Buffy The Vampire Slayer - The Complete DVD Collection

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - The Complete DVD Collection

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Artist: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Joss Whedon
Staring: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Anthony Stewart Head, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter

From its charming and angst-ridden first season to the darker, apocalyptic final one, Buffy the Vampire Slayer succeeds on many levels, and in a fresher and more authentic way than the shows that came before or after it. How lucky, then, that with the release of its box set of seasons 1-7, you can have the estimable pleasure of watching a near-decade of Buffy in any order you choose. (And we have some ideas about how that should be done.)

First: rest assured that there's no shame in coming to Buffy late, even if you initially turned your nose up at the winsome Sarah Michelle Gellar kicking the hell out of vampires (in Buffy-lingo, vamps), demons, and other evil-doers. Perhaps you did so because, well, it looked sort of science-fiction-like with all that monster latex. Start with season 3 and see that Buffy offers something for everyone, and the sooner you succumb to it, the quicker you'll appreciate how textured and riveting a drama it is.

Why season 3? Because it offers you a winning cast of characters who have fallen from innocence: their hearts have been broken, their egos trampled in typically vicious high-school style, and as a result, they've begun to realize how fallible they are. As much as they try, there are always more monsters, or a bigger evil. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the core crew remains something of a unit--there's the smart girl, Willow (Alyson Hannigan) who dreams of saving the day by downloading the plans to City Hall's sewer tunnels and mapping a route to safety. There are the ne'r do wells--the vampire Spike (James Marsters), who both clashes with and aspires to love Buffy; the tortured and torturing Angel (David Boreanz); the pretty, popular girl with an empty heart (Charisma Carpenter); and the teenage everyman, Xander (Nicholas Brendon).

Then there's Buffy herself, who in the course of seven seasons morphs from a sarcastic teenager in a minidress to a heroine whose tragic flaw is an abiding desire to be a "normal" girl. On a lesser note, with the box set you can watch the fashion transformation of Buffy from mall rat to Prada-wearing, kickboxing diva with enviable highlights. (There was the unfortunate bob of season 2, but it's a forgivable lapse.) At least the storyline merits the transformations: every time Buffy has to end a relationship she cuts her hair, shedding both the pain and her vulnerability.

In addition to the well-wrought teenage emotional landscape, Buffy deftly takes on more universal themes--power, politics, death, morality--as the series matures in seasons 4-6. And apart from a few missteps that haven't aged particularly well ("I Robot" in season 1 comes to mind), most episodes feel as harrowing and as richly drawn as they did at first viewing. That's about as much as you can ask for any form of entertainment: that it offer an escape from the viewer's workaday world and entry into one in which the heroine (ideally one with leather pants) overcomes demons far more troubling than one's own. --Megan Halverson

I loved this show from beginning to end. I just loved it and missed it so much when it ended, I'm not so sad that not over it now but really love it! I agree with everything said in all reviews, great show has everything etc. I do not however agree that Season 2 as quoted by Amazon is a 'bob' in the series that can be 'forgiven'. This was an amazing season especially from the episode Whats my line 1 & 2, Angel going evil, jenny calender being killed in passion, becoming 1 & 2. Amazing! This was the season that made the show take off, everyone was watching it by season 3 and season 1 was the very beginning! Amazon, please watch Season 2 again, it rocks! :-) Thanks enjoy.

WALL-E (2 Disc Special Edition) [2008]

WALL-E (2 Disc Special Edition) [2008]

Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Fred Willard, John Ratzenberger, Jeff Garlin
Director: Andrew Stanton

Pixar genius reigns in this funny romantic comedy, which stars a robot who says absolutely nothing for a full 25 minutes yet somehow completely transfixes and endears himself to the audience within the first few minutes of the film. As the last robot left on earth, Wall-E (voiced by Ben Burtt) is one small robot--with a big, big heart--who holds the future of Earth and mankind squarely in the palm of his metal hand. He's outlasted all the "Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class" robots that were assigned some 700 years ago to clean up the environmental mess that man made of earth while man vacationed aboard the luxury spaceship Axiom. Wall-E has dutifully gone about his job compacting trash, the extreme solitude broken only by his pet cockroach, but he's developed some oddly human habits and ideas. When the Axiom sends its regularly scheduled robotic EVE probe (Elissa Knight) to earth, Wall-E is instantly smitten and proceeds to try to impress EVE with his collection of human memorabilia. EVE's directive compels her to bring Wall-E's newly collected plant sprout to the captain of the Axiom and Wall-E follows in hot pursuit. Suddenly, the human world is turned upside down and the Captain (Jeff Garlin) joins forces with Wall-E and a cast of other misfit robots to lead the now lethargic people back home to earth. Wall-E is a great family film with the most impressive aspect being the depth of emotion conveyed by a simple robot--a machine typically considered devoid of emotion, but made so absolutely touching by the magic of Pixar animation. Also well-worth admiring are the sweeping views from space, the creative yet disturbing vision of what strange luxuries a future space vacation might offer, and the innovative use of trash in a future cityscape. Underneath the slapstick comedy and touching love story is a poignant message about the folly of human greed and its potential effects on earth and the entire human race. --Tami Horiuchi, Amazon.com

