The Last Samurai (Two Disc Edition) [2003] [DVD] [2004]

The Last Samurai (Two Disc Edition) [2003] [DVD] [2004]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Tom Cruise, Ken Watanabe, Billy Connolly, William Atherton, Chad Lindberg
Director: Edward Zwick

The Last Samurai gives epic sweep to an intimate story of cultures at a crossroads as Japan undergoes tumultuous transition to a more Westernised society in 1876-77. In America, tormented Civil War veteran Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is coerced by a mercenary officer (Tony Goldwyn) to train the Japanese Emperor's troops in the use of modern weaponry. Opposing this "progress" is a rebellion of samurai warriors, holding fast to their traditions of honour despite strategic disadvantage. As a captive of the samurai leader (Ken Watanabe), Algren learns, appreciates, and adopts the Samurai code, switching sides for a climactic battle that will put everyone's honour to the ultimate test.

All of which makes director Edward Zwick's noble epic eminently worthwhile, even if its Hollywood trappings (including an all-too-conventional ending) prevent it from being the masterpiece that Zwick and screenwriter John Logan clearly wanted it to be. Instead, The Last Samurai is an elegant mainstream adventure, impressive in all aspects of its production. It may not engage the emotions as effectively as Logan's script for Gladiator, but like Cruise's character, it finds its own quality of honour. --Jeff Shannon

This is an all time classic in my opinion. Very well made and engaging movie. An epic. Action scenes are detailed and awsome too although there is much more to it, like the relationships and the respect for a unique culture with own customs, values and discipline.

Kiss The Girls [1998] [DVD]

Kiss The Girls [1998] [DVD]

Rated: Suitable for 18 years and over
Staring: Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Cary Elwes, Alex McArthur, Tony Goldwyn
Director: Gary Fleder

Kiss the Girls is a thriller about a collaboration between two serial killers, and, coming after The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, it feels like a pale attempt to cash in on the success of those earlier, better films. That's a pity, because this film certainly has its strengths--particularly in the central performances of Morgan Freeman as a forensic detective and Ashley Judd as a would-be victim who escaped from one of the killers. Director Gary Fleder demonstrates visual flair and maintains an involving undercurrent of tension, but as this adaptation of James Patterson's novel approaches its climax, familiar elements combine to form a chronic case of thriller déjà vu. It's altogether competent filmmaking in the service of a moribund story of competing psychopaths, and by the time the serial killers reach the home stretch of their twisted contest, the movie's dangerously close to Freddy Kruger territory, with a finale that could've been borrowed from any one of dozens of similar thrillers. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

How can so many people rate this film so poorly, it is amazing. Morgan Freeman is an excellent actor and is brilliantly cast as the lead role, he does those roles so well(Seven). Just a short review this, just can't get my head round the low ratings(except the 1 star cos he say it does no justice to the book, which i understand as many a book adaption just doesn't do a book justice)

The Pelican Brief [DVD] [1994]

The Pelican Brief [DVD] [1994]

Rated: Suitable for 12 years and over
Staring: Julia Roberts, Denzel Washington, Sam Shepard, John Heard, Tony Goldwyn
Director: Alan J. Pakula

Another John Grisham legal thriller comes to the screen, pairing Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts in a film directed by Alan J Pakula, who is known for dark-hued suspense pictures such as Klute, The Parallax View, All the President's Men, and Presumed Innocent. The Pelican Brief isn't up to the level of those films, but it is a perfectly entertaining movie about a law student (Roberts) whose life is endangered when she discovers evidence of a conspiracy behind the killings of two Supreme Court justices. She enlists the help of an investigative reporter (Washington) and the two become fugitives. The charisma and chemistry of the leads goes a long way toward compensating for the story's shortcomings, as does a truly impressive supporting cast that includes Sam Shepard, John Heard, James B Sikking, Tony Goldwyn, Stanley Tucci, Hume Cronyn, John Lithgow, William Atherton and Robert Culp. --Jim Emerson

Ghost [DVD] [1990]

Ghost [DVD] [1990]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Goldwyn, Stanley Lawrence
Director: Jerry Zucker

The biggest hit of 1990, Ghost is part comedy, part romance, part supernatural thriller. Patrick Swayze, previously best known for Dirty Dancing, stars as Sam, the banker who is killed following a mugging. Caught in a limbo between here and the afterlife, he uses Whoopi Goldberg's fake psychic as an intermediary to warn wife Molly (Demi Moore) that his death was no accident but a murder and that she is in danger too.

