If you are like myself,I have owned all the Highlander's from VHS and a number of DVD releases. I was expecting this Blu Ray to be a bit of a dissapointment, I glad to report, that this is far superior to any other release out there. Yes, you get flaws with grain in the film, but to honest the picture quality is a big jump the ladder.

In my opinion,it's as good as it's going to get, unless it gets the Hollywood Money and treatment in the latest remastering, and lets be honest, thats never going to happen!
Take no notice of the moaners,it is and will always be a classic movie with visual flaws

The Longest Day [1962] [DVD]

The Longest Day [1962] [DVD]

Rated: Parental Guidance
Staring: John Wayne, Richard Burton, Henry Fonda, Robert Ryan, Sean Connery
Director: Ken Annakin, Andrew Marton, Bernhard Wicki

After seeing Saving Private Ryan, this epic tale about the Normandy invasion will look sanitised. But in its re-creation of events leading to the epochal battle, The Longest Day is captivating and grand, and the parade of famous actors who cross the screen naturally give the already charged action even more of a boost. Three directors worked on it: Ken Annakin (Battle of the Bulge), Andrew Marton (Crack in the World) and Bernhard Wicki (this film being his only credit). --Tom Keogh

Hunt For Red October Special Edition [DVD] [1990]

Hunt For Red October Special Edition [DVD] [1990]

Rated: Parental Guidance
Staring: Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, James Earl Jones
Director: John McTiernan

Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting post-movie discussion. That aside, The Hunt for Red October stands alone as a uniquely exciting adventure with a fantastic co-star: Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain attempting to defect to the West on his ship. Ryan must figure out his true motives for approaching the US. McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) made an exceptionally handsome movie here with action sequences that really do take one's breath away. --Tom Keogh

I am tired and exhausted of hearing people complaining about Sean Connery's "worst Russian accent ever" when it is quite clear that the Russians have the worst Sean Connery accent ever. Just try asking any rooskie to say "Bond, James Bond" or "Moneypenny" and you can hear immediately where the problem truly lies.

The Rock [DVD] [1996]

The Rock [DVD] [1996]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Sean Connery, Brendan Kelly, Vanessa Marcil, John C. McGinley, Nicolas Cage
Director: Michael Bay

Between his high-octane debut, Bad Boys, and 1998's wannabe blockbuster Armageddon, hotshot director Michael Bay forged his dubious reputation with this crowd-pleasing action extravaganza. In Rock, a psychotically disgruntled war hero (Ed Harris) seizes the island prison of Alcatraz and threatens to wage chemical warfare against nearby San Francisco unless the government publicly recognises the men who were killed under Harris's top-secret command. Nicolas Cage plays the biochemist who teams up with the only man ever to have escaped from Alcatraz (Sean Connery) in an attempt to foil Harris's terrorist scheme. As one might expect, what follows is an action-packed barrage of bullets, bodies, and climactic confrontations, replete with enough plot contrivances to give even the most jaded action fan cause for alarm. It's a load of hooey, but the cast is obviously having a grand old time, and there's enough wit to make the recycled action sequences tolerable. --Jeff Shannon

This is a great film for that Friday night with a beer, pizza and a few friends. Embittered Army General Ed Harris has pinched a few nasty chemical warheads and has holed up on Alcatraz with them, threatening to launch them on San Francisco if the American Government does not meet his demands. Nicholas Cage is the amiable FBI chemicals expert tasked with defusing them. Sean Connery is the FBI's dirty secret, an Englishman held secretly in jail, who happens to be the only man to have escaped from Alcatraz, and is Cage's only hope of getting in.

Directed with vigour by Michael Bay, and featuring a talented cast who get right into the spirit of things, this is an enjoyable romp. With plenty of big stunts, gun fights, explosions, thrills and spills along the way it's big and loud and a lot of fun.

Presented in widescreen with a decent 5.1 surround sound, the only extra is a disposable commentary. However, this is a decent budget release of a great non-stop action thriller. Highly recommended.

James Bond Blu-Ray Collection

James Bond Blu-Ray Collection

Rated: Suitable for 12 years and over
Staring: Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, Halle Berry, Judi Dench, Michael Madsen
Director: Terence Young, John Glen, Lee Tamahori, Guy Hamilton

They’ve taken their time getting here, but the 007 back catalogue finally makes its bow in high definition, with a broad choice of films to get things started. And where better to start than with the film that started the James Bond saga off in the first place?

Dr. No, starring Sean Connery, is the first of the official Bonds, and regarded by many as one of the best. It’s inevitably quite raw by recent standards (and arguably better for it), but the balance of humour and action is superbly handled, and it continues to endure far beyond nostalgia value. From Russia With Love, also starring Connery, is even better (and this is the 007 film that plenty cite as their outright favourite), pitting Bond up against SPECTRE in an ambitious and outstanding adventure. The final Connery title in the set is Thunderball, which finds SPECTRE again up to no good, holding a city to ransom under threat of an atomic weapon. It, too, is premium Bond, and great to see in high definition.

