adaptability that becomes the crux of the remainder of the series. "Insect Hunters" focuses on mammals who have specifically adapted to eating insects, from the giant anteater and the armoured armadillo to bats, which have evolved into complex and effective hunters. "Plant Predators" demonstrates the particular (and often peculiar) adaptations of herbivores, while "Chisellers" is about those mammals who feed primarily on roots and seeds, ranging from tree-dwelling squirrels to opportunistic mice and rats. "Meat Eaters" talks about the evolutionary arms race that exists between predators and prey, and the unique adaptations of both individual and pack hunters. Omnivores are explored in "Opportunists"--mammals like bears and raccoons, whose varied diet allows them to occupy nearly any environment. "Return to the Water" discusses those mammals such as whales, seals and dolphins that have left behind life on dry land and adapted completely to life in the sea, existing at the top of the food chain. The last three episodes--"Life in the Trees", "Social Climbers" and "Food for Thought"--take the viewer through the development of primates, eventually culminating in that most successful mammal: man. --Robert Burrow

I found this feature documentary to be an amazing compilation of mans journey of all journeys - to travel to the moon. For those who know little about the Apollo missions this is a great overview, beautifully put together with an easy pace. More importantly are the words from the astronauts themselves. They truly convey their experiences to the audience with deep conviction and passion. The political climate in the sixties and Kennedys astounding vision lay the foundations for this incredible feat to be realised within a decade. This is simply and profoundly awe inspiring.

Coast : BBC Series 1-3 (9 Disc Box set) [2005]

Coast : BBC Series 1-3 (9 Disc Box set) [2005]

Rated: Exempt
Director: Oliver Clark (III)

All three series to date of the terrific documentary series Coast have been brought together in this nine-disc set, delivering over 1600 minutes of fascinating viewing.

If you're new to Coast, this is the series that investigates and explores the mysteries of the British coastline. It's an ambitious piece of work, attacked with real enthusiasm and knowledge by its team. And it's their passion that's one part of the success of this series.

The other magical ingredient though is the British coastline itself, and few opportunities are passed over to maximise it. There's some glorious photography on show here, all the better for its digital presentation, and if anything--extraordinary given the running time of the three series--the only criticism of note is that in their desire to cover all of the British Isles, the team go at a faster pace sometimes than you'd like.

That's hardly a damning criticism though, and it certainly pales in comparison to perhaps the best complement that you can attribute to Coast, that it inspires you to seek out and visit the many places it shows you. A superb, fascinating piece of work, and this three-series set is a complete delight. --Jon Foster

This is an excellent series with true BBC investigation and great contribution from experts and people that lived during the times that some of the programs refer to.
It is definitely worthwhile buying and watching the whole series and it gives many hours of entertainment at a very good price. I actually think that buying the 3 series in one box is a great advantage and worth the extra money as you can not get enough of it.Great value!
Please go ahead and buy all 3 and you will enjoy it for sure!!

John Adams (HBO Films) [2008]

John Adams (HBO Films) [2008]

Rated: Suitable for 12 years and over
Staring: David Morse, Justin Theroux, Paul Giamatti, Sarah Polley, Tom Wilkinson
Director: Tom Hooper

Based on David McCullough's bestselling biography, the HBO miniseries John Adams is the furthest thing from a starry-eyed look at America's founding fathers and the brutal path to independence. Adams (Paul Giamatti), second president of the United States, is portrayed as a skilled orator and principled attorney whose preference for justice over anti-English passions earns enemies. But he also gains the esteem of the first national government of the United States, i.e., the Continental Congress, which seeks non-firebrands capable of making a reasoned if powerful case for America's break from England's monarchy. The first thing one notices about John Adams' dramatisations of congress' proceedings, and the fervent pro-independence violence in the streets of Boston and elsewhere, is that America's roots don't look pretty or idealised here. Some horrendous things happen in the name of protest, driving Adams to push the cause of independence in a legitimate effort to get on with a revolutionary war under the command of George Washington. But the process isn't easy: not every one of the 13 colonies-turned-states is ready to incur the wrath of England, and behind-the-scenes negotiations prove as much a part of 18th century congressional sessions as they do today.

Besides this peek into a less-romanticised version of the past, John Adams is also a story of the man himself. Adams' frustration at being forgotten or overlooked at critical junctures of America's early development--sent abroad for years instead of helping to draft the U.S. constitution--is detailed. So is his dismay that the truth of what actually transpired leading to the signing of the Declaration of Independence has been slowly forgotten and replaced by a rosier myth. But above all, John Adams is the story of two key ties: Adams' 54-year marriage to Abigail Adams (Laura Linney), every bit her husband's intellectual equal and anchor, and his difficult, almost symbiotic relationship with Thomas Jefferson (Stephen Dillane) over decades. Giamatti, of course, has to carry much of the drama, and if he doesn't always seem quite believable in the series' first half, he becomes increasingly excellent at the point where an aging Adams becomes bitter over his place in history. Linney is marvelous, as is Dillane, Sarah Polley as daughter Nabby, Danny Huston as cousin Samuel Adams, and above all Tom Wilkinson as a complex but indispensable Ben Franklin. --Tom Keogh

This portrayal of the progression in the definition of democracy and freedom as developed by the American forefathers is gripping and inspiring. "John Adams" is human and beautifully depicts this critical moment in history, showing that through conflict, disagreements, challenging ideas and thoughts, a people can form a seemingly unreachable way of governing. I particularly enjoyed the representations of the stark differences in policy between John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and other forefathers. The acting was terrific, script well-written. I highly recommend this series to all individuals of all ages from all backgrounds.

When I first saw this for preorder I was overjoyed because I thought the collection would be complete. Alas it's missing a lot of great Louis Theroux episodes- some available on past dvds (Hypnosis, UFOs) but many unreleased (Infomercials, Off off broadway, Demolition derby, Louis & Michael Jackson...). Louis writes in the insert that he wanted to include "When Louis met Max Clifford" in the set but Simon Cowell refused to give legal permission. Fans like myself then, can only hope they release a 2nd volume in the near future and Simon finds his sense of humour and relents. Needless to say however that what is part of this collection is well worth the investment.

The back of the dvd box states that due to copyright there have been some edits made to some episodes but I can happily say that whatever edits were made aren't noticible overall. There do seem to be a couple of abrupt cuts in one or two episodes but I have no idea if that wasn't how they were originally broadcast.

Lazily the only extras in this collection are a very young looking Louis' reports from Michael Moore's old TV Nation show. At the very least they could have ported the extras from the previous Weird weekend dvds to this set. At most episode commentaries would have been a very welcome addition.

Regardless of all the could-have-beens if you're a Louis Theroux fan this is an essential purchase and I would also recommend getting his book/audiobook in which Louis revisits and follows up on many of the subjects featured in this collection.

Having seen this series on TV a while back, I made sure that I purchased it when it came out on DVD. I wasn't disapointed. The transfer to DVD hasn't dulled the experience. The scenery is still amazing, the job the truckers do is even more so.

It follows the lives of 6 truckers over the course of 2 months, delivering various loads to the 3 diamond mines. The job these people do is inspiring. OK, they do it for a shed load of cash, but even so, taking a 20 tonne truck with a 50 tonne load onto 3 feet of ice is awe inspiring in anyones language.

There is an addition not shown on Channel 5, where the truckers are round a table discussing their experience. This was an added bonus, and answers some questions that you had when watching the dvd, but to stretch it to 2 episodes, and miss out the episode of the history of the ice road (shown on TV) I thought was a missed opportunity.

Overall, a must for anyones DVD collection.