Cloverfield [2007]

Cloverfield [2007]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Michael Stahl-david, Lizzy Caplan, Mike Vogel, Odette Yustman, Jessica Lucas
Director: Matt Reeves

One of the first things a viewer notices about Cloverfield is that it doesn't play by ordinary storytelling rules, making this intriguing horror film as much a novelty as an event. Told from the vertiginous point-of-view of a camcorder-wielding group of friends, Cloverfield begins like a television soap opera about young Manhattanites coping with changes in their personal lives. Rob (Michael Stahl-David) is leaving New York to take an executive job at a company in Japan. At his goodbye party in a crowded loft, Rob's brother Jason (Mike Vogel) hands a camcorder to best friend Hud (T.J. Miller), who proceeds to tape the proceedings over old footage of Rob's ex-girlfriend, Beth (Odette Yustman)--images shot during happy times in their ex-relationship. Naturally, Beth shows up at the party with a new beau, bumming Rob out completely. Just before one's eyes glaze over from all this heartbreaking stuff (captured by Hud, who's something of a doofus, in laughably shaky camerawork), the unexpected happens: New York is suddenly under attack from a Godzilla-like monster stomping through midtown and destroying everything and everybody in sight. Rob and company hit the streets, but rather than run with other evacuees, they head toward the center of the storm so that Rob can rescue an injured Beth. There are casualties along the way, but the journey into fear is fascinating and immediate if emotionally remote--a consequence of seeing these proceedings through the singular, subjective perspective of a camcorder and of a story that intentionally leaves major questions unanswered: Who or what is this monster? Where did it come from? The lack of a backstory, and spare views of the marauding creature, are clever ways by producer J.J. Abrams and director Matt Reeves to keep an audience focused exclusively on what's on the screen. But it also makes Cloverfield curiously uninvolving. Ultimately, Cloverfield, with its spectacular effects brilliantly woven into a home-video look, is a celebration of infinite possibilities in this age of accessible, digital media. -Tom Keogh

This is one of my favourite movies. It's so different from other films and I like the fact that this film wasn't afraid to be something new and unique. I don't suffer from motion sickness so the camera was fine for me and allowed me to see the film in all its edgy, experimental brilliantness. The actual plot was incredible as it allowed the viewers to come to their own conclusion as to what happened. It was a film to make you think and wonder while getting a fix of action, gore and pure fright. It was a little too short for my liking but to be honest I think any longer could have dragged it out and ruined it. It's not a film to watch if you suffer from motion sickness or if you like your films to fully explain what's happening as it progresses. It's a monster film with a difference and gets a full 5 stars from me because it's awesome.

Hancock [2008]

Hancock [2008]

Rated: Suitable for 12 years and over
Staring: Will Smith, Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman
Director: Peter Berg

Hancock turns the standard superhero movie inside-out. The titular character, played by Will Smith, can fly, has super strength and is invulnerable. But he's also a sloppy, arrogant alcoholic who causes millions of dollars in property damage whenever he bothers to fight crime. When he saves the life of a PR agent named Ray (Jason Bateman, Arrested Development), Ray decides to improve Hancock's image--starting by having Hancock surrender himself to the authorities and go to prison for his lawless behaviour. The idea is that once he's in prison, the crime rate will go up and people will start realising Hancock might be of value after all. This is only the first act of Hancock though--from there, the film takes several surprising turns that shouldn't be revealed. Hancock isn't a great movie, but it is an extremely entertaining one. The script, which holds together far better than most superhero movies, has a propulsive plot, good dialogue, some compassion for its characters, and even an actual idea or two. The spectacular action at least gestures towards obeying the laws of physics, which actually makes the special effects more vivid. The three leads (Smith, Bateman, and Charlize Theron as Ray's wife, Mary) deftly balance the movie's mixture of comedy, action, and drama. All in all, a smart subversive twist on a genre that all too often takes itself all too seriously. --Bret Fetzer