Next up in the set is a pair of Roger Moore outings, starting with his debut in the role, Live and Let Die. The memorable title song aside, this is an often-underrated adventure, replete with dramatic boat chase, and drug smugglers needing to be taken down. Then there’s For Your Eyes Only, which pits Bond against Julian Glover’s Kristatos in the hunt for the ATAC weapons system.

The final film in the set is Pierce Brosnan’s swansong as 007, Die Another Day, which also introduces Halle Berry as Jinx, a massive ice castle and the oft-mocked invisible car. But it’s a harder adventure than you’d expect, and again, better than it’s given credit for.

It’s been some wait for James Bond fans eager to get their hands on high definition versions of their favourites. And while there are still plenty of Bond movies to make the jump to 1080p, this collection is a great way to get the ball rolling. Let’s hope James Bond will return to hi-def. And soon. --Jon Foster

Highlander [DVD] [1986]

Highlander [DVD] [1986]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Sean Connery, Christopher Lambert, Roxanne Hart, Clancy Brown, Billy Hartman
Director: Russell Mulcahy

This 1986 fantasy/action thriller has since spawned two sequels, a TV series, numerous comic-book spin-offs, and a loyal (if somewhat oddly obsessive) following of fans. Directed by music-video veteran Russell Mulcahy (which explains the dizzying camera work and soundtrack contributions from Queen), the original theatrical release made a hash of an intriguing story about an "Immortal" from 16th-century Scotland (Christopher Lambert) who time-leaps to modern-day America with his arch-enemy (Clancy Brown) in hot pursuit. It becomes a battle to the death (yes, Immortals can die) and Lambert seeks survival training from an Immortal mentor played by Sean Connery. Highlander is dazzling, energetic and altogether confusing. --Jeff Shannon

Russell Mulcahy's hugely popular fantasy epic is back in a digitally remastered offering that proves, beyond question, that you can't keep a cult legend down!

Often imitated, and regularly disgraced by an ever growing line of lesser sequels, "Highlander", for the few of you out there who are not in the know, follows a mysterious band of swordsmen, immortal save for a decapitation, who must battle down the ages from Sixteenth Century Scotland to New York in the (then) present day (1985) until only one remains, the victor receiving a power that transcends man's wildest dreams.

Based on an original screenplay by fireman cum film student Gregory Widen, the movie was quite limply released to cinemas in the latter half of 1986, going largely unnoticed until it's spectacular resurrection in the home video market some months later, where it garnered a heady (no pun intended!) combination of enthusiastic public reaction and soaring sell-thru figures!

Years pass, beauty fades, but pure genius endures, and this visceral treat is no exception! From the opening power chord of the unforgettable Queen soundtrack through to the very last frame, the movie hits you with a power that is as confident and exciting today as it ever was. Granted, this isn't ideal entertainment for the Merchant-Ivory demographic, but if it's a straight-to-the-heart shot of pure MTV-inspired adrenaline you're after, then you could do one heck of a lot worse! There's even an ultimately doomed love story in the mix for the lovely ladies and their handkerchiefs!

A bone of contention that will always damage the credibility of any art created in the 1980's is that of it's being a product of the decade that taste forgot, and "Highlander" does, I'm afraid, fall victim to an excessive inclusion of peroxide hairstyles and polished leather, but, in it's defence, the plot's more contemporary scenes are referred to as taking place in that very time, so overlook the flaw, and keep telling yourself: "It's historical!"

Loud, colourful, flashy and fun..."Highlander" is, to quote the late, great Freddie Mercury: "A Kind Of Magic!"

Untouchables, The - Special Edition [DVD] [1987]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Robert De Niro, Charles Martin Smith, Andy Garcia
Director: Brian De Palma

The DVD extras follow the adage that if one has lemons, make lemonade. This "special" edition has no commentary track, and no new input from stars Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, and Andy Garcia or writer David Mamet. Yet DVD director Laurent Bouzereau has an ace up his sleeve that makes the four new featurettes (about 50 minutes of content) worth listening to: candid talk. The usual, stiff promotional take is jettisoned as producer Art Linson and director Brian De Palma honestly talk about the film's origins, the tricks of shooting, and the casting of Robert De Niro. These refreshing comments (plus insight from the cinematographer Stephen H. Burum and actor Charles Martin Smith), and better-than-average vintage interviews makes for valuable watching--even if the footage is intercut too often with film clips. To top it all off, there's a new Dolby Digital 5.1 EX soundtrack. --Doug Thomas