Ghost's original popularity and notoriety originally arose not from its dealings with the supernatural but the scene involving Moore fondly astride her potter's wheel fashioning a somewhat phallic-shaped vase, with Swayze fondly astride her. So infamous did this scene become that it's now more likely to raise a chuckle than a sultry sigh. As for the rest of the movie, it still somehow manages to engage despite the awkward juxtaposition of lachrymose melodrama and zaniness. Demi Moore, whose massive Hollywood success was always a mystery to some, is a little flat as the tomboy-coiffed Molly, her tears occasionally seeming onion-induced. Swayze, however, delivers as Sam while Whoopi Goldberg turns in the best performance of her career, delivering the requisite zip and sass to what otherwise might have been a morose movie.

On the DVD: Though well restored, DVD enhancement has only served to emphasise the slightly quaint feel of the special effects here--Ghost was made just prior to the digital era. Otherwise, this is a good package and an essential purchase for fans. There's a 22-minute featurette, "Remembering the Magic", in which scriptwriter Bruce Joel Rubin explains that the film was inspired by the scene in Hamlet in which the Prince meets his Father, and how initially appalled he was that his masterpiece of the supernatural was to be directed by Jerry Zucker, previously responsible for Airplane!. They also reveal that Tina Turner was originally cast for the Goldberg role. Zucker and Rubin team up for a funny commentary track. --David Stubbs

I have to admit that I love a good horror film. But, sometimes this genre of film can be spoilt with predictable horror clichés, an ending destined for sequel hints and actors that don't give a character justice. I am pleasantly surprised to say this one shocked the living daylights out of me and I was hiding behind the pillow most of the way.

The storyline had good depth and loved the way that most scenes were connected and were later included into a major part of the story's outcome.

The acting is fantastic - not one character can be considered "cheesey" - they all deliver beyond what a script can layout.

I will admit a few of the scenes did make me very near sick to my stomach due to graphic nature of the filming and scenario played out so well with the actors involved. However, that makes the film's intensity and the beauty of the end result much more satisfying.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is Adam Gibson, a guy who loves flying and helping people enjoy the mountains. He loves his job - but one day, a guy comes to give him a test to see if he's still a good pilot, but what he doesn't realise is that his important vitals are being taken, for future use.

This is a great story about cloning, and the effects it would have on a society that's obsessed with being immortal, to think if you died tonight, within 2hrs a new version of you would have been made, and no one would be the wiser.

This is a good story, Arnie doing a great job as Adam, and we even get an appearance from Terry Crews (Everybody Hates Chris), which is pretty cool. Yes, the story does get let down at times by the effects, and more exciting scenes, but at the base of it all, there's a great story and it leaves you questioning what you just saw, and whether you could be interested in this technology.

This is a great transfer by Sony, clear as a bell, and really beautiful, the colours are vibrant, and look like a lot of work has gone into this to make it a lot more appealing to view. The sound is also wonderful, though the mix is a bit on the quiet side. I was really glad to see 4 other languages in this too, and all at 5.1 mixing - this is a first on blu-ray. The video is so fluid though, and is as fun as watching The Pursuit Of Happyness (Blu-ray), which has to be the best Sony released blu-ray so far.

The extras on the other hand are disappointing, still in SD, even 4:3! This isn't good, especially as a lot of people are probably buying this as they're big fans of the movie, so the extras really should have been in 1080i too. Otherwise there's a great selection of featurettes, trailers, even some BD-Live stuff to enjoy. This is one thing Sony do shine with, they like BD-Live and this is good, obviously nothing compared to the latest Bourne Blu-Ray transfers - but it's a start.

This is worth getting, especially as the transfer has been given the royal treatment. A must for those renting blu-rays.