I watched this film on Christmas day and found it hugely enjoyable. If you enjoy Will Smith playing his usual cuttingly witty but laid back character he tends to put into most of his movies, you will love this. Funnier than either MIB film, more jaw dropping special effects than anything I have seen in any film recently and more entertaining than any of his other recent offerings. Brilliant! Iron Man [Blu-ray] [2008]

Iron Man [Blu-ray] [2008]

Rated: Suitable for 12 years and over
Staring: Jeff Bridges, Terrence Howard, Shaun Toub, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert Downey Jr
Director: Jon Favreau

You know you're going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quite hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right. --Robert Horton

The superhero movies are really varying in quality. Some truly are excellent (Xmen 1 and 2, Transformers), others have barely anything to tell us (Fantastic 4, Daredevil, etc.).
In my view Iron man clearly falls in the first category. Firstly because Robert Downey Jr doesn't take the role too seriously and has the charisma. Of course the story is not perfect, but it hold together and we all wish there were more action scenes such as the fighter jet battle.
But at the end of the day, the image quality is stunning (a bit too noisy as mentioned in a earlier review) but really demonstrates what bluray is about. I've seen it on a Pioneer 50" plasma and it is nothing short of amazing. The disc interactivity is also nice with HD extras. Clearly it is must have for any Bluray owner, along with Pixar's Cars, Enchanted or Casino Royale in terms of image and sound quality. Buy it, if you are keen for superior image/sound quality, there's no way you'll regret it!

Firefly - The Complete Series [2003]

Firefly - The Complete Series [2003]

Rated: Suitable for 12 years and over
Staring: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin

Much praised and much missed after its premature cancellation, Firefly is the first SF TV series to be conceived by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy and cocreator of Angel. Set five centuries in the future, it is a show where the mysterious personal pasts of the crew of the tramp spaceship Serenity continually surface. In fact, it's a Western in space where the losers in a Civil War are heading out to a barren frontier. Mal Reynolds is a man embittered by the war, yet whose love of his comrades perpetually dents his cynicism--even in the 14 episodes that exist we see him warm to the bubbly young mechanic Kaylee, the preacher Book, the idealistic doctor Simon, even to the often demented River, Simon's sister, the psychic result of malign experiments.

Firefly is also about adult emotional relationships, for example Kaylee's crush on Simon, the happy marriage of Mal's second officer Zoe and the pilot Wash, the disastrous erotic stalemate between Mal and the courtesan Inara. Individual episodes deal with capers going vaguely wrong, or threats narrowly circumvented; character and plot arcs were starting to emerge when the show was cancelled. Fortunately, the spin-off movie Serenity ties up some of the ends; and in the meantime, what there is of Firefly is a show to marvel at, both for its tight writing and ensemble acting, and the idiocy of the executives who cancelled it.

On the DVD: Firefly on DVD is presented in anamorphic 1.78:1 with Dolby Surround Sound. It includes commentaries on six episodes by various writers, directors, designers and cast members as well as featurettes on the conception of the show and the design of the spaceship Serenity, four deleted scenes, a gag reel, and Joss Whedon singing the show's theme tune, more or less. One of the things that emerges from all of this is how committed to the project everyone involved with it was, and is--unusually, you end up caring as much for the cast and crew as for the characters.

Gotta go with everyone else here but there's a bonus: 'Serenity' the Film (Sequel not prequel). Some small consolation for the dropped series 2, but a worthy feature length finale. 4 discs of pure gripping SF space opera.

I won't spoil it, but more personality development and truely epic set pieces, almost worthy of Star Wars, but more believable! Quality production and effects. Better yet are the deeply worked characterisation and intelligent dialogue and plot: Did anyone else ever play Traveller (RPG)? It's got a very clear personality this series. Unique and a must have on the shelf.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2 Disc Special Edition) [2008]

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2 Disc Special Edition) [2008]

Rated: Parental Guidance
Staring: Ben Barnes, Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley, Anna Popplewell
Director: Andrew Adamson

