film, 2009-09-23 This is a brilliant DVD which has the film updated and the deletion of the lines that used to show on the original copies and film that was shot in the 3 camera use of CINERAMA...the background of the film is also great but if you have Blue ray that version is better still as it shows the films in its original semi circular screen showing.....

Sidney Lumet
Sidney Lumet's directorial debut Twelve Angry Men remains a tense, atmospheric (though slightly manipulative and stagey) courtroom thriller, in which the viewer never sees a trial and the only action is verbal. As he does in his later corruption commentaries such as Serpico or Q & A, Lumet focuses on the lonely one-man battles of a protagonist whose ethics alienate him from the rest of jaded society. As the film opens, the seemingly open-and-shut trial of a young Puerto Rican accused of murdering his father with a knife has just concluded and the 12-man jury retires to their microscopic, sweltering quarters to decide the verdict. When the votes are counted, 11 men rule guilty, while one--played by Henry Fonda, again typecast as another liberal, truth-seeking hero--doubts the obvious. Stressing the idea of "reasonable doubt", Fonda slowly chips away at the jury, who represent a microcosm of white, male society--exposing the prejudices and preconceptions that directly influence the other jurors' snap judgments. The tight script by Reginald Rose (based on his own teleplay) presents each juror vividly using detailed soliloquies, all which are expertly performed by the film's flawless cast. Still, it's Lumet's claustrophobic direction--all sweaty close-ups and cramped compositions within a one-room setting--that really transforms this contrived story into an explosive and compelling nail-biter. --Dave McCoy, Amazon.com
Not a single wasted moment, 2010-05-31 Twelve Angry Men creates and holds its tension because there is not a single wasted moment, camera shot, facial expression, gesture or spoken line. A noted film critic said the "Most films are twenty mintes too long." and we can see the truth of this in so many films, but watch Twelve Angry Men. Is there a single minute you could lose without damaging the whole?

After seeing Saving Private Ryan, this epic tale about the Normandy invasion will look sanitised. But in its re-creation of events leading to the epochal battle, The Longest Day is captivating and grand, and the parade of famous actors who cross the screen naturally give the already charged action even more of a boost. Three directors worked on it: Ken Annakin (Battle of the Bulge), Andrew Marton (Crack in the World) and Bernhard Wicki (this film being his only credit). --Tom Keogh
One of the best, 2010-03-16 A true classic. Shows a bit of everything from all sides. Terrific for its year.

Sergio Leone had to be persuaded to return to the Western for Once Upon a Time in the West after the success of his "Dollars" trilogy. The result is a masterpiece that expands the vision of the earlier movies in every way. It could as easily have been called The Good, the Bad, the Ugly and the Blonde as Charles Bronson steps into the No-Name role as the harmonica-playing vengeance seeker, Henry Fonda trashes his Wyatt Earp image as a dead-faced, blue-eyed killer who has sold out to the rapacious railroad; Jason Robards provides humanitarian footnotes as a life-loving but doomed bandit and the astonishingly beautiful Claudia Cardinale shows that all these grown-up little boys are less fit to make a country than one determined widow-mother-whore-angel-everywoman. The opening sequence--Woody Strode, Al Mulock and Jack Elam waiting for a train and bothered by a fly and dripping water--is masterful bravura, homing in on tiny details for a fascinating but eventless length of time before Bronson arrives for the lightning-fast shoot-out. With striking widescreen compositions and epic running time, this picture truly wins points for length and width. On the DVD: Once Upon a Time in the West on disc is the transfer fans have been waiting for: the longest available version of the film in shimmering widescreen (enhanced for 16:9 TVs) which lends full impact to Leone's long shots of Monument Valley scenery or bustling crowds of activity, but also highlights his ultra-close images as Bronson's beady eyes or Cardinale's luscious pout fill the entire screen. A commentary track is mostly by expert Sir Christopher Frayling, with input from other academics, participants and enthusiasts--it's good on the detail, and Alex Cox winningly points out that one scene bizarrely can't be reconciled with what happens before or after it. Disc 2 has four featurettes which, taken together, add up to a feature-length documentary on the film, and though overlapping the commentary slightly offer a wealth of further good stuff, plus the elegant Cardinale's undiminished smile. Also included is the trailer, notes on the cast, menu screens with generous selections from Ennio Morricone's score, stills gallery, comparison shots from the film and contemporary snapshots of the locations. --Kim Newman
A masterpiece, but 6 minutes shorter than on VHS, 2010-02-22 This film is probably my favourite of all time, which is a bit odd as I do not generally like westerns that much. But this stands apart from all other westerns, and really all other films. You could compare this to the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, but I see that as a warm-up for this one. This was Sergio Leone's chance to work with a bigger budget, and cast stars who were already established. He had wanted to work with Fonda for some time, and extracts one of the best performances of his career, and one that totally contrasts with the roles that Fonda was known for. Claudia Cardinale looks amazing, and is cast perfectly. Charles Bronson gives the finest performance of his career, by a considerable margin. Leone had used Ennio Moricone's music to great effect in previous films, but here it really comes into its own, with scenes carefully choreographed to the music in a way that had never been done before, nor equalled since. It is a film I have watched many times, but I still remember that first time I saw it, and being spellbound by the fact that I did not know what was coming next. There is a deeper plot than is usually found in Westerns, and the central point of the whole film is held back until the end. I know the dubbing is dodgy, but no more so than in other films of the time, and we have to remember that the entire film was shot silently, with all the dialogue being added on afterwards.
This is the first time I have owned it on DVD, having previously had a VHS copy. The extra features here are worth having, but I do have a slight gripe in the version of the film contained here has a running time of 159 minutes, whereas my older VHS version had a slightly longer running time of 165 minutes. I believe the longer version was also released on DVD in some regions, so I am not sure why we have been slightly short-changed here. However, neither version contain the famously-missing scene where Charles Bronson is beaten up by the town Sherif's men shortly after arrival, the only clue to which is the unexplained appearance of a scar on his face in what would have been the next scene. So until they recover that footage, and reinsert or add it as an additional feature, this remains an essential purchase. Maybe the Blu-ray version will provide the opportunity to see the film in its entirety, which is allegedly 171 minutes. Until such a time, buy this.

A great film with great actors action and story, 2008-06-09 The Battle of Midway is a great film with many great actors giving great performances in a story of the turning point in the Pacific War. OK the filmakers did save money by reusing FX from Tora Tora Tora and 30 Seconds over Tokyo but that does not take away from one of the best stories of world War 2.