More exciting than The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian continues the movie franchise based on C.S. Lewis' classic fantasy books. The movie picks up where the first left off... sort of. It's been a year since the Pevensie children--Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes), and Lucy (Georgie Henley)--returned to England from Narnia, and they've just about resigned themselves to living their ordinary lives. But just like that, they're once again transported to a fantastical land, but one with a long-abandoned castle. It turns out that they are in Narnia again--and they themselves lived in that castle, but hundreds of years ago in Narnia time. They've been summoned back to help Prince Caspian (Stardust's Ben Barnes, resembling a young, cultured Keanu Reeves), the rightful heir to the throne who's become the target of his power-hungry uncle, King Miraz (Sergio Castellitto). And he's not the only one threatened: Miraz's people, the Telmarines, have pushed all the Narnians--the talking animals, the centaurs and other beasts, the walking trees--to the brink of extinction. Despite some alpha-male bickering, Peter and Caspian agree to fight Miraz alongside the remaining Narnians, including the dwarf Trumpkin (Peter Dinklage) and the swashbuckling mouse Reepicheep (voiced by Eddie Izzard). (Also appearing is Warwick Davis, who was in Willow and the 1989 BBC version of Prince Caspian.) But of course they most of all miss the noble lion, Aslan, who would have never let this happen to Narnia if he hadn't disappeared.

Prince Caspian is epic, evoking memories of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. (Some of the battle elements may seem too familiar, but they were in Lewis's book.) And it's appropriate for kids (Reepicheep could have come out of a Shrek movie), though the tone is dark and there is a lot of death, albeit bloodless. After two successful films, Disney and Walden Media's franchise has proved successful enough that many of the characters are scheduled to return in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. --David Horiuchi, Amazon.com

Not a young kids film but adults to 9 year olds will love it and play it again and again. The best fantasy adventure film since the Lord of the Rings trilogy and at times it is better than LOTR.

I got this for my 3 boys (10-12) for Christmas. We sat down to watch it and from the open sequence it is all out action with numerous twists and turns, that even I as a lifelong fan of the books was surprised constantly through the 2 hours and 20 odd mins with.

Its not a faithful adaption of the book but close enough but the changes to the original tale really work tremendously well and make this yarn exciting and surprising from start to finish.

The effects are as good as the best CGI and the characters superb, with many of them acting their socks off. I love the telmerine Lord Protector and his General and Lords, they really get the machiavellian aspect of the Court and its intrigues just right.

Prince Caspian and the young Kings and Queens are tremendous as well with just the right amount of seriousness and laughs. The other characters such as the dwarfs, centaurs and Reepicheep the mouse, well words fail me fantastic again.

Oh and lets not forget the White Witch who makes a quite seductive and scary entry for a short period.

This is a dark story with some real tear jerking moments and many awesome battle scenes.

The Lion,Witch,Wardrobe was tame for me, this is so very much better and quite honestly I find it hard to believe it is Disney.

One of the Best films I've seen in years.

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (2 Disc Special Edition) [2008]

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (2 Disc Special Edition) [2008]

Rated: Suitable for 12 years and over
Staring: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, James Dodd, Seth MacFarlane
Director: Guillermo del Toro

The feverish Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is a very busy sequel that might have looked unhinged in the hands of a less visionary director than Guillermo del Toro. Ron Perlman returns as Hellboy, aka "Red," the Dark Horse Comics demon-hero with roots in the mythical world but personal ties in the human realm. Still working, as he was in Hellboy, for a secret department of the federal government that deals (as in "Men In Black") with forces of the fantastic, Red and his colleagues take on a royal elf (Luke Goss) determined to smash a longtime truce between mankind and the forces of magic. Meanwhile, Red's relationship with girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair), who can burst into flames at will, is going through a rocky stage observed by Red's fishy friend Abe (Doug Jones), himself struck by love in this film. Del Toro brilliantly integrates the ordinary and extraordinary, diving into an extended scene set in a troll market barely hidden behind the façade of typical city streets. He also unleashes a forest monster that devastates an urban neighborhood, but then--interestingly--brings a luminous beauty to the same area as the creature (an "elemental") succumbs to a terrible death. Del Toro's art direction proves masterful, too, in a climactic battle set in a clockworks-like stronghold tucked away in rugged Irish landscape. But it's really the juxtaposition of visual marvels with not-so-unusual relationship issues that gives Hellboy 2 a certain jaunty appeal hard to find in other superhero movies. --Tom Keogh

I have just finished watching this and I can truly say WOW! This is much better than the original even though the first Hellboy rocked. This film takes us deeper into the world of Hellboy with all its fantastic demons, trolls and hulking gold robots that are just awesome. There are great little funny quips here keeping this sequel edgy, funny and scary. The FX are some of the best I have seen in years, the CGI use is kept at a minimum for many of the hundreds of creatures within this film. I do hope they make a 3rd as this really did make me pine for more.
